BOSTON MENSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE From the LocSecby Ed Meyer

As the Boston LocSec I am pleased to welcome our newest ‘Life Member’, my wife, Louise Meyer. Yes, after too many years of procrastinating, she finally took the Mensa Admissions Test with Dr. Peter Bradley on April 30, 2016. After 10 days of nervously waiting she finally received a notice that read: “Dear Louise, CONGRATULATIONS! Your Mensa Admission testing has been scored and, based on the percentile rank, you qualify for admission to Mensa."

Our fourth annual EDGE trip to the free Touch Tomorrow Festival of Science, Technol-ogy, Robots and more at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is coming up (rain or shine) on Saturday June 11, 2016. This is a great, family friendly, event for all you techies and techie wannabes. This is an especially great event for kids of all ages. See event notification and directions in this edition of the Beacon.

Karen & Otto Kunz will be hosting their 29th annual Spring Fling at the Ugly Fox Lounge party at their home in Shrewsbury, MA at 7:00pm on Friday June 17th. Please see the Kunz’s announcement with information and directions for this very popular social event in this edition of the Beacon. Note: We believe this may also be their 175th published event(!). Karen & Otto, thank you for all you do for Boston Mensa!

We had more than two dozen members attend our annual ‘New / Old Members Meet & Greet Party’ at Rick Kovalcik’s home last month. It was great to see a number of new and recently inactive members attend this event. We had great food and great conver-sation. Our thanks to Rick for running this event.

Mensa Admissions Testing: Do you know someone who would like to take our Mensa Admissions Test? On April 26, 2016 AML announced that for the month of June the Mensa Practice Test will be discounted to $9.99 and that ‘Nationwide Supervised Test-ing will be discounted to $20’ for the month of July.

Region 1 Roundupby Lisa Maxwell

As I sit in hospitality overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Cod, Boston Mensa’s mini-RG, I am reminded of why I love my Mensa family. Some of the attendees are folks I only see once or twice a year, but we enjoy the opportunity to catch up and spend time together.

It's a national family–we have people here from Virginia, Texas, and all over the Northeast. Snippets of some conversations include:

"And there was a guy in a dinosaur costume performing musical theatre numbers."

"Smart and stupid are not mutually exclusive."

"Is there a group in the area that meets to discuss politics?"

"He brought an extension cord to bring the blender out to the hot tub."

Hope you'll join us at an upcoming event or gathering soon, and become part of our extended family.

News from National:

The AMC (American Mensa Committee - the national board of directors) held a teleconference meeting in May - the recording of the session is available online at: http://www.us.mensa.org/lead/amc/meeting-reports/

Around the Region:o Vermont Mensa holds a monthly dinner meeting at Big Fatty’s Barbecue in White River Junction followed by games at a nearby location. Great folks, food and fun games. All are welcome.

o Boston Mensa's Spring Fling on June 17th is a long standing event not to be missed. "There will be food, music, games and quite a quantity of terrible jokes.

We look forward to seeing you and sharing this happy time together at this family-friendly and convivial event."

Upcoming Region 1 events:

We are planning to have a Region 1 Meet & Greet at the AG in San Diego. The sched-uled day and time is Wednesday, June 29th at 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm — mark your calen-dar and stay tuned for more details. Would love to kick off the event with a gathering of all of us from Region 1 who are in San Diego. Last year, a group of us met poolside for snacks and beverages.

This month's question for you…

If you are still reading at this point, and plan to attend the AG in San Diego, bring me a purple flower while there, and I will buy you a beverage.

And finally, if you are struggling to find a presidential candidate to put your support behind, consider a write-in candidate – Deb Stone for POTUS! She's getting my vote.

ExComm Meeting Minutes APPROVED February 22, 2016A regular meeting of the Boston Mensa Executive Committee was called to order by LocSec Ed Meyer at 7:00pm at the home of Tom & Wendy Birchmire in Needham, MA. Present: Tom & Wendy Birchmire, Dennis Higbee, Rick Kovalcik, Ben McCarty (via phone), Ed Meyer, Elizabeth (Liz) Modesitt, Gary Schwartz, and Sonia Verrochi.

Guests: Phil Baun, Glenn Fernandes, and Patti McCarty (via phone).

E-mail votes since last meeting: “To move the date for our next ExComm meeting to Monday February 22nd, 2016 again at Tom & Wendy Birchmire’s home. Dinner at 6:30pm, meeting at 7:00pm”. We had 6 yes votes and 0 no votes. Having received votes from 2/3rds of the ExComm, voting was officially closed.

Unexcused Absence Count: Jeff Prowse (2)

The minutes from the December 2015 ExComm meeting were presented and ap-proved.

Officer and Committee Reports

LocSec: Ed Meyer reported that while we still need a Gifted Children’s Coordinator for Boston Mensa, he has been in regular contact with Region 1 Gifted Children’s Coordinator Matt Ventura. Together they are actively problem solving the issue.

Beacon (newsletter): Ben McCarty said the Beacon would like more photos of cur-rent Boston Mensa activities and events. Subscriptions are averaging about 540 in print and 610 for electronic delivery. Questions were raised as to the actual costs of postage and printing per newsletters.

Meetup Coordinator: According to Wendy Birchmire, we have about 138 verified members on our Meetup site and all is well with that.

Testing Coordinator: 12 people tested so far in February 2016. There is testing scheduled in Dedham and Salem for March 2016, and Worcester in April 2016.

Treasurer: The checkbook balance of $29,044.85 reconciles to the bank balance. Tom Birchmire provided the ExComm with a report detailing profits, losses, and other relevant information.

Unfinished Business

After discussion, the ExComm concluded that no further efforts are needed at this time to convert members from a paper version of the Beacon to an electronic subscrip-tion.

At the December 2015 ExComm meeting, the ExComm agreed to reimburse two members for the cost of their hotel rooms at the recent 2015 Leadership Development Workshop in Albany, NY. Rick Kovalcik shared a reimbursement policy from another organization that he is active with. Then he agreed to write up a similar policy for Bos-ton Mensa and e-mail it to the ExComm before our April 2016 meeting.

Boston Mensa received 277 pages of scholarship essays, which were scored and then submitted to the National Office. The ExComm thanked Scholarship Chair Rick Koval-cik and all who helped judge the essays.

Ed Meyer continues to handle order fulfillment and shipping for our Wicked Smaht T-shirts. We now have all sizes Small through XXXL back in stock again.

New Business

Jayne Rossetti expressed willingness to serve again as Election Committee Chair and submitted proposed petition rules for candidates running for ExComm offices. Rob Granville previously informed ExComm he would be on the election committee. Dur-ing the discussion, Sonia Verrochi agreed to be the third member needed. Liz Modesitt motioned to appoint Jayne Rossetti as Election Committee Chair, to appoint Rob Gran-ville and Sonia Verrochi as the committee members, and to approve the petition rules as submitted by Jayne. Ed Meyer seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Ed Meyer went over the highlights of the recent Regional Vice-Chair Report from our Region 1 RVC Lisa Maxwell.

Rick Kovalcik agreed to host a New Members Party in the first half of 2016. He and Wendy Birchmire will work together to get the event published in the Beacon and on our Meetup site.

Per the request of National, we reviewed the copy of our local group charter that they sent us.

Next Meeting and Adjournment
