The President’s Message Welcome Spring! I am happy to say
that most of the events for the year are
finalized, like the Spring dinner which
will be at the Huntingdon Country
club. This should be a “not to be
missed” event: a very special program
for a very special person (you must
attend to find out who), entertainment,
AND a cash bar. As if that wasn’t
enough, to encourage “getting out the
members” the dinners will be ONLY $10 per person. I feel sorry for any
member who has a scheduling conflict with this event.
Scholarship - I am also happy to announce that the region board approved the
scholarship to Penn College again this year. The award recipient will be
determined by the college in April or May and hopefully, we can give you
some details about our recipient then.
New members - I am hoping to have time at our next region board meeting to
start several membership drive initiatives. Please consider attending with your
ideas. Our next meeting is at the Mill Stone Manor Restaurant in Huntingdon
on Friday evening May 12th at 5PM for supper and 6PM for the meeting (yes,
the restaurant is back open, or I should say back in business, after the roof left
the building).
2017 region calendar - To review the schedule for 2017 we have the
Boalsburg Show, Forsht picnic, Tipton Show, Swigart meet, and cook’s nights
out are on the schedule (see calendar in this Vapor Locks for more details).
Other local events include a 1 day tour in the Altoona area in May 20, a 1 day
tour to the Amish Cheese factory in late July, a 3 day tour to the Potomac
Eagle railroad in September, and a 1 day Fall foliage Grape Escape to Bedford
area in mid-October. Most of the dates for the events are now set so please
review the Vapor Locks calendar mark your calendars. As always, please
forward suggestions or ideas you have to a board member or come to a board
meeting.
National touring - Ellen and I have decided to attend the AACA Founder’s
Tour in Gettysburg June 4-9. The tour is for 1932 and NEWER antique cars.
Please let me know if you plan to join us. It would be great to have additional
region members to join us for the week. We also plan to attend the AACA
Vintage Tour in Wellsboro, PA July 16-21 for cars 1932 and older. This is
hosted by a great group, the Buzzard Breath touring region of AACA. We are
undecided about the Glidden tour in Lincoln, NE September 17-22, even
President’s Message page 2
though I am sure region members Pat Swigart, Emery and Sheila Turner and
Dave Kontor will be attending. Also don’t forget the VMCCA Chrome
Glidden Tour which is in Virginia July 9-14.
National shows - As far as national shows coming up soon, the AACA Spring
meet is in Charlotte, NC on April 6-9 and the AACA Auburn Show is in
Auburn, IN on May 11-13. Both are super events. I would love to attend one
of these, but nothing is confirmed as of today. Call me any time and
encourage me to go!
AACA museum merger - For those hoping for some better news regarding the
merger between AACA museum (the name has not yet changed as of today)
and AACA national, I have no new news. Unfortunately, as of today it
appears that financial pressures have not yet become strong enough to bring
the museum back to the bargaining table. As I said before, I believe that
financial pressures will ultimately produce a merger. Of course, it would have
been far better for everyone if the museum had followed a more cooperative
route in the past. When I see something that the region can do to help affect
the merger I will tell the region, however, at this time, I have not identified
anything we can do.
Fun - Getting back to having fun, our next cook’s night out is at Dave’s dream
in Hollidaysburg at 6:30PM. Be there! And again, our next regi on board
meeting is at Mill Stone Manor Restaurant in Huntingdon on Friday evening
May 12th at 5PM for supper and 6PM for the meeting.
Look forward to seeing you at an event soon. And, as always, feel free to
contact me anytime and anywhere about comments, ideas, concerns, and
suggestions.
Personal - Oh yes, I almost forgot an important event this week – our
granddaughter, Riley, just took her first steps just days after her 1st birthday.
Look for this little jewel at the Boalsburg Show.
Back to the shop!
Your President, Scott Deno
Allegheny Mountain Region Board Meeting
February 18, 2017
Mill Stone Manor Restaurant, Huntingdon, PA
In attendance: President Scott Deno, Vice President and Vapor Locks Editor
Gladys Guyer, Treasurer Pete Searer, Secretary Patricia Swigart, Board Members,
Bill Guyer, Cathy Searer, and Robert Struble.
The meeting was called to order at 1:10 P.M. by President Deno.
The minutes of the January 21, 2017 Board Meeting were published in the
Vapor Locks. Upon motion of Cathy Searer, seconded by Pete Searer minutes
were approved. Motion carried.
The Financial Report was given by Treasurer Searer. Upon motion of Gladys
Guyer, seconded by Pat Swigart, the treasurer’s report was received. It will be
filed for audit.
Old Business
Membership Badges
Gladys has been working on Membership Badges. She presented two different
ideas for consideration. Upon motion by Cathy, seconded by Pete it was decided
to get the badge with the picture of the mountains on it in. Upon motion of Pete,
seconded by Cathy it was decided to charge $5.00 a piece for those members
wishing to have one. Gladys will put the information in the Vapor Locks.
It was suggested at the January Board meeting to check on polo/golf shirts to
be used for Region events such as meets, tours and shows. Gladys will look into
this. It was decided a light blue shirt with ALLEGHENY MOUNTAIN REGION
AACA on the front would look very nice. The price of each shirt will be decided
that we will charge about $10.00 each. Again, the order form will be in the Vapor
Locks.
New Business Feather Flags
Fred Hammer suggested that we get a Feather Flags to be used as an attraction
for our shows. After discussion, this was tabled for future consideration.
Boalsburg Show
Gladys suggested that we get a Lottery Tree such as we had for the Founders Tour
and also a Money Cake and sell raffle tickets. She will check with Susan
Romanian to see if she will get the Lottery Tree. Gladys volunteered to make the
Money Cake. Upon motion of Cathy, seconded by Pete, it was decided to have
both of these money making things at the show but not to spend more than
$100.00 each in making them.
Last year we got $500.00 worth of Sheetz Gift Cards for random drawings at the
shows. Cathy volunteered to get them again this year.
Board page 2
Last year Fred and Nina contacted businesses for contribution for the random
drawing and got a tremendous amount of items. They are willing to chair this this
year but will need some additional help. Anyone who is willing to help should
contact Fred. Gladys and Scott stated they would help. Gladys has worked on an
informational paper to be given to businesses in order to make them aware of
what their donations are used for. She has also made up a paper to be given to
participants at the show.
Gladys will be in charge of Registration. At this table she will have the AACA
flyers to give to non-members.
Fred and Nina will take charge of the Membership table.
Scott would like to have anyone available to help set up be at the field on
Sunday evening at 6:00 P.M. and take down after the show.
Gladys presented an idea for consideration which was support a nearby
Region by attending an event. She suggested the Kuntz town Kruise which would
allow us to do a 2 or 3 day tour. President Deno stated he really liked the idea of
supporting a nearby region but wanted it to be Clearfield Region. He is checking
to see when the Clearfield Show is being held. This is a topic for the next Board
Meeting.
Gladys also suggested a one day tour to Hanksters in Indiana, PA. President
Deno stated we would keep this in mind as a possibility in the future.
Schedule
The balance of the events for the year 2017 was finalized. See listing in this
issue of the Vapor Locks.
The Spring Dinner will be held at the Huntingdon Country Club on April
29th. To continue trying to get new members and having more members
participate, a motion was made by Pete, seconded by Cathy that we charge $10.00
a person for this dinner. See the reservation form in the Vapor Locks. Pat will be
in charge.
The next meeting of the Allegheny Mountain board will be held on Friday,
May 12, 2017 at the Mill Stone Manor. Dinner will be at 5:00 P.M. with the
meeting at 6:00 P.M. All members are welcome to attend.
Adjournment Upon motion of Gladys, seconded by Cathy the meeting adjourned at 3:40.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia B. Swigart, Secretary

