Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party!

Welcome to Junction!

Celebrating its seventh year, this multi-arts event in Northern Tasmania highlights our creativity, imagination and innovation.

The Junction program features Tasmanian artists and arts companies with a focus on art installations, music, theatre and dance, and all in unexpected places.

Junction is a great event and we are proud to support it.

Will Hodgman MP Premier

I am delighted to again introduce the Junction Arts Festival for 2017 now in its seventh year.

Launceston is proud to host the Junction Arts Festival.

In 2016 Junction moved the Festival to Prince’s Square; the Festival hub will once again be staged in these beautiful surroundings.

This Festival is one of the City of Launceston’s signature events and I would like to thank the dedicated and passionate team who make this Festival possible.

Albert van Zetten Mayor of Launceston

Tasmania has so many fabulous artists right here that span across visual arts, music and performance – and it’s worth celebrating. Get ready for five days of stunning art, light shows, comedy and interactive performances. Junction is about fun and adventure – AND you get to enjoy delicious Tasmanian food and award-winning wine, spirits and ciders all taking place in Launceston’s iconic Prince’s Square.

Liz Frankham President & Chair, Junction Arts Festival

Throughout Junction’s 33-event program you will find extraordinary experiences by incredible artists, creating amazing things. Over five days and nights in the first week of spring, we will celebrate Tasmanian art, performance, music, food and wine.

Local artists, musicians, performers, dancers and writers have been invited to let loose in unusual spaces in and around Launceston’s stunning Prince’s Square. Hear some of the best music being created in Tasmania at the Fountain Bar and Acoustic Picnic. Go on a self-guided evening art walk at Nightlight. See captivating performances by Launceston theatre companies Mudlark and Relevant and experience a rock’n’roll after-party in an actual hotel room in Uta Uber Kool Ja.

And exclusive to Junction, don’t miss our special guest performers in the Prince’s Palace circus tent.

A quick tip: we’d recommend you book your tickets early for artists such as cabaret star Michael Griffiths, world-renowned circus performer Dr. Hubble and award-winning multi-instrumentalist Adam Page.

Prince’s Square — The Festival Hub

Launceston’s beautiful 19th century square will again be transformed into the Festival Hub and centre of all the action. This year’s Junction artwork is based on the Square’s symmetry with its four paths crossing at the central point of the awesome Val d’Osne Fountain and its circular pond.

At Prince’s Square you’ll be able buy tickets to shows, meet friends and family, enjoy a refreshing drink from one of the bars or grab a bite to eat from a great selection of food vans. Don’t miss seeing award-winning cabaret, kid’s shows, music and comedy in Junction’s newest intimate pop-up venue, the Prince’s Palace.

Last year’s hit, the fully licensed Fountain Bar also returns with a FREE music program that runs throughout the Festival.

Plus, don’t miss out on the stunning Fountain Light Show each evening, which is your starting point for Nightlight, a free self-guided art walk that the whole family will enjoy!

Entry to the Festival hub in Prince’s Square is free and is for all ages.

Tickets to shows can be purchased online at junctionartsfestival.com.au or from the Prince’s Square Box office.

Town Crossings – Launceston

AN OSCA PROJECT BY PAUL GAZZOL A Town Crossings is an ongoing experimental mapping project that invites participants (players) to take a Frisbee and make a journey. Players are encouraged to warm up at the Frisbee golf course marked out in Prince’s Square and to then take a Frisbee on a meandering adventure around Launceston.

Players are invited to return to Prince’s Square during the Festival and mark your route on a large-scale map of the town. Each player will also be asked to photographically capture their Frisbee adventure and report back his or her incidental conversations and playful exchanges (invoked by throwing a passer-by a Frisbee).

The collected stories, interactions, strategies of play and photographic images (amassed from these and over 70 other Frisbee journeys made in Australia and internationally since 2015), will become part of an evolving poetic narrative presented by Paul over two evenings in the Prince’s Palace.

Wig Out

Let’s get Wiggy with it! Hot on the heels of last year’s Fluffy Toy Time comes another great event for kids – Wig Out.

Bring your most out there, bright, curly, frizzy and ‘mullety’ wig you’ve got. We’re aiming for the biggest parade of wigs in the world, so come along, bring a friend (big or small), and show off your wig! We encourage the whole family to come wearing crazy wigs or get your kids to join in the free wig decorating workshops with Launceston’s Team Textiles.

All participants are invited to parade around Prince’s Square followed by a kid’s disco with DJ Grinning Cat.
