Spring 2018

Welcome to our spring 2018 events programme which spans a wide range

of styles and cultures across the performing, creative and visual arts. There

is an exciting host of distinguished visiting performers, many of whom

will be mentoring our students in masterclasses, one-to-one coaching

and helping to prepare them for a career in the profession. Of course, our

student musicians feature prominently throughout the season from solo

performances, small ensembles and in larger groups including our jazz,

strings and symphony orchestras. One particular highlight will, we are sure,

be the performance of Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms.

Our aim here at Wells is always to focus on communication through

creativity and quality engagement. We appreciate your support in attending

our events - thank you! We need feedback, so please do let us know about

your experience. We are a school, and we want to share what we have. We

are therefore committed to making our concerts as accessible as possible to

young people, and we offer events which are often free entry for them.

London or BustA series of six paintings inspired

by William Hogarth’s The Harlot’s

Progress follows the trajectory of

Chloe, a young woman from the

country, as she tries to make her

way in the world. The middle class

idyll is not what it seems!

Heather Jane Wallace lives in

Wells where she runs the Heritage

Courtyard Studio. These works are

a portrait of society itself rather

than particular individuals.

supergroup alights in Wells with

Steinway piano, from which she conjures

an exotic, glittering set of miniature musical

The Goldberg Variationswith Céline Frisch

French harpsichordist Céline Frisch’s

acclaimed recording of J S Bach’s The

Goldberg Variations has received awards

across the world. We are thrilled that she

will be playing this extraordinary,

life-affirming masterpiece live in Wells in her UK debut. Céline will

be donating her fee for this concert to Wells Cathedral School’s Music

Bursary Fund as a gesture of thanks for the support which enables her

daughter to study at the school.

Masterpieces for String Quartet 3 of 4with the Alberni Quartet

Cedars Hall’s quartet in residence

continues its series pairing two

great works from the string quartet

repertoire. Tonight, Beethoven’s

extraordinary F minor quartet

op.95 (Serioso) stands sentinel at

the gateway into the rarefied world

of his late quartets. The String

Quartet by Elgar, written exactly

a century ago during the tragic

final months of the First World

War somehow manages, according

to Elgar’s wife, to overflow with

“captured sunshine”.

Beethoven’s First Symphonywith St Andrews Chamber Orchestra

Beethoven was still in his 20s, and

very much the new boy in town,

when he threw down the gauntlet

to Mozart and Haydn with a

symphony of his own. It’s a young

man’s work and is played here

by a group of similarly ambitious

young Wells musicians, who have

an impression to make on the

musical world and have formed

their own orchestra to do so. The

programme also includes the

Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky

Korsakov, Elgar's Sospiri and

Ravel's delicate Pavane For a

Dead Infanta.

Brahms RequiemWells Cathedral School's choral

and orchestral forces join to

perform one of the great works

of musical consolation. Brahms

claimed he could have named this

a “human requiem” with its focus

on comforting the living while

acknowledging the dead. This is a

perfect coming-together moment,

for the whole diverse Wells

community as we head into Easter.

Swing Machine Jazz Orchestra with PeeWee Ellis

“PeeWee makes funk sound jazzy

and jazz sound funky. Somehow he

synthesises the two into one great

music.” – Peter Madsen

We welcome the great PeeWee Ellis

to Cedars Hall with our resident

Swing Machine Jazz Orchestra. It’s

not often that we can claim to be

hosting a genuine musical legend,

but PeeWee is the real thing. Now

77, the American saxophonist and

composer learnt his craft with

Sonny Rollins, played in James

Brown’s band in the ‘60s co-writing

hits like Cold Sweat and Say it Loud

– I’m Black and I’m Proud, and later

worked closely with Van Morrison.

Glastonbury Male Voice ChoirThe Glastonbury Male Voice Choir

has been singing in Somerset

for nearly a century and a huge

influx of new members in the

last few years has added a wealth

of fresh talent and enthusiasm.

The choir, under its musical

director, Tracey Hansford, delivers

wonderful harmonies and thrilling

interpretations in a wide range of

musical genres.

Presented by the Rotary Club of

Glastonbury and Street, this is the

Regular lunchtime concertsLunchtime concerts take place in Wells Cathedral School’s Quilter Hall

at 1.05pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on occasional Fridays during

term-time, starting on 16th January 2018. These concerts are an important

opportunity for our specialist musicians to perform their solo repertoire.

Doors open 15 minutes before the start of the concert, admission is free

of charge, and everyone is welcome. All of our lunchtime concerts have a

retiring collection in aid of Friends of Music at Wells Cathedral School.

How to get to Cedars HallCedars Hall is situated in the heart of Wells Cathedral School and can be

accessed on foot either from The Liberty or from the main gate on

College Road (postcode BA5 2ST). Please note there is no public access

via the service gate at the Bristol Hill junction of New Street and Mountery

Road (A39).

Parking for Cedars HallWe are able to allocate disabled-only parking in the car park adjacent to

Cedars House on The Liberty. Please contact the box office (01749 834483) to

reserve a disabled parking space. Please refrain from parking here unless you

have booked a disabled space.

Further evening-only parking is available in Wells Cathedral School’s

Mundy’s Meadow car park, which is free for this season; from here it is a

short traffic-free walk via Lovers Walk to The Liberty.

Please see the map opposite for details of how to find Cedars Hall, the

disabled car park and Mundy’s Meadow car park.

Alternative parking in WellsAdditional parking spaces are available in the city’s public car parks. Charges

start from £1.50 for two hours parking during the day and are often free after

6.00pm. All these car parks are within a 15-minute walk from Cedars Hall:

Friends of Music - support and benefitsThe independent charity Friends of Music at Wells Cathedral School

supports the talented and enthusiastic young musicians at the school by

raising funds to purchase instruments, subsidise concert tours and give

CAVATINA ConcertsFree tickets for 25s and under at some of our concerts are made possible

with the support of the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust. Please see the

concert listings for eligible concerts. Young people with these tickets will

be asked to complete a form on arrival at the concert.

Which seat should I book at Cedars Hall?

Raked / tiered seating within the stallsThis is like the seating that you would find in a cinema, with each row slightly higher

than the row in front of it. All of these seats offer a great view of the stage and are

a good distance away from the stage to maximise enjoyment, making them our

premium seating option.

Flat seating within the stallsFor some performances, we add rows of flat seats in front of the raked seats. These

seats are quite close to the action, which some people find a bit much, flat seating

often costs less than the raked seating.

Gallery seatingOur gallery seats are accessed through a flight of stairs. Seats are located around the

perimeter of the hall, so some seats offer views of the side and rear of the stage. Ticket

prices vary in cost, depending on the view of the stage.
