Welcome to The Station side of the CYN Spring Programme 2015. The Station is CYN’s city centre youth hub and we are thrilled to be taking part and celebrating Bristol as Europe’s Green Capital 2015!

Over the next year our programmes will be fit to bursting with events, exhibitions, courses and sessions for young people to think, discuss and engage with the topic of sustainability in a creative and fun way. From fashion courses that encourage you to reuse, to digital projects that will inspire change for the future, even look out for changes to the venue itself.

One of the ways we’re thinking of going greener at CYN is by reducing the amount of printed programmes we create over the year. Before we stop printing completely, we want to hear from you – how would you best like to know what’s going on at CYN? We’ve created a simple online questionnaire that we would love for you to fill in. Those that fill it in will be entered into a prize draw to win theatre tickets to a suitably green themed production of ‘Alice in Wasteland’ at The Station this May.

Creative Careers is a short course that will kick start your creative career and help you develop creative skills, gain a qualification, build your confidence and provide you with a progressional route. Throughout January, the course will be working with urban fashion designer, Dutty Girl, to teach you about fashion merchandising, upcycling and styling. Your work will be featured in St Peters Hospice shop windows across Bristol.

Join the Urban Arts Space Film Making group at The Station and work with a professional film maker on a weekly basis to direct, produce, edit and screen your own films. You’ll have the chance to learn about a range of film making techniques and genres so that you can make your own film. At the end of the term the films made will have their own film screening at The Showcase.

Studio 7 is for singers, rappers and musicians who want to develop confidence and engage in live performance. We open a gateway into the music industry for you.

There is an open door policy, however there is an audition. Just turn up and we’ll do it there in the session.

Live Music is a ten week course for young musicians wanting to develop their musical skills – whether it be playing an instrument, writing lyrics or working with other musicians. The course is led by professional musicians and in The Station recording rooms. You can also achieve an Arts Award qualification just by attending.

The Fashion Fridays sessions run at The Station and are an opportunity for young designers to create, upcycle, and learn tailoring and sewing skills alongside meetingand working with industry professionals. All of which create collections of work that are shown in a fashion show at the end of term. You will also get the opportunity to complete your Bronze or Silver Arts Award.

STREET CIRCUS DANCE COMPANYCOURSE

Street Circus is a combination of Street Dance with acrobatics and free running. FUTURE CITY DRAMA COMPANYDRAMA WORKSHOP

An unnamed group of Time Travellers see the future of the land, where they encounter Recyclable City and Metal Detective Dogs – the rest of the story will be created by you, and it will place the green agenda and sustainability on a more creative and contemporary platform.

So come and flex those creative muscles, and work towards a devised performance using tools such as games, physical theatre, and storytelling. You will also get the chance to work with theatre school professionals from LAMDA to help create your show which you will then perform to an invited audience at the end of the final day.

The course is running throughout March and is being led by Josh Tucker, from Temple Records’ Youth Music Label. You will get the chance to produce music, be mentored in live music practices and see working studios, as well as working towards having your music aired or performed live. PINCH THEATRE RESIDENCYWORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES

PINCH are very excited to be Artists in Residence at The Station where they’ll be working on the second stage of their new show ‘Asking For It’ where two sets of women seek to find the best versions of themselves. At The Station you’ll be able to come and watch them in action during open rehearsals and they’ll also be holding a dance-theatre workshop on the themes of the piece. At the end of the residency PINCH will be sharing some of the things they’ve been working on; they’d love see you there. This residency is working up towards International Women’s Day on the 8th March, where elements of the work created during the residency will be shared.

Share the love of humankind at the One Love dance, an alternative valentines party for young people in Bristol. Song requests will be taken, so we are able to play tracks that remind you of those who have made a difference in your lives.

There will also be games, workshops, refreshments and much more.

Organised by young people for young people, bringing you the best music on the youth urban music scene, with special guest performances. Come along and join in the fun. If you would like to DJ or MC and are under 19 years of age then sign up to take part in DJ and MC sessions that will get you a slot on the main stage.

YOUTH RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE EXHIBITIONEXHIBITION

This year Bristol celebrates as Green Capital of the Year and here at The Station we’re asking what that means to young people. This exhibition explores the answer to the question ‘What do young people in Bristol think of climate change?’ With a range of artworks and responses from young artists, this exhibition opens our Green Capital Programme. The exhibition will be open daily with a private view on Friday 9th from 6–7pm.

CHRIS DRURYEXHIBITION

In this solo exhibition of acclaimed British Land Art by Chris Drury, The Station will be exhibiting a series of his Antarctica prints amongst others, as well as blog entries. Drury’s work focuses on natural phenomena, particularly between nature and science.

This exhibition is part of The Station programme within Bristol’s Green Capital of Europe 2015 project.

YOUNG BRISTOL EXHIBITIONEXHIBITION

The Creative Programme at Young Bristol has been working within its network of youth clubs, in secondary schools & through holiday art clubs to engage young people in high quality arts provision.

This work has been funded by a two-year Prospectus Grant from the Department for Education which has enabled Young Bristol to help young people improve their confidence, gain an Arts Award and other accreditation while improving links between community youth clubs and arts and cultural institutions in Bristol.

