Clubs description: Steam Lab 101 Science Grades K-2 By Curious on Hudson This is our introduction to science class where students get a taste of a variety of themes including life sciences, engineering, mathematics and technology. The class introduces kids to the concept of exploration through experimentation, hands-on labs and observation. Some classes provide a hands-on project some of which will be taken home at the end of class. Students keep their science journals with a record of their projects and observations. Super Soccer Stars Skills/ Fitness Grades K-2 Instructors: Super Soccer Stars staff Super Soccer Stars goal is to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Our philosophy is to use soccer to nurture, to build self-confidence, and to develop teamwork in every class. Our specially designed curricula use positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun. Green Thumbs Ecology/Nature Grades K-2 By Curious on Hudson Budding gardeners will delight in getting their hands dirty in this exploration of ecology! This class is designed to teach students about the complex and fascinating ecosystem to which we, as humans, also belong and from which we draw our food. We will grow our own food, learn about nutrition, and investigate soils, weather, insects and birds. Using the working classroom garden at Furnace Woods Elementary School, we will examine the light, soil life-cycles of plants and more. Classes will take place both indoors and out, depending on weather and lesson. Class Notes: Requires some sitting and listening time. Involves handling food, soil, plants and other gardening materials. Hands will get dirty! Class will move from indoors to outdoors. Group-based and individual activities during the program. 4

Green Art & Origami Fun

● Express/Japanese Culture and Art ● Grades K-2

Instructor: Kazuko Omori Go green, and turn waste into fabulous art! Reusing materials for art projects is a fun way to recycle, and it’s an excellent way to express their imagination. Students will create a pet animal, sculpture, fun toy or game reusing tissue box, milk carton, tube and more. How to make simple origami figures is also introduced in this class and children can add them to some of their creations. Learning origami in early age is a great way to gain their focus and patience. They will become eco-minded artists with fine motor skills!

ZUMBA for Kids

● Skills/ Fitness ● Grades K-2 & 3-5

Instructor: Krishna Zamora A rockin', high-energy dance club packed with child-friendly routines. Finish your school work day by dancing to the beat! ZUMBA helps develop a healthy lifestyle by incorporating fitness in your child’s life. This club also focuses on development of confidence, memory, creativity, coordination, and cultural awareness.

Rick Lee's Nature Awareness

● Nature and Environmental Education ● Grades K-2

Instructor: Rick Lee Students, come and meet real live Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, Insects and more...as you have an up close & personal fun-filled experience while learning about these very awesome animals we share our Earth Home with! Animals that may live in your own backyard, and even in far away places like Africa, Australia, and South America! Learn how they live and survive, how they help us and how we can help them...Also included are Nature Awareness Games, Storytelling, and weather permitting, Outdoor Explore and Discover Nature Walks around school grounds and trail. This program is geared to helping students Deepen their Awareness of the Natural World and Developed Good Earth Stewardship.

Children’s Yoga & Mindfulness

Instructor: NECS- Marta Gil Learn effective yogic tools to handle stress, anger, anxiety. Practice breathing techniques to calm, energize, and balance the nervous system, practice flowing sequences, challenging poses, partner and group poses, restorative yoga, and deep relaxation. Enhances performance in and enjoyment of sports and other extracurricular activities.

Legos ® in Motion by Bricks 4 Kidz

● Lego ● Grades K-3

Instructor: Bricks4Kidz staff Introduce kids to Sir Isaac Newton’s “Laws of Motion.” We will build fun motorized or movable models like a catapult, a helicopter and more as we explore concepts of inertia, mass, and force to accelerate the learning with the force of fun and Lego® bricks. At Bricks 4 Kidz, we know how to keep their hands and their minds busy---who says Physics is boring?

UMAC-Taekwondo

● Skills/Martial Arts ● Grades K-5

Instructor: Master Berlow Our martial arts program integrates the philosophy of teaching children about Respect, Discipline & Self-Control and Confidence integrated with Learning Martial Arts. If you are you concerned about your child’s ability to focus in school or your child is shy or lacking confidence and if you feel that your child is not getting enough physical exercise we are here to address it all. At the end of each semester students will be invited to a Belt Graduation, where they will demonstrate all that they have learned and will earn their new belts along with breaking a real wood board!

Let’s Knit!

● Skills/DIY ● Grades 1-5

Instructor: Lori Cohen Knitting is a great hobby for both boys and girls. Students will learn the basics of knitting and create a simple accessory of their choice. We will learn about all kinds of yarns and the tools knitters use. Kids will also decorate their own knitting bag and make their own knitting needles. They will get to use a ball winder, knitting machine and more. Students will enjoy being part of a knitting community as they share ideas and encourage each other. As their skills build, they can knit for friends, family, stuffed animals and even take on a communal charity knitting project. Kids will have fun while they learn to love knitting!

