‘KIRK SESSION AT HOME’

After noting declining numbers in attendance in the last year or two the KirkSession has decided to review the design of this long running social event,

(61 years ) to which ‘senior’ (pensioner) members and those who have beenwidowed have traditionally been invited. A small group carried out aconsultation exercise and as a result a change of format has been agreed, to betried out experimentally this year.Three aspects in particular have altered. Firstly, there will be a change from

serving ‘dinner’ to our guests to a slightly less formal ‘Afternoon Tea’approach. Secondly, we have decided on a move away from Saturdayafternoon to a Friday. Thirdly we are taking the event out of the church toCarronvale House by way of a change of scene.Entertainment is still very much on the agenda however, and for those who

require it, transport to and from the event will be provided. The date set is 22nd March and invitations will be coming out via the elders.

Please reply promptly as places at Carronvale are limited to 50 and will beallocated on a first come first served basis. Also, if you, or another memberyou know, are eligible but don’t receive an invitation please let your elderknow. "

KIRK SESSION NEWS…..

The arrangements for March Communion…The Morning Communion will be at 10.30am.

The Afternoon Communion is at 2.30pm.

News of the Presbytery Plan for the Larbert Churches

In the last Eastwords, following a special meeting of Presbytery, theagreement reached about the churches in the Larbert area was thatLarbert East and Larbert Old remain as having their own minister;

Airth and Bothkennar and Carronshore link, and Stenhouse and Carronand Larbert West link, reducing the number of ministers from 5.5 to 4.All the churches also have to agree to change parish boundaries toensure a more equal distribution of parish populations.

Since then, the Presbytery Plan, with some adjustment to other areas, has been agreed centrally by the Ministries Council. However, both

Stenhouse and Carron and Bothkennar and Carronshore have appealedagainst Presbytery’s decision, and at the time of writing, we stillawait the outcome of their appeals.

It remains the case that no changes will take place until one or otherof the present ministers in the 4 churches most affected by the changesretires or moves to another charge.

The Kirk Session will continue to keep members and friends in LarbertEast informed of any further developments. Please, as always, remember this whole situation in your prayers.

WORLD MISSION S.O.S. Save Old Stamps

The Church of Scotland Stamp Centre raisesthousands of pounds annually for World Mission. Thisis currently contributing to this year’sProject in LEBANON where refugees are taughtagricultural skills to help them earn a living.

The total raised so far for this Project is £2,479-50.The next Project will be announced soon. The success of these projects depends on you and the many friends of thecongregation, far and wide, who faithfully save every used stamp they can lay theirhands on! Thank you, one and all.Use the boxes at the back of the church or give your used stamps toErnie Macintyre who will see that they are delivered to the World Mission office inEdinburgh. Remember, damaged stamps have NO VALUE, so leave a good border roundeach stamp. If you have an OLD STAMP ALBUM lying forgotten in a drawer or a cupboard, why notconsider donating it to World Mission? It would not only contribute to the work of W.M.,but might even find a home with an active Stamp collector who would treasure yourcollection.

Thank-you again for your valuable support.

If I was kind to animals and gave sweeties to all the children, would that get me into Heaven?”“NO!”He was just bursting with pride for them!“Then how can I get into heaven?”A wee boy shouted out, “YUV GOAT TAE BE DEID!”

Happy New Year from Christian Aid. This is going to be a very busy andhopefully fruitful year in our fight against poverty.

CA has joined forces with 50 other organizations including Save theChildren; UNICEF and Oxfam under the banner ‘ENOUGH FOOD FOREVERYONE – IF’.This campaign will be the largest mass campaign movement since ‘MakePoverty History’. It is hoped that 20 million people will support it throughprayer, by writing to MP’s and the Government regarding aid and taxdodging by multi-national companies. In June the UK hosts a ‘Food and Hunger Summit followed by the G8 Summitin Northern Ireland – another opportunity to contact our Government toshow our support for the campaign. More details on christianaid.org.uk/if.

There is enough food in the world for everyone, yet almost 900 millionpeople in the world go hungry and 2 million children die from malnutrition.

How can we ignore this? It is a scandal and must be challenged. As a church we will be keeping you informed about IF.

Dates to remember:Bridge Walk - 20th April 2013Christian Aid Coffee Morning - 18th May 2013.