This exhibition will show some of the work that has been created as part of this programme with a wide- range in work including puppets, animations, printmaking & sculpture.

Creative students from University West of England will be using The Station’s gallery throughout March to curate an exhibition of their work in collaboration with Creative Youth Network. A private view for the exhibition will be taking place on Friday 6th March from 6–8pm.

The Voice is a way to feedback on The Station’s programme and discuss issues and topics that are affecting young people in Bristol today. All packed into one suitcase is a variety of digital equipment for you to use and leave us your thoughts anonymously. Equally you can become a key player in The Voice and help us collect feedback from other young people by coming along to sessions that will be taking place towards the end of the month. ‘The Voice’ suitcase will be attending various events and activities at The Station. Why not book a session and have your Voice heard about things that matter to you as a young person.

The new BYL Youth Forum group will include a BME group who will discuss issues affecting Black, Minority Ethnic young people and take actions to influence changes. The sessions will also allow discussion around personal safety, activities, local services and community cohesion. We believe in bringing young people together to have a voice, influence decisions, debate on issues, plan events and advocate on behalf of other young people.

Sports Hub will be celebrating the beginning of Green Capital year in style! Check out the new ‘Urban Movement’ programme, which will run throughout 2015 and explore different ways of moving around this city. Expect specialist workshops in skating, parkour, cycling, and running - all led by industry professionals. January will begin with the ‘walk these streets’ programme merging practical self-defence and fitness training. Spaces may be limited as this course will end with a certificate so pop-in soon to sign up! All this will be running alongside our standard activities in the sports hall which include table-tennis, badminton and a Nintendo Wii projected onto our HUGE screen!

We provide healthy refreshments at all sessions.Please wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear. Book onto one of the specialist courses by dropping into one of the sessions on a Thursday.

FRIDAY’S THE CHILLYOUTH GROUP

At our Friday’s Chill session you will have the opportunity to use a wide range of creative expressive arts from photography to music and even get to use The Station’s multi-media suite to edit and create. During February and March we will be running a Big Eco Art project with local artist Charlotte Chapman and Carol Sherman, which will inspire you to make work that will be shown in the gallery in April. The Crush, We are Bristol and The Voice will be part of these sessions.

We Are Bristol: Revamped and coming at you bigger and better than before! We will be kicking off this opportunity to have your voice heard, share yours and others’ stories about being a young person in Bristol today. Take part in a variety of media workshops with us and learn everything you need to know about becoming a Big Live News Reporter. In partnership with ITV Fixers, this CYN Youth News platform will report on real issues and will be published online. We Are Bristol is launching on 30th January at The Station from 6.30–9pm.

The Drop continues to drop it hard and brings you dynamic vibrant flavourz to keep you entertained on your Saturdays nights. With monthly open mic night, music request night, film night as well as DJ night and skill sessions – which will give you an opportunity to get a set at THE CLASH, quarterly youth party.

As well as this we will be bringing you the opportunity to work with some of the best professional Urban musicians, spoken word and rap artists.

Cameron: What is Green Capital and what does it mean?

Emma: Every year a city in Europe is awarded and commissioned as the green capital of the year and in 2015 it’s Bristol. It’s the first time a city in the UK has been awarded it, so it’s very exciting. The city doesn’t have to be the greenest to start with but it does have to show a high interest in making changes to become greener. Bristol Green Capital 2015 is making projects happen, which for Bristol means that we as a city will be watched across Europe. Locally it means that we have a real chance to make a difference. There are going to be some really exciting projects happening over the year!

CJ: Ok, so how does it work?

EW: There are three major grant schemes available for organisations across Bristol to apply for. They will allow people to be able to run projects in communities around green issues. There is also a Big Arts Council England led programme of arts happening across the city with international, national and local artists

taking part. There are events happening such as the Youth Summit taking place at The Station in April, that will invite young people to get involved in the debate. Look out for ShaunThe Sheep across the city too as he’s getting involved. The role that Bristol Green Capital 2015 are playing is to provide the stage for everybody to then use it – it’s everyone’s stage. I’m running projects in neighbourhoods across the city to help people find out more about green issues and how it affects them.

CJ: What good is it going to do?

EW: Well the projects and events will be taking place throughout the whole of next year and through this partnerships will be made for organisations and individuals to make a pledge to become greener. The important stuff will

happen after 2015 when we will hopefully be greener and all the good work will remain.

CJ: It’s getting people to get out of their normal cycle to recycle! Sounds great. How can young people get involved?

EW: They can get involved in their local neighbourhood arts programmes, by coming to the Youth Summit or by volunteering – we’re organising a big volunteering programme just like the one for the London 2012 Olympics. We’re looking for people to welcome others to the city, volunteer on events and become champions for the projects. Watch this space as there will be loads of ways to get involved, have their say and make a change, which is what it is all about.

CJ: If young people have ideas how can Green Capital help, and is there funding to help them?

EW: Green Capital 2015 is open to what people want to do and getting young people involved would be great! What they need to do is partner with an organisation like CYN who can help them make their project happen. Bristol Youth Summit is also the perfect opportunity for young people to voice their opinions and ideas at.

