Earning your degree from Franklin University is a significant achievement. While your diploma is symbolic of your new-found knowledge and skills, it is also a testament to the abilities you’ve always had within you – hard work, dedication and perseverance.
In accordance with Ohio’s social distancing protocols, an in-person gathering for Franklin University’s Spring 2020 Commencement wasn’t possible, but unique times require unique solutions. To provide the opportunity to celebrate this important milestone, we have transitioned the Spring 2020 Commencement to a virtual celebration. While we have re-created some aspects of our traditional ceremony, the focus of our pre-recorded ceremony is on you and your accomplishments.
We are proud of all you have achieved and are honored to have shared in your journey.
Established in 1902, Franklin University is central Ohio’s leading educator of working professionals and one of the largest private universities in the state. Amantha Yoshida is an Ohio native and earned her bachelor’s degree in criminology at The Ohio State University. After graduation, she took on full-time leadership roles at UPS where she spent her time in roles in operations, investigations and labor relations.
Embarking on a new journey in 2018, Amantha is currently the labor relations manager for American Electric Power (AEP), an energy/utilities company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. After joining AEP, Amantha realized her passion for business psychology and decided to pursue her master’s degree at Franklin University.
Amantha credits much of her professional and educational success to her friends, family and professional mentors. She is grateful for the guidance, patience and wisdom that each have provided her throughout this journey.

Each trimester, two faculty members are honored with the Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award. Graduating students are asked to identify one undergraduate and one graduate faculty member who had the most significant influence on them throughout their educational experience at Franklin University. The award recognizes those who have challenged students intellectually and guided them in finding the significance of the course content as it relates to them both personally and professionally.
While more than 100 graduate and undergraduate faculty members are nominated each trimester – clearly showing the magnitude of interaction between students and faculty at Franklin University – the faculty members receiving the most nominations are awarded this honor.
These awards are funded through an endowment established by State Auto Insurance Companies in recognition of Robert L. Bailey, who served State Auto for 28 years in various positions, including president, CEO and chairman, until his retirement in 2000. Bailey is also a past Chair and a Trustee Emeritus of Franklin University’s Board of Trustees.
Congratulations to this trimester’s recipients: Jerome C. Council, undergraduate faculty and Michael Henson, graduate faculty.
Jerome C. Council has been an adjunct faculty member at Franklin University since 2005. A three-time winner of Franklin University’s Teaching Excellence Award, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate-level business courses.
A Detroit native, Jerome served in the U.S. Navy as assistant top secret control officer in the COMFAIRWESTPAC communications group stationed in Japan. During his more than five-year stint in the country, Jerome was stationed at two different bases and built his fluency in Japanese.
After studying graphic design at Columbus College of Art and Design and marketing at The Ohio State University, Jerome earned his bachelor’s degree, as well as his MBA from Franklin University.
Prior to his retirement after nearly three decades at Honda, Jerome held several leadership roles in profit and loss, as well as new model cost planning.
Michael Henson has been an adjunct professor at Franklin University since 2016. He has taught courses in risk management, corporate finance and business communications. During his time at Franklin, he’s also re-written two risk management courses. Mike’s style is that of a coach, facilitator, encourager and mentor, whether he is facilitating learning with students or at work with the associates he mentors.
Mike earned his bachelor’s degree, as well as his MBA from Franklin University. In addition to many insurance and leadership designations, he holds the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Mike has been with Nationwide Insurance for more than 40 years, where he is currently a director in Property and Casualty (P&C) Finance. In addition to previously serving on the board of directors for multiple companies, he volunteers at Grant Hospital, Life Care Alliance, and the United Way of Central Ohio.
Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the 13th and 14th centuries. The hoods are thought to be carried over from the times when the monks who operated universities wore them to protect their shaved heads in winter. The robe also may have been necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars.
Use of the academic robe came to the United States in the 18th century. In 1895, a conference of various university officials adopted a universal code of design and color, which has undergone numerous revisions over the years.
Robe styles vary for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The width of sleeve borders and length of the hood increases with each advanced degree. The color of the velvet border on the hood indicates the type of advanced degree achieved.
Gold signifies summa cum laude, 3.90 or higher cumulative GPA.
White signifies magna cum laude, 3.70-3.89 cumulative GPA.
Red signifies cum laude, 3.50-3.69 cumulative GPA.
To qualify for these honors, students must complete a minimum of 30 cumulative semester hours in baccalaureate coursework or 20 semester hours in associate coursework at Franklin University.
The Leader Scholar Society of Franklin University is comprised of students from both undergraduate and graduate programs, who have achieved the highest levels of academic achievement as well as exhibited leadership skills in the classroom, in their careers, or within the community. Members of the Society are invited to be guests at Franklin’s annual Raymond E. Mason Jr. Leadership Symposium. Since 2005, this group showcases Franklin’s best and brightest students. We are proud of their achievements not only as students, but within society today and in the future.
