volunteering at the north shore neighbourhood house

North Shore Neighbourhood House (NSNH) has a strong tradition of volunteering for more than 75 years. As our community expands, that volunteer spirit has grown to include the John Braithwaite Community Centre (JBCC). NSNH partners in delivering social and recreation programs and services at John Braithwaite Community Centre. Today, volunteers at both locations make the North Shore a friendly and caring community. There are numerous opportunities for volunteering at both NSNH and JBCC.

Some of the many areas in which volunteers play an essential support role are listed below.

highlights I

the edible garden project The Edible Garden Project (EGP) is a program of the North Shore Neighbourhood House, and stems from the belief that everyone in the community has the right to fall in love with fresh-picked produce. With over 400 volunteers, a strong community of supporters and partners, and over 10 tonnes of food grown and donated since its inception in 2006, the Edible Garden Project contributes to a more just and sustainable food system on the North Shore.

we share EGP volunteers grow fresh local food in gardens across the North Shore for donation to many community partners, as well as the Greater Vancouver Food Bank’s Food Hub. We’ve grown over 10 tonnes of food for donation.

we farm We operate two social enterprise farms that facilitate social, environmental, economic and educational benefits for the community. They are the first step in building a plant to plate local food system on the North Shore. Loutet Farm is located at 14th & Rufus Ave., and the Sutherland Schoolyard Market Garden is located at 18th & Sutherland Ave. Check ediblegardenproject.com/calendar/ for farm gate sale hours and locations.

we teach The EGP teaches over 500 students per month about growing and preparing fresh food through our school garden program, at 4 elementary schools, and 6 child care centres. Also check out our GardenSmart workshops—we teach beginner to advanced topics : gardensmart.ca.

volunteer Join over 600 EGP volunteers—get your hands in the soil, give back to your community, meet your neighbours, and learn something new! We have volunteer positions for everyone and every schedule. For more information visit the EGP website at www.ediblegardenproject.com.
