Dear Member:

Safe, Strong & Secure

Despite the many challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought, Catholic Life Insurance enjoyed another successful year. As an essential business, we remained open and accessible so that we could serve our members. We quickly adapted our operations to comply with local, state, and federal mandates. We deployed 50% of our staff to “work from home” status and distanced those who remained in the office. While many have returned to work in the Home Office, I’m proud to say that our staff never lost a beat. We canceled all in-person meetings. This included Branch meetings, which are the lifeblood of our fraternal operations. We are looking forward to possibly restarting Branch meetings early this summer. In addition, for the first time in our history, we held a virtual convention. The pandemic made it challenging for our Agents to meet with clients. But with a little ingenuity, they soon found ways to connect. Agents met with clients via the phone, through videoconferencing, and heavily masked in parking lots. Please turn to page 14 to see who led the organization in helping families’ plan for their futures.Overall, we are proud of our 2020 financial results. Please see our Annual Statement of Condition on pages 10 & 11 for more information.

Catholic Schools Sweepstakes

Like most non-profits, the pandemic hit Catholic schools hard. Enrollment fell and fundraising opportunities, such as galas, were canceled. For 66 Texas schools, the Catholic Schools Sweepstakes program was a lifesaver. Despite many students attending class remotely, the Catholic Schools Sweepstakes raised $1.128 million. Best of all, 100% of the funds go directly to the schools. Schools use the monies they raise to provide tuition assistance, to augment teacher salaries, to purchase computer equipment, and much, much more. We invite you to turn to page four for more details. As an organization, we support many ministries throughout the areas where we operate. We are always proud of what we do on our member’s behalf. The Catholic Schools Sweepstakes is a program where we make a significant difference.

In closing, we thank you for allowing us to serve you and your family.

Sincerely,

J. Michael BelzPresident/CEO

SPRING 2021

What started 14 years ago to help needy Catholic schools has blossomed into a program that has put nearly $12 million in the schools' treasuries.

"Every week, I would get a letter or a call from another Catholic school in need," said President J. Michael Belz. "We wanted to help them all, but their needs were great, and our funds were limited. We put our heads together, and the solution we came up with was the Catholic Schools Sweepstakes."

Since its beginning 14 years ago, schools from Texas dioceses have taken part in the program. In total, the program has raised more than 11 million dollars.

"Participating schools are only limited by the amount of money they can raise, instead of what we can give them," he said. "The top school this year raised more than $72,000, with the next school in line raising more than $55,000."

Catholic Life provides the prizes, the tickets, and marketing materials while students at participating schools sell tickets at $5 each. The ticket sales begin in the fall and close during Catholic Schools week held the last week of January. In 2021, 66 Catholic Schools from 12 Texas dioceses more than 225,150 tickets to raise more than $1.128 million.

"The schools get 100% of the funds, and they get the money as the tickets are sold," said President Belz. "This lets the school put the money to work right away. Catholic Life earns no money from this program. We do it to support Catholic education."

We drew 67 winners on February 12, 2021, with Dakotah Vidal from The Atonement Academy in San Antonio, as the grand prize winner. He had the choice of a 2021 Ford F150, a 2021 Ford Focus, or a $20,000 Prepaid VISA Credit Card as a prize, but he selected the $20,000 Prepaid VISA Credit Card

Additionally, each of the 66 participating schools had a $1,000 Prepaid VISA Gift Card winner drawn from the tickets they sold.

The schools are very grateful for the program," said program administrator Barbara Cheaney. "They use the funds for a variety of programs, but mostly to enhance operations and to provide tuition assistance."

Our Agents play a vital role in the Catholic School Sweepstakes. They pick up tickets from the schools, provide additional prizes, and educate the schools about Catholic Life Insurance.

"We are extremely pleased with the results of the Sweepstakes. Our goals are to grow the number of schools that participate and the amount of money being raised," added Belz. "It is the right thing for Catholic Life to be doing, particularly in today's economy.

Longtime Agent Retires

After nearly 50 years on the job, former General Agent Larry Pelzel has hung up his hat for good. The San Angelo resident retired as an Agent on March 1, 2021.

