Highlights of April Meeting

Mark Steele welcomed members and guests on Apr. 6. Bob Davenport led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mark announced that the recommended changes to the Club Operating Guidelines have been approved. He also reminded members that next meeting election of new officers for 2015/2016 will be held.

Our featured speaker was Michael McCollum, science fiction writer and Chief Engineer, valve product line at Honeywell Tempe. His topic: “The Arty of Matching Propulsion to Plot.”

So what is science fiction? – Literature about the future? – literature of speculation? – literature about science? – what editors are actually buying? Science fiction is alike all fiction – as story of “What If”.

The 1st science fiction story was written in

1803 by Mary Shelley and titled “Franken-stein”.

Science fiction can have a variety of fla-vors: High tech; cautionary tales (“On the Beach”); social commentary (“Gulliver’s Travels”); space opera (“Star Wars”) and fantasy. Whatever flavor, all science fiction is about people. However science fiction has special problems as the author must create a coherent environment without in-consistencies within which the story takes place.

Science fiction always starts with a clean slate. At least 25% of the words must be descriptive in support of the environment, but everything must be subordinate to the plot:

Machinery must support the basic situation

Interplanetary civilizations require spaceships

Spaceships require propulsion

Propulsion systems must be neither too good or too poor for the plot

All forms of spacecraft propulsion yet dis-covered are reaction drives (since there is no friction in space to enable a propulsion sys-tem like a car). Therefore, to move forward a spacecraft must eject something out the back (i.e. Newton’s Law).

At this point Mike discusses various types of reaction drive propulsion systems together with the ability of these systems to accom-plish interplanetary objectives. His point was that even if, as a writer, you cannot de-scribe the technical workings of your propul-sion system, it as a minimum must appear plausible and capable of meeting your plot objectives (ref: Star Trek dilithium crystal propulsion).

So can a science fiction writer avoid all tech-nical mistakes in his or her story? No – but he must do the best that he can but he must never:

Allow errors to intrude on the story Cause ‘willing suspension of disbe-

lief” of the reader to occur Draw attention to the act of reading

Michael is the author of 10 science fiction novels and one book of short stories, with to-tal sales of 250,000 books in bookstores. He is also the proprietor of Sci Fi - Arizona, an Online Science Fiction bookstores and pub-lishing company. http://www.scifi-az.com/

With our revised club guidelines that will change the roles and increase the number of Board Members, we are again encouraging members to attend Board Meetings as a guest to influence and support Club poli-cies.

Board Meetings are held immediately prior to our meetings on the 1

st Wednesday of the

month at an offsite location.

If you are interested in attending a Board Meeting, please contact anyone on our list of Directors on page 9.

My boss said “Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have.”

Now I’m sitting in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

I’m pleased to announce that we had a good response and vote on our recommended

changes to the Club’s Operating Instructions. Statistics tell us that we could expect

about a 9% response on any type of email question. We received 60 votes versus a

mailing of 519 emails representing an 11.56% response. Good.

I’m also pleased to let you know that the change motion was carried, 59 to 1.

However … I hope this disturbs you as much as it disturbs me … We have been search-

ing for a Vice Presidential candidate to replace Mark Steele who is moving into the

President’s slot in June. The Vice President is a vital cog in this organization and we

haven’t been able to find one of you to step up and help. I believe we, the Board, have

not been trying hard enough to find someone. This includes me. So, I’m hoping once

again that someone will read this and step forward. I know there are plenty of quality

folks out there who can help. Please contact anyone on the Board and let them know

you are interested.

And … I’m really distressed that we had to cancel our Spring Roundup Picnic this year.

Stu Mitnik tells me that 545 members (out of 615, total) live within 25 miles of our pic-

nic location, yet only 21 signed up. This I think is likely a message that the picnic is no

longer serving as a fun get-together for the large majority of you. How about letting

me know what we can do as a club to gain your interest in participating in such

events. As always, you can send your ideas and comments to me at

[email protected].