CJ: That’s really exciting. It’s all about helping the next generation make change. That’s great thanks Emma.

Cameron: Hi Sandy, tell me, what’s CYN doing to help?

Sandy: There are 3 parts to what CYN are doing. In no particular order, we’ve raised money to develop the courtyard site at The Station following on from young people’s feedback on how to make the space greener with planters, edible food and art installations. We’ve also started a group for young people to join, that is leading up to the Youth Summit at The Station in April. The group are helping to plan and organise the whole event. Thirdly, CYN is making 5 pledges to become greener. They are – to theme all of our delivery at youth clubs and in projects with green themes, to get 2015 young people to sign a pledge to be greener, we’re

cutting down our use of paper by a third, we’re working towards an online programme rather than a printed programme and we will also hopefully be painting the iconic doors at The Station green to visually represent our commitment to becoming greener.

CJ: As an organisation how is CYN working with Bristol Green Capital 2015?’

SH-R: The Youth Summit is the biggest thing we’re working on at the moment in partnership with them. It will include ideas and opinions from young people and also present some ideas that have already been suggested, such as one idea from a young person about using local ingredients to make KFC style chicken to reduce transport for ingredients.

CJ: Brilliant, that’s a great idea. So, how can CYN help young people make a change and get involved?

SH-R: The courtyard development is using young people’s ideas already so young people are already involved. For those that want to get involved they should come along to any of the CYN youth clubs or projects which are running throughout the year and can be found in our programme. We’re keen to get young people involved to challenge themselves and learn about actions they can take to be greener.

CJ: You’re helping young people build their knowledge about environmental issues. Many thanks to you both for your time. I came to the interviews not knowing much about Bristol Green Capital 2015 and now I am excited to be a part of the activities planned in the coming year.

Welcome to CYN’s Spring Programme 2015! This is the first programme of the New Year, and so first things first, Happy New Year! Here’s to 2015, the year Bristol is Europe’s Green Capital of the year!

Over the next year CYN will be committed to delivering projects and a programme that encourages the communities of Bristol to think about global warming and sustainability. We personally will be doing all we can over the next year to make our organisation greener and we invite you to do the same in your homes, schools and youth clubs. We will be working with artists to run courses, projects and events that are themed on being green, from upcycling and reducing waste, to producing your own food and living locally. We hope you’ll join us on this year of Green!

One of the ways we’re thinking of going greener at CYN is by reducing the amount of printed programmes we create over the year. If you have ever thought you might like to act in the movies – then this could be just the event for you. Wildseed Studios is a Bristol based production company looking for young people to attend an open workshop audition for two forthcoming feature film and web productions. One is a horror movie about modern day witches and the other a comedy series – both are going to be set in Bristol.

The first day will be a series of acting exercises. It will be really good fun and, even if you don’t get picked, there is no doubt you will learn something about acting too!

If you do get picked, you will be asked to come to the second day and be part of a small group who will be asked to try out for some of the actual parts. There are limited places for this event, so pleased do sign up.

Join us for an exhibition of art and photography at the Kingswood Estate. The work being exhibited has been created by young people that took part in the Urban Arts Space Photography and Urban Art courses led by CYN throughout the Autumn/ Winter term. The work focuses on and explores the theme of ‘Identity and Equality’.

This is an exciting, creative project for young people leaving custody and care leavers. Future 4 Me works with young people to develop plans so you can progress towards increasing levels of independence as well as giving you access to positive activities which includes 1:1 sessions with arts, music, dance tutors, plus many more. Creative Youth Network are a consortium organisation delivering this project which is managed by 1625 Independent People. We deliver the positive activities that take place around the arts, providing outstanding 1:1 mentoring/tutoring with creative professionals.

Come down to Hillfields Youth Club, hang out with friends and have fun. Hillfields Youth Club has its own BMX track, sports hall and kitchen – so plenty of things to do, but if that doesn’t take your fancy, you can just chill out and listen to some tunes. Monday nights are for those aged 13 –19, Wednesdays are for 8–13 year olds and Thursday night, which is our weekly project night where we’ll be working on creative projects, are for those aged 8 –16.

Kingsway Youth Club is back! This time it’s at the Kingswood Estate and we’re raring to go with activities, opportunities for young people in the Kingswood area and providing space for young people to meet up and hang out with trained youth workers. Sessions will be fun, relaxed and open to all.

Hanham Youth Club is a lively and fun youth club with young people taking part in fantastic activities each week. Come and meet new friends, get competitive in the indoor sports hall, learn cooking skills in the large kitchen or get creative in regular activities. Monday nights are for Year 9+ ages, Tuesdays are for Year 8s, Wednesday is for Year 7s and Thursday is for Years 9 and over.

Every Monday at The Stokes Youth Club is project night, so come along and get involved in arts and music or sports projects in our amazing youth club space which includes music recording facilities, sports hall and kitchen. Then on Thursday and Friday come along with friends, meet others and chill out in our youth club evenings where there will be chances to get involved in debates, activities and much more.