Pelzel began his career with Catholic Life in 1973, when he was 23-years old. He quickly rose to the position of Regional Manager and then General Agent. Through the years, he’s driven hundreds of thousands of miles to help families from the San Angelo area all the way to the Texas Panhandle.

“Thanks to Larry, there are many families whose futures will be secure and whose retirement years will be golden,” said Assistant Vice President/Director of Agencies Janet Friesenhahn. “He did an awesome job taking care of Catholic Life members.”

Larry stepped down as a manager in 2017, but remained active as an Agent. “Larry has always been a man of honesty and integrity,” said President Belz. “He's always been someone you could count on.” We wish him the best of luck as he begins another chapter in his life.

Scholarships for Seminarians

Now Available

Do you know someone who is studying to become a Catholic

Priest? If so, Catholic Life is now offering two scholarships to Roman Catholic seminarians to reduce the financial burden underwritten by the Diocese.

The application deadline for the Msgr. Albert G. Henkes and the Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben Seminarian Scholarships is June 15, 2021.

The Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben Scholarship honors the late Rev. Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben, who served as Catholic Life’s Spiritual Advisor for eight years. Seminarians applying for this scholarship must attend Assumption Seminary in San Antonio. Approximately 22 dioceses throughout the United States send seminarians to study at Assumption Seminary where Msgr. Stuebben once served as Rector. Fifty-five seminarians have earned scholarships through this fund.

The Msgr. Albert G. Henkes Scholarship honors the late Msgr. Henkes, who served as Catholic Life’s Spiritual Advisor for 27 years. The scholarship is open to any resident of Texas, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Mississippi who has enrolled in a Roman Catholic Seminary anywhere throughout the world. Scholarships through this fund have been awarded to 86 seminarians to date.

You can download an application at www.cliu.com or contact the Communications Department at (210) 828-9921. Applications are also available through Diocesan Vocation Directors.

Dear Member:

SAFE, STRONG, SECURE

Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought, Catholic Life

Insurance finished 2020 in a solid financial position. As we celebrate our 120th year

of service, the following results demonstrate our financial strength and stability:

■ Assets increasing to $1,234,007,036

■ Revenue equaling $115,624,433

■ Surplus climbing to $105,830,817

■ The annuity portfolio rising to $874,399,829

■ Net income reaching $2,159,926

■ Our solvency ratio equaling 109.38

Like many Texas-based operations, the collapse of the oil and gas industry

negatively affected us. However, we rebounded from oil and gas bond impairments

that occurred early in the year, enabling us to finish the year solidly in the black.

Moreover, Catholic Life has no debt and has ample liquidity. As a result, A.M. Best

Company, a respected insurance industry analyst, once again awarded us an A-/

Excellent rating in 2020.

Putting Catholic Values into Action

This financial strength fuels all of our operations. It enables us to make a

difference in the local communities where our members live and work. It allows us

to support faith-based ministries. And ultimately, it helps us put our Catholic values

into action.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Officers, and Staff, we thank you for the

opportunity to serve you and your family. We hope that you will continue to rely

upon Catholic Life’s products to meet your financial goals.

Sincerely,

Colleen Z. Berger, CPA, CGMA Chip A. Nance, CFA, MBA Senior Vice President/ Vice President/Treasurer Chief Financial Officer

The Church welcomes us again to a season of Lent, where we remember that we are

dust and will return to dust. It is a time to ready ourselves for death and judgment

before God, which all must face. The Apostles’ Creed states with certainty that Christ

“will come again to judge the living and the dead.”

The Ascended Christ, victorious over sin and death, is seated at God’s right hand

in His glorified body, awaiting the Father’s time to return to earth as Judge. The

Psalmist says that God has decreed: “’I will choose the time;/ I will judge fairly.’”

(Psalm 75:3) Divine appraisal of people’s lives and the consequences of their choices

are everywhere spoken of in Scripture, beginning with the banishment of Adam and

Eve from Eden because of their sin, and continuing until the final judgment and

recompense described in the book of Revelation.

Judgment is not just universal (for the world) but individual (for each person).

Qoheleth in the book of Ecclesiastes declares there is “a time to die” (Ecclesiastes 3:2),

when “God will bring to judgment every work, with all its hidden qualities, whether

good or bad.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7, 13) Christ Himself proclaims a final judgment, saying

that persons will be judged by how they treat others, concluding with the somber

statement that unloving persons “’will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous

to eternal life.’” (Matthew 25:46) Our choices in time will have outcomes in eternity.