Origami Workshop & More

● Japanese culture and Art ● Grades 2-3

Instructor: Kazuko Omori Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, and it transforms a sheet of square paper into a fun 3D object. It helps develop hand-eye coordination & fine motor skills and teaches children to follow directions. In this class children will learn how to make origami pets, toys, games. Additionally they will complete projects using recycled items, challenging their imagination by combining the two art forms. It’s a great and fun way to learn different culture!

Chess-Beginner/Intermediate 

● Analyze and Solve ● Grades 1-5

Instructor: Chris Keefe Introduction to Chess provides beginning or intermediate students of chess a strong foundation in the rules and strategies needed to play the game of chess. This club is designed for students with little to intermediate experience with chess. Playing chess Improves concentration and memory, enhances reading and math skills, fosters logic, critical thinking, and creativity and encourages and rewards hard work.

Intro to Woodworking

● Maker/DIY ● Grades 3-5

By Curious on Hudson This class is an introduction to the basics of woodworking. Class begins by developing an appreciation for wood itself; where wood comes from, what everyday materials are made from it, and how do trees live? How humans and trees interact? Students will learn basic tree identification and a greater understanding of trees as natural resources. Students then move into developing the skills necessary to work with wood, including: how to plan a project and measure wood, use of woodworking tools (hammer, saw, drill, etc), cutting and assembling a project, and sanding and finishing. Each student will complete a finished project (toolbox or art caddy) that they will keep.

Fashion Forward for Girls & Boys

By Hobby Quest Do you march to the beat of our own drum when it comes to a style? Then our all new fashion forward class is for you! This spring you can create one-of-a-kind wearable garments and accessories, such as backpacks, of your very own and make your design dreams a reality. We’ll teach you all you need to know about designing and creation, from choosing a design and sketching, to final fitting! This class is suitable for Boys and Girls designers, beginner to advanced-level, as we will be sewing by hand! To top it off, you’ll strut your stuff and proudly display your new, unique designs in a fashion show for friends and family! All designs are yours to keep at the end of class. Design it! Create it! Keep it!

Intro to Robotics

● Technology ● Grades 3-5

By Curious on Hudson This class introduces students to basic robotics and programming using platforms such as Ozobots™, LEGO™and Edison™programmable robots. Beginning with simple instructions using optical barcodes and scanning, students learn to program devices to follow instructions. As the class progresses, students learn how to program their devices using a software interface on a computer.

Introduction to Acting

● Drama ● Grades 3-5

Instructor: Sione Owen In these acting courses, the main goal is to develop and foster the children's imaginations. They will be encouraged to explore their senses and emotions in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The goals are for them to achieve greater confidence, self-awareness, listening skills, problem-solving skills, cooperation and communication skills, all the while having a lot of fun! Ultimately the hope is to create a sense of well-being and comfort with who they are as developing human beings, as well as to give them fundamental acting techniques needed for further development in theatre arts.

Brain Busters

Instructor: Barb Kopeloff STEM principles, Teamwork, Creativity, Performance. Want to make friends while you face down fierce aliens with gumdrops, build giant towers using only paper and paper clips, or complete other totally bizarre and seemingly impossible challenges? Based on Destination Imagination “instant challenges,” our activities will help develop teamwork, STEM principles, the creative process, time management, performance, and many other 21st century skills while strengthening gray matter and the zygomaticus minor (or laughing) muscles. Think It Faster, Make It Better!

Tynker – Coding

● Coding ● Grades 3-5

By Curious on Hudson This class uses the TYNKER platform to introduce concepts of programming to students in scaffolded interactive sessions that allow students to gauge their individual progress through the lessons. The curriculum is developed by Tynker itself and provides an engaging way to develop programming skills in a creative mode, i.e., students follow lessons and then create games to demonstrate the programming concepts. Tynker offers the same graphical interface as Scratch but also offers the structured lessons that previous students of Scratch (previous Scratch training is not required) may find more engaging as a means to develop and demonstrate gained skills. The instructor introduces programming concepts and then assists students in achieving their individual goals.

Nature, Animals and primitive Survival skills & Crafts with Ranger Rick Lee

● Nature and Environmental Education ● Grades 3-5

Instructor: Rick Lee Students will have a fun-filled learning experience as they explore, discover, build confidence while connecting with history and the natural world. They, will learn some of the living and survival skills once used by the Native Americans & Pioneers of old, right here around The Furnace Woods Elementary School and in their own backyards! Students will learn how to find water, food, make fire, and make "their own" Primitive tools. The joy of teamwork will will be exercised when we make a real survival shelter on the school grounds! As an added learning treat...students will meet and get "up close & personal" with some very awesome animals, such as : Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, insects and more...