Maintaining Regions’ and Chapters’ Vitality By William Gardner
VP Central Division
Development and Support
During recent years, many AACA Regions and
Chapters have been faced with challenges of
maintaining and growing their membership. These
challenges are, in part, based upon: a) an inactive or
aging membership; b) a lack of good leadership within
the organization; or c) attracting new AACA members
to join their Region or Chapter. The following suggestions are provided for Regions and Chapters to consider in
addressing these challenges. Regarding the inactive or aging membership
challenge, Region and Chapters should consider examining the date/time and type
of their activities. Typical dinner meetings could possibly be altered to luncheons
or members could plan to arrange transportation for members with transportation
needs. Sometimes just altering the meeting time or date could affect attendance.
Addressing the transportation needs of individuals can express to them that their
presence is still appreciated and welcomed. Finally, changing the types of
activities could enhance attendance of inactive members. A personal phone call
to an inactive member may initiate their participation in future activities.
Good leadership is essential for Regions and Chapters to remain vital. The
elected officers should understand their respective responsibilities and duties and
be willing to serve and abide by the adopted By-laws, in addition to the principles
and purposes of AACA. One aspect of a good leader is the ability to request
feedback and be open to suggestions. Another leadership aspect is getting
members involved and feeling a part of the group. A third aspect is keeping the
membership informed of future activities for planning purposes. This can be
accomplished by having an active newsletter and/or website.
The third challenge of attracting new AACA members can be addressed by fellow
Region or Chapter members looking for opportunities for membership growth
when attending local antique car shows or cruise-ins. An application and contact
information can be placed on the windshield of an antique vehicle at these events. An AACA membership table could be established at these types of events.
I encourage each Region and Chapter to consider these suggestions and develop
other solutions in meeting the challenge of maintaining their vitality.

1. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided
to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would
tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she
headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I really think you should try to figure
out some of these colors yourself!"
2. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the
lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a
few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's
no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.
The Editor's Desk
Hi everyone,
Spring is here right? The robins are back and flowers are
beginning to bloom. The weather is starting to get
warmer. Many of us may be thinking the same thing.
Spring is here but sooner than we want it will be gone.
Get your motor running and enjoy it while you can and drive your car to
events the region has planned.
Mark your calendar, the Spring dinner will be held on April 29 at the Country
Club in Huntingdon located on Rt. 26 S.
There are several reasons you will not want to miss this dinner. #1 you can
drive the old car, #2 enjoy socializing with fellow members #3, the food will
be delicious, #4 the cost to you is very reasonable $10.00, #5 there is going to
be entertainment and #6 President Deno has a secret surprise that I can't tell
you. Shh! You just have to come!
Into May we go and you will have a chance to participant in the first 1 day
tour for 2017 in the Altoona Area.
On Memorial Day we will hold our annual show in Boalsburg (You will see
more elsewhere in VL). Check the schedule of events and keep the dates you
can attend.
Take a chance, take the region plunge. Why not meet up with other members
in your town, attend functions and become an active member.
Check out the information on Region Badges and also Region shirts. These
are going to be very nice. Info on both of these is elsewhere in this VL.
See you on the road!

How many times when you have been to a show or dinner and think
you know someone but can't remember the person's name. Probably
more often than we would like to omit.
Wouldn't it be nice to
wear a Region name
badge, to allow others to
know your name and
represent AMR?
Others will actually be
able to put a name with
the face.
A name badge has been designed and approved by the Board for
members of AMR. The size of the badge will be 2" x 3" (the size
above) made of aluminum with strong premium magnetic backing, easy
to put on and easy to take off. It will look like the one pictured above.
You can see the color in version of the badge in this issue of Vapor
Locks on our website. Members cost for a name badge is $5.00, quite
affordable for everyone.
If you would like to order a badge, I am taking orders. An order form
is in the front of this issue of Vapor Locks. All you need to do is write
your name the way you would like to have it printed on the Badge and
mail it with your $5.00. You can also turn in your order at Cook's Nite
or the Spring Dinner. The badges will be completed by Memorial Day
or sooner.
If you have any questions, contact either Gladys or Scott.

A history of Automobiles from 1900 - 1991
by Ed Miller as published in the
AACA Southeastern National Winter Meet Magazine
1910 - 1919
U.S. Car Sales:
1910 181,000
1910 Big 3 U.S.
Producers:
Ford 32,053
Buick 30,525
Willys-Overland

At the beginning of
the decade, Ford was
just starting to gear up
for undreamed of
production. In the last
year of the decade,
Ford would sell
820,445 Model T's at
ever decreasing
prices. Starting in
1912, Cadillac
technology offered the
public a modern
electrical self-starting
system created by
Frank Kettering. No
more cranking the
engine by hand with a
risk of a broken arm
or worse. Also,
electric bulbs replaced
acetylene headlamps.
Tires became much
more reliable. Rather than last several hundred miles, tires could last a few
thousand miles. Also during 1912, the harmonic balancer was developed. It’s
made of rubber and metal and significantly reduces engine vibration.
Although there were no car collectors, a few strange folks retired their old car
in the back of the barn when they purchased a new car. There was no thought of
that old Knox or White increasing in value. Probably it had been an important
part of the family and rather than scrap it the old car was placed in retirement.
This Series will continue in the next issue of Vapor Locks.

JUST FOR THOUGHT
Memorial Day
Memorial Day has come to mean the beginning of summer, a time for picnics
and barbecues, and a holiday to gather around the family. That happiness and
freedom, however, is a product of the real cause for the holiday: the sacrifice
made by men and women who have fought and died for the freedoms and
liberties Americans hold dear. Memorial Day is a time to remember that the
American way of life is not cheap but rather has been purchased by the lives
and blood of so many who have sacrificed for us to live free and happily now. Author Emily Toma

I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine
saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform so young, so tall,
so proud, he'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him had
fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers'
tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many
foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free. I heard the sound of
TAPS one night, when everything was still I listened to the bugler play and felt a
sudden chill. I wondered just how many times that TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the
children, of the mothers and the wives, of fathers, sons and husbands with
interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea of
unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn't free.