The reality of Christ’s return to “judge the living and the dead” can engender dread

or hope. Christ warned the people of Galilee: “’Repent, and believe the gospel.’”

(Mark 1:15) Those who refuse to confess their sin and believe the gospel of God’s

love will receive eternal punishment – a dreadful prospect regarding Christ as Judge.

But God is patient, “not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to

repentance.” (2 Peter 3:8) Those who repent of their sin will find God “faithful and just

to forgive” those sins. (1 John 1:8) Eternal life in a fully restored creation, graced by

God’s own presence, awaits the truly repentant. This is the sure hope guaranteed by

Christ’s own ascended life in heaven.

As the Creed declares, Christ will indeed return as Judge. Sooner or later the good

and evil in everyone’s life (including ours) will be revealed. The inevitability of a final

judgment (and its particular outcome based on one’s faith and obedience) calls us

to persist in continuing conversion, committed to on-going Lenten repentance and

awaiting with hope the fulfillment of Jesus’ words: “By patient endurance you will save

your lives.” (Luke 21:19)

Now Might Be The Best Time To Meet With Your Catholic Life Agent For A Review!

Let’s face it, our lives are constantly changing and even more so in this new normal. Life changes can play a significant role in affecting your coverage and retirement needs for the long term.

Just as you might visit your doctor at least once a year to assess your physical health, it is just as vital for you to consult with your Catholic Life Agent to review your financial health.

Here’s what you can expect in an annual review with your Agent:

Update your Information Because change is the only thing that is constant in our lives, your Agent will want to ensure that Catholic Life has your current contact information. Below are some of the most common changes that may occur that will affect our financial plans:

• Address• Email• Phone Numbers – Have you disconnected your landline?• Marital Status• Beneficiaries• Employment Status• Number of Children• Retirement Date• Additions or Losses to your Family

Education on Financial ProductsTo make confident decisions for your family’s future, it is essential to continue your education on insurance/financial products and services. Your Catholic Life Agent can keep you updated on your current plans and educate you on new or additional plans to benefit your family.

Update on New Insurance, Retirement, or Tax Changes As the financial environment changes, your Agent can keep you abreast of any changes that could affect your current and future plans. Some examples may include changes in tax laws, retirement, insurance, and/or estate planning.

Navigate the Four Phases of Financial Independence As time goes on, needs change as your family reaches different phases in their lives. The following are four possible phases that your family members may experience in their lifetime.

1. Preservation and Risk Management PhaseLife insurance and long-term care can play a significant role in protecting your family’s future and well-being.

Catholic Life offers a wide range of insurance plans to meet your needs:• Whole Life• Final Expense• Limited Pay Life• Life Paid Up at 65• Single-Premium Whole Life• Single-Premium Whole Life Plus• Just For Kids Term Insurance• 10, 20, 30 Year Renewable and Convertible Term Plans

2. Accumulation PhaseThe accumulation phase is about creating and accumulating wealth over a period of time toward a specific goal. Examples of accumulation goals can include college savings, home purchases, emergency reserves, and retirement savings.

3. Retirement Distribution/Income PhaseThis is perhaps the most crucial phase of the four, as many of us have spent most of our lives planning and dreaming of this day. Your Catholic Life Agent can help you retire with confidence so that you will not deplete all of your retirement savings as life expectancy expands and investment markets become more volatile.

4. Wealth Transfer and Legacy Planning PhaseYou may reach a point in your life when you have assets that you would like to designate for your children, grandchildren, or favorite charities. Your Catholic Life Advisor can help you achieve a seamless estate transfer to your family or fulfill your charitable contributions.

Confirm you are on Track with your Financial Goals• Do you have enough insurance to protect your family? • Will you be able to retire when you want to? • Do you have a plan if you or your loved ones need long-

term care?• Do you want to burden your children or grandchildren with

your estate?• When was the last time you reviewed these items with

your Catholic Life Agent?

If you DON’T have answers to these most important questions, then PERHAPS this is the best time to meet with your Agent!