There is a ‘Count Your Blessings Calendar 2013’ available inside the ChristianAid Magazine.

Christian Aid Scotland Annual Review 2012 is on the Notice Board in the hall.

Please support CA in any way you can – we are always open to new ideas!

TANZANIA 2013On behalf of the Tanzania team, I would like to take the opportunity once again to thankeveryone in the church for their continued encouragement as we prepare to go to Africa inSeptember to build homes for children and widows affected by the HIV epidemic in the Moshiarea of Tanzania. There is great enthusiasm within the team, as demonstrated at the recent Vine Trust service on13 January, and there are a lot of good initiatives underway to help raise funds and awareness,a few of which are mentioned below, namely “Buy-a-brick”, “Spring into Tanzania”, “GoLightly”, “Global Awareness Challenge” and the Tanzania 2013 coffee morning in April.BUY-A-BRICKCaring for 3 younger brothers, whilst grieving the loss of your mum to AIDS before your 14thbirthday, is all too common a story in sub Saharan Africa. The pressures are immense andmade worse when the shack you are living in begins to collapse around you... Vine Trust inpartnership with local communities and NGO’s in Tanzania is trying to help by building 24 newhomes in the next 3 years for vulnerable families so that their future may be more secure andtheir life chances greatly enhanced through access to education, training and medical support.

Shirley & MarcyA mother was concerned about her kindergartenson walking to school. He didn't want his mother towalk with him. She wanted to give him the feelingthat he had some independence but yet know thathe was safe.

So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked aneighbour if she would please follow him to schoolin the mornings, staying at a distance, so heprobably wouldn't notice her. She said that sinceshe was up early with her toddler anyway, it wouldbe a good way for them to get some exercise aswell, so she agreed. The next school day, the neighbour and her little girl set out following behindTimmy as he walked to school with another neighbour girl he knew. She did thisfor the whole week.

As the two kids walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy 's littlefriend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every dayall week. Finally she said to Timmy, 'Have you noticed that lady following us toschool all week? Do you know her?'

Timmy nonchalantly replied, 'Yeah, I know who she is.'

The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?'

'That's just Shirley Goodnest, 'Timmy replied, 'and her daughter Marcy.'

'Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is she following us?

'Well,' Timmy explained, 'every night my Mum makes me say the 23rd Psalmwith my prayers, 'cos she worries about me so much. And in the Psalm, it says,' Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life', so I guess I'lljust have to get used to it!'

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and begracious unto you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

May Shirley Goodnest and Marcy be with you today and always.I know you smiled!I sure did.Pass this on and brighten someone's day!

Please pray that Shirley Goodnest & Marcy go with everyone you love!!!

Church and Society – What can I do?Poverty, economics, social issues and equality, education, international affairs, ethics inscience and medicine – these are all BIG issues so it is not surprising that often we feel, asindividuals or even as a congregation, that we are too small to make a difference. However, this is not the case. The Church and Society Council supports a number ofcampaigns and initiatives and produces information and resources to enable congregations toget involved and have a voice in response to today’s big issues and to put their faith intoaction.Based on the theme “Caring for the Earth,” here are some ideas of small things you could trythat will make a difference.

Carbon fast for LentInstead of giving up chocolate or sweet treats for Lent, why not focus on your household instead and theimpact it has on the planet?Tearfund encourages us to have a “Carbon Fast” forLent. Some simple suggestions include turning downthe heating whilst wearing more jumpers; to avoidingbuying imported food for a week; to sharing householditems like ladders and lawnmowers with neighbours, rather than buying them; to

praying for those whose lives have already been severely affected by deforestation andindustrialised agriculture. For those with internet access, you can sign up at www.tearfund/org/carbonfast and receiveweekly challenges that will make you think about how the way we live impacts upon theplanet.

