Time for a new beginning. For getting away from it all, leaving your past behind. Making a fresh start. Making it big. These dreams are what drama is made of. Mountview’s spring season presents four shows with these hopes at their heart. But in very different ways…

The season begins with Mountview’s Acting students in a specially-commissioned work by Tim Luscombe. Kimalia is a hard-hitting exploration of race, gender and nationality seen through the hopes and fears of an asylum seeker and the conflicts he faces. Spend Spend Spend is the real-life fairy tale of Yorkshire housewife Viv Nicholson who in 1961 hit it big on the pools. The musical charts Viv’s journey from hair rollers to high roller and back again.

Musical Theatre students present two classic American musicals. Anything Goes sees a Wall Street broker, a nightclub singer, a gangster and an English aristocrat heading for a new start aboard a passenger liner. In Guys and Dolls, gambler Nathan Detroit needs a big win to make a new start while his fiancée Miss Adelaide dreams of finally getting him down the aisle. With a casual bet the worlds of sinners and Salvation Army collide in this musical postcard from Broadway.

What would you do if you won the pools? In 1961 Viv Nicholson won £152,319 (£5 million in today’s money) and announced she was going to “spend, spend, spend”.

Her new-found riches brought her minks, Mercedes and five marriages. Her youth, glamorous good looks and unabashed spending had the press hooked and they followed her every move. But the parties and the taxman took their toll and Viv was left penniless, back on the cobbled streets on which she grew up.

Spend Spend Spend charts this roller coaster of a life in the glorious Technicolor of the 60s. The original production starred Barbara Dixon and won the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Musical and was nominated for seven Olivier Awards.

Asylum claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity have been recognised in the UK since 1999. However, having the right to seek refugee status and actually gaining asylum on this basis, have proved to be two very different things.

Through shocking comedy and hard-hitting raw conflict, Kimalia pitches Ade, a Kimali refugee, against Vincent, a border guard with a prejudice.

Kimalia has been written specifically for a cast of graduating students as part of the ‘Made at Mountview’ programme of new work.

This urgent, contemporary tale exposes prejudice at the heart of the Home Office’s immigration strategy, and aims to question all of our attitudes to race, gender and nationality.

Based on real life testimonies, this play contains explicit language and scenes that may shock. It is unsuitable for audiences under 16.

* Writer Tim Luscombe will discuss the play and the issues it confronts. Free for ticket holders.

A fairy tale of New York.

All that Hot Box singer Miss Adelaide wants is to finally get married but her fiancé of 14 years, Nathan Detroit, has bigger worries. America’s lowest low-lifes are in town and want to bet big but can he find a joint for the game? Meanwhile laid-back gambler Sky Masterson accepts a wager to take Salvation Army missionary Sarah Brown on a date.

Everyone gets more than they bet for in this classic show. The snappiest of lyrics and tunes that are easier to catch than Adelaide’s cold, including Take Back Your Mink, Luck Be A Lady and the barn-storming Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat have made Guys and Dolls one of Broadway’s best-loved musicals.

A champagne cocktail of unforgettable songs and one in the eye for the Great Depression, Anything Goes trumpeted the start of the Golden Age of Broadway.

Hit after Cole Porter hit including Anything Goes, You’re the Top and I Get a Kick Out of You keep the madcap farce aboard SS America afloat. Evangelist turned nightclub singer Reno Sweeney helps stowaway Billy Crocker start a new life and win the heart of heiress Hope Harcourt. Hope’s domineering matriarch and a second-rate gangster and his moll disguised as a minister and missionary add to the classic Wodehouse caper.

The winning combination of unforgettable tunes and carefree plot have inspired two films, a TV adaptation and countless revivals both on Broadway and around the world.