The next two years should be good, growing years with Mark Steele leading us. We will

appreciate his insightfulness and energy. I’m looking forward to working with Mark

on the Board.

Best to all.

Ed

Alan Baer, a lung transplant recipient, would like to announce the Lung Transplant Sup-port Organization 7

Monthly Charity News

Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund and the other $100 to local charities as usual. This month’s charitable donation went to Child Crisis Center East Valley. Club guidelines dictate that we support local charities exclu-sively. A list of the charities from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

50/50 winners were Ray Czerwonka and Alan Baer.

Editor’s Corner

We apologize to those of you who received the newsletter via USPS late. We were late get-ting the newsletter to Repro but something else happened that resulted in the late delivery. We will endeavor to get the newsletter to print earlier and avoid the other events that oc-curred.

The Board has reviewed the response to this year’s dues notices and although working well, we have decided to further improve the process. Beginning in August 2016, dues notices will be sent in a letter separate from Cliff Notes. This letter, sent to both winter and summer addresses, will include dues owed and an opportunity to contribute to the Scholarship Program, although dues and scholarship contributions will need to be sep-arate checks. We will ask you to mail the entire letter back to us with requested infor-mation updates and roster requests. We thank you for your support of our process improvements.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

The history of Honeywell or an old edition of the Newsletter can be found on the GRC webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/

If there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, or if you want to comment on the Newsletter itself, write a letter to the editor or e-mail the information to [email protected]! We will publish it, space available and the approval of the Board. Any comments or claims made within the publication are solely the responsibility of the individ-ual authors and do not necessarily express the views of Honeywell Inc. or the Directors, Of-ficers, Staff or members of the Garrett Retirees’ Club of Arizona.

work on projects such as nanoparticle drug delivery for currently incurable diseases like can-cer and thin-film synthesis for electronics and energy storage.

Admitted into the summer research program at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana). Jonathan presented his research project: protein adsorption to gold nanoparticles, improving the knowledge base for targeted drug delivery using gold nanoparticles.

Jonathan is the treasurer of a student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) which is focused on providing professional development to chemical engineering students and performing community outreach.

In April the club will host the AIChE Southwest regional conference where students from nearby universities come to receive profession development, socialize with other chemical engineering students and participate in two main competitions: Chem Car competition involv-ing creating a miniature car powered solely by a chemical reaction; and a research paper competition where students present findings on research projects and judges give a financial reward to the best presentation.

Jonathan shared the following, “I truly appreciate the generosity of this foundation over the last three years. There is no way I would be where I am today without the financial support you have given me. Thank you again for your generosity.”

The Scholarship Team wants to congratulate Danielle for her hard work. She will complete

her undergraduate degree in less than four years—great job Danielle. Danielle’s grand-

mother, Dawn Orgill is especially proud of her, and all that she has accomplished in such a

short time.

GETTING OLDER

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office. "Is it true," she wanted

to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of

my life?"

"Yes, I'm afraid so,” the doctor told her.

There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, "I'm wondering,

then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS'."

Washington thinks they are going to take away our guns, so check this out. I like it!

NAIL GUNS! AND, you don't even have to REGISTER them or have LICENSES for them! AND, you don't have to worry about them being CONCEALED!

Just a LOT of good stuff to do with THIS!

Once in a while something so totally cool comes out that even a guy who doesn't normally even know what he'd like for Father's Day or Christmas would immediately ask for it:

Thank you, DeWalt!!!

New Nail Gun, made by DeWalt. It can drive a 16-D nail through a 2x4 at 200 yards.

This makes construction a breeze, you can sit in your lawn chair and build a fence.

Hundred round magazine.

Someone invades your home, just nail their ass.

I replaced my alarm system!

New alarm system! Live Safe and Save You Money.

I’ve disconnected my ADT home alarm system and unregistered from the Neighborhood Watch.

I've got two Pakistani flags raised in the front yard, one at each corner, and the black flag of ISIS in the center.

The local Police, Sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Secret Service and other agencies are all watching the house 24/7.

I've never felt more safe and I'm saving $49.95 a month.
