Monday 9 January - Saturday 4 February Preview: Monday 9 January 5.30pm - 7pm

Following the success of the Self Portraitexhibition, another group of Jersey artists havebeen presented with the challenge to createoriginal new work in less than 36 hours. This yearthey may utilise only materials that have beenfound, have already been used in a differentcontext or are naturally occurring in thecountryside. The artists will realise their creations insitu in the Berni Gallery from their chosenmaterials, aided only by preliminary sketches. Thefascinating results will be revealed at the preview.

Sir Eduardo Paolozzi was one of the pioneers ofthe pop art movement in the UK. He was acompulsive collector and a jumbler of icons.Equally revered for his mechanistic sculptures andhis kaleidoscopic print projects, the artist, whodescribed himself as 'a wizard in Toytown',transformed the mundane, the derelict and themass-produced into images that zap with electriceclecticism and impress with their graphiccomplexity. 'Carrots into pomegranates!'

Madagascar, the oldest island in the world andtwice the size of Britain, is the enchanting home tounique people and nature, including the lemur.This exhibition is a series of paintings by artist MattFalle, based on his sketches whilst travelling theisland. A percentage of every sale will be donatedto Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust’s vitalconservation work in Madagascar.

It Snows: Boy doesn’t meet girl, girl doesn’t meetboy; threats from the lad’s (and girl’s) gang; mumand dad have declared war on each other; andthen there’s the weird neighbour opposite. It’s theusual, ordinary gloominess. Then, one day, itsnows. And everything changes...

The Dummy Tree legend has it that mothers taketheir young ones to the tree to give up their dummyand begin the journey towards adulthood. A youngman of 17 visits the tree on the morning of hiswedding to meet his birth mother for the first time.In another time, under the same tree, a 17-year-oldgirl is trying to persuade her little boy to let go of hisdummy...

Pierrepoint: The Hangman’s TaleCafé Society

Albert Pierrepoint was the most celebratedhangman the British judicial system has everproduced. Over a period of 25 years, hemaintained the grim family tradition of providingexecutioners to the State.

Written by Peter Harrison, this hangman’s taleprovides a grim and often disturbing insight intothe reality which lay behind the official phrase‘death by judicial hanging’.