Food is a Gift from God“Food is more than just fuel. It is a gift and a blessing upon which we all depend.” This

is a quote from a thought provoking leaflet resource produced by theChurch and Society Council. It highlights that “food waste is a bigproblem and Scottish households throw away over half a million tonnesof food waste every year. Wasted food is not only a waste of money andan environmental problem, it is an affront to God. The wanton disregardof the gift of food and its casual disposal should be offensive to allChristians. “If you want to do something about this problem, consider downloadingthe leaflet, “Food is a Gift from God,” from the Church and Society

Council’s website in the section “Make a difference locally.” It also contains a short biblestudy on the issue. You could also try the following things:

Measure out portion sizes (instead of guesswork) so there’s no waste Plan your meals in advance Make a list and buy only what you need Make the most of your freezer

CHRISTINE STONE -Our Mission Partner in Nepal

After a very full but encouraging two months of varied trainings, Christine wastempted to have a short break in Scotland, but decided to spend Christmas in Nepal. There she would enjoy going to the International Church and maybe the ChristmasParty for “singles and couples with no children”!January is a busy month for her – trainings in the chilly district of Dolakha about a5 hour drive North-East from Kathmandu. Then a long, English course for teachersfrom the mountainous areas who are spending the winter months in Kathmandu. As the Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC) has a staffing crisis at themoment, Christine is taking over “A” (Highers) English and GCSE (Standard) Historyso she is swotting up her 20th Century History! “No hardship!” she says.

But the winter cold is a problem with electricity cuts and a shortage of bottled gas.Coming home after a time away from home can be difficult as everything is cold and perhapsno power for another 5 or 6 hours! FOUR hot water bottles are in constant use –day and night – when she can get gas to boil a kettle on the ONE gas-ring she usuallyuses for cooking. No luxuries like central heating and electric blankets for Christine!!But she is always cheerful – well – most of the time, she says – but God is always thereto listen to her moans and she trusts in Him completely. We pray that God will be withher, guard and protect her as she continues her work for Him in Nepal.

KATHMANDU INTERNATIONAL STUDY CENTRE (KISC)KISC is a culturally diverse international school which was established in 1987, mainlyfor the children of expatriate mission families. It was originally part of a programmerun by United Mission to Nepal (UMN) and International Nepal Fellowship (INF) but moved tobeing Human Development and Community Services (HDCS) in 2005.KISC aims to provide a challenging yet supportive learning environment and operatesaccording to Christian values and Biblical truths in such a way that lives can be transformed.Their vision is to be living witnesses of Christ’s love through excellent education. They are often looking for full-time staff across a range of subjects and gap-year students arewelcome to go and work with children aged 4 – 14 years. KISC is suitable for young peoplewishing to be transformed and wanting to make a difference to the lives of other people.Teaching in KISC can be an exceptional and rewarding experience. Our Mission Partner,Christine Stone – this amazing woman – to quote an article about her – has been part of thisestablishment since its inauguration and still relishes the challenges of teaching creatively.

‘A MESSAGE FROM THE MANSE’FEBRUARY 2013

Dear FriendsIn recent weeks, on several occasions, different people have said to me that they takepride in speaking their minds. It has been described as ‘calling a spade a spade’, or whensomeone doesn’t hold back at all, ‘a spade a shovel’! However, any conversation, like anyrelationship, is a two-way street. We can say very directly what is on our minds, but if wewant to communicate with another person in a meaningful way, then they have to hearwhat we say without them being hurt by our words.

In my experience when we say something which we know is going to be difficult for theother person to hear, it is better to find a gentler way of saying it, rather than put their backsup. All of us will be able to think of occasions when we have opened our mouths andinserted both feet, wishing afterwards we had keep quiet. But similarly, we all know what itis like to be on the receiving end of harsh words – it hurts.

Once we have said something, we cannot take it back. If it is harsh or even unjust criticism, then no matter how sorry we are, or how often we apologise, even if we are forgiven, hurtcan remain like a scar. In time it may fade, but there is always some memory of spokenhurtful comments.

We must, of course, speak the truth, but the truth must be spoken in love, otherwise it is nottruth: it is revenge or a deliberate attack on another person. This is not the way God wantsus to relate to one another. In speaking about relationships within the church, the author ofthe letter to the Hebrews puts it like this:‘Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead let usencourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is comingnearer.’ Hebrews 10:25According to this verse, every time Christians meet together, whether it is on Sundays orthrough the week, we should encourage one another – and that includes how we speak toone another. So as Lent approaches, rather than giving up something to mark this time ofyear, instead let’s decide to do something much more positive. Let’s all encourage oneanother. It will make a world of difference.

Yours in Christ Jesus – Melville
