Spring Dedication Celebration! Sunday, June 2, 2013
Have you noticed?
There has been a lot of action at Redwood lately! A new playground,
new altar, new baptismal font, new altar rails,
beautiful new memorial garden area, the list goes on.
What better way to celebrate but with a dedication by Pastor Brad and
delicious pot-luck following the 11:00 a.m. service on June 2, 2013.
Please plan to join us!
The church is not an institution to be maintained, but a people on a mission. In the
Book of Acts, we read how the Christian movement spread like wildfire—leaping
huge obstacles, and bridging wide cultural barriers. These are stories of very ordi-
nary people doing extraordinary things by God’s power. Join us this summer as we
journey with the early Christians as they boldly take their faith to the streets. It is a
journey that will, quite literally, lead us to leave the building—becoming a people
who go out each Sunday into a Monday where we make a difference in the world.

Party Time!
Late last winter, the Praise Band debuted at
the 8:30 service what has become a new an-
them around our house: “Celebrate Je-
sus!” (Think a flagrant, over-the-top, Chris-
tian remake of the Kool & The Gang classic “Celebrate
Good Times—Come On!”) Not only did the Praise Band
rock out on this song, but it filled the sails of my kids! Even
as recently as last week, I heard one of the kids bouncing
through the house singing, “There’s a party goin’ on round
here. It’s a celebration that lasts throughout the
year….Celebrate Jesus! Come on!”
To be honest, there’s a part of me which, like the Prodigal
Son’s older brother, cringes at such over-the-top, joyous ex-
pressions of reckless abandon. After all, there’s a lot of seri-
ous stuff going on in the world! Young girls are being sold
as sex slaves. Terrorists kill and maim with bombs on race
day. Tornados strike. Soldiers die in Afghanistan. Children
die for lack of clean water. The realist in me says, “What’s
there to party about?” In fact, I insisted that the Praise Band
change the lyrics of the song, taking out the word “laughter,”
so that we sing, “So bring your good times, and your bad
times, too.” Life isn’t always a celebration.
AND YET…we’ve just come through the season of Easter
and Pentecost—the two holiest, most joyous days of the
Christian year! Easter and Pentecost scream out, “Paaaar-
TAY!” Jesus died. He is risen. He ascended to heaven.
And now he has sent his Spirit upon his followers. In all of
this, God has overcome! Victory is ours! In fact, the as-
tounding story of the Book of Acts (which we’re hearing in
worship this summer) is of a people so filled with joy at what
God has done, that they simply cannot contain themselves!
Their missionary endeavors to spread the gospel are not done
with a sense of grave seriousness, as though the salvation of
Ruminations and Reflections from the Pastor’s Study
the world depended upon their efforts. No! Their
“acts” are like the irrepressible joy which bubbles
over, and cannot be complete until it’s been shared
with others. The story of Acts is of an infectious
victory party which spreads from place-to-place until
all the known world has heard the sound of it—even
if many choose not to join the festivities!
My study of Acts—and my experience in ministry—
have taught me that churches which change the
world are not churches where anxious, worried peo-
ple get serious about addressing the world’s prob-
lems. Churches which change the world are ones
where joyous people get serious about confronting
the world’s problems with the victory song of Jesus
Christ. It’s not up to us to save the world. Jesus has
already done that! Our responsibility is to celebrate
that victory even in those seemingly hopeless places.
And that’s not easy! (Ask anyone who’s labored
with Celebrate Recovery.) Yet, somehow, God uses
this to change the world through us! So, friends, this
summer, let’s celebrate! “Celebrate Jesus! Come
on!”
Your brother in Christ,
Brad Dulaney
Pastor

In Loving Memory….
To Our Redwood U.M. Church Family
We would like to take this time to thank each and every
one for the many acts of kindness shown to the family
during the illness and passing of our mother, Katie L.
Wray.
The cards, calls, visits, flowers, food, thoughts and
prayers were very uplifting during this difficult time.
We are so blessed to be a part of such a caring church
family, Mom loved all of you.
A very special thanks to the ladies of the church for the
wonderful celebration meal that was enjoyed by many.
This was a blessing to the family.
With love to all,

A Word from the Committee on Records,
History and Memorials.
The committee decided in 2010 to stop the practice of
placing dedicatory plaques on items in and around the
church. Recognizing the need families have to see the
name of their loved ones at church, we’re looking at the
memorial bricks from here forward in the “The Garden
of Memory and Prayer” as the place where names will
be etched for people to see and remember deceased and
loved ones.
The committee has purchased a Memorial Dedication
book which will be kept at the church. This book will be
the place where all memorial dedications are recorded
from here forward. For instance, it would record
“Bench in Prayer Garden—Dedicated to the Glory of
God and in memory of ________”. The Memorial
Book, when filled out, will be placed in the Welcome
Center.
Thank You

EYES AND EARS OF JESUS
We are the eyes and ears of Jesus on earth today.
It is our duty to be watching and listening to peo-
ple around us, recognizing when they have needs
for care. If you find someone with a need, listen
and care. If you find the need is something
greater than you can meet, tell the person about
our Stephen Ministry and put him or her in touch
with Pastor Brad.
Jesus is depending on us to be his eyes and ears
on earth.
At the end of every worship session on Friday night, we say the
Serenity Prayer together. This prayer reminds us that God is in
control and that we need to let Him stay in control. Per-
haps this prayer will resonate for you—particularly if you
are experiencing difficult times:
Prayer for Serenity
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot
change, the courage to change the things I can, and the
wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a
pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make
all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be
reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with
You forever in the next. Amen.

Susan Hughes to be Appointed as Minister of Community Outreach – As many of
you are aware, Susan graduated from seminary this spring, and will be commissioned as a
Provisional Deacon during the Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist
Church in Hampton in June. (Hopefully many of you can attend Redwood Church’s live
simulcast of Susan’s commissioning service.) As a Provisional Deacon, Susan is respon-
sible for securing her own employment, but she is still appointed to this field of service by
the Bishop and cabinet. Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) has worked with
the Bishop and cabinet to secure her appointment here. Beginning July 1, Susan will be
the part-time Minister of Community Outreach at Redwood UMC.
In addition to assisting with worship leadership and pastoral care duties, Susan will:
Lead small groups for Bible study and/or spiritual formation.
Provide staff presence for the CR community.
Provide staff support for the Outreach Ministry Team.
Serve as an ambassador of Redwood UMC to the greater community by working with community minis-
tries and organizations, seeking strategic partnerships which will connect and empower the laity to serve in
the community
The SPRC celebrates this new appointment, and looks forward to the fruits God will bear through Susan’s ministry
among us as a Provisional Deacon.

What is so rare as a day in June?????
Answer: A Methodist church that makes changes on a
timely basis.
Hey all,
Wanted to take this opportunity to update you all on
our progress on the sanctuary lighting upgrade that was
initiated as a result of our church wide survey in the
spring of 2012. Having been a lifelong Methodist I
know that any time a project is moving too slowly we
will form a committee to take the situation under ad-
visement. (Cue laugh track) Right now we are accept-
ing bids from electrical contractors to do the high volt-
age end of the installation. The actual lights and con-
trols have been ordered and are awaiting the power
supply. We should move forward quickly once we give
the go ahead to the electrical installers.
Also, a quick shout out to Mugsy and Knuckles,
who not only produce this award winning publication
but have graciously spared my family from harm as my
textual submissions each month have come so close to
the deadline. I'm sure that the Anderson and Dulaney
families celebrate and humbly accept your mercies as
well. I'm starting to like working on Memorial Day!
