SPRING SHORT COURSE GUIDESeptember 2016 – January 2017

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF CENTRE FOR ADULT EDUCATION AND BOX HILL INSTITUTEIt’s time to rise from the winter slumber and take advantage of a spring season that’s blossoming with possibilities. At the Centre for Adult Education (CAE), our short courses are a great way to dip your toe into that hobby you’ve always taken an interest in, to get out and meet people with interests like yours, or to explore new parts of Melbourne.

In the spirit of the season, we want to provide you with opportunities to grow and flourish. That’s why we’ve introduced new short courses across a wide range of areas, from maintaining a healthy work-life balance to writing a synopsis and even exploring vegan cooking. We are also starting two great new walking tours that will explore Melbourne’s CBD, taking advantage of everything our beautiful city has to offer.

We are proud of our spring offerings and we look forward to helping you to bloom!

Norman Gray AM CEO of Centre for Adult Education and Box Hill Institute

A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR TRAINING AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE Spring Short Course Guide.

The Victorian Government is building the Education State – boosting access to education for all Victorians so they can get the jobs they want whilst securing our state’s economic and social future.

There are lots of exciting happenings at the CAE this year, including the opening of the Victorian Government Skills and Jobs Centre and new courses starting at the Lilydale Lakeside Campus.

It may be hard to believe, but the CAE has been providing interesting courses for Victorians for nearly 70 years. It has been a bastion of local learning for adults and young adults alike, shaping the cultural and educational landscape of Melbourne and its surrounds.

As a Learn Local provider, the CAE has always advocated for those who love learning and want to continually challenge themselves, by developing new and innovative courses that reflect the community’s interests.

Some of CAE’s students have been doing courses with the CAE for over 50 years, enjoying the social benefits and mental stimulation that learning provides to individuals and the community. Continual learning opens the mind, helps us adapt to change, enriches lives and keeps minds agile. It is an important part of a well-functioning and skilled society.

The Victorian Government is proud to support the CAE in its constant endeavours to develop unique learning opportunities for Victorians from all walks of life.

With hundreds of short courses to consider, ranging from vocational training and recreational learning to an extensive catalogue of languages, I encourage you to explore what’s on offer in this guide and open yourself to new and exciting opportunities at the CAE.

The Hon. Steve Herbert, MP Minister for Training and Skills

Maryna TsikhanenkaCAE LANGUAGE TEACHER

1. Tell us a little about your teaching philosophy and experience:

I believe in constant learning together with my students and leading them by example, sharing with them the challenges that I came across while learning foreign languages. I always try to offer different strategies and techniques, so that everyone can find something that will work for them.My focus is to help students understand the basic mechanics of the language, because after learning the building blocks, they can easily create their own sentences and express whatever idea they want. This is my teaching philosophy, that I have worked out during the 10 years of my teaching experience.

2. What do you teach at the CAE and how long have you been with us?

I teach Mandarin and Russian at the CAE, and have been here for about 18 months.

3. What do you like most about teaching at the CAE?

Great atmosphere, full support and encouragement from the Coordinators, responsive and motivated students, good facilities, space for creativity.

4. Why do you think the CAE is such an important part of the Melbourne community?

Located in the most vibrant part of the CBD, CAE has absorbed the spirit of multiculturalism, freedom, positive energy and orientation for progressive future. Everyone can choose something either for hobby or job in the pallet of the CAE courses.

5. How many languages do you speak?I speak four languages fluently and two more on a very basic level, which I intend to improve through doing a CAE course. (When I have free time, which is a bit hard now, with teaching three nights a week).

6. What’s your top tip for learning a language?Be bold, and try practicing a language from the very first day, even if it is separate words and word combinations at first. Make some funny associations with new words in your native language, especially difficult ones, create stories – that’s the best way to make them a part of your experience and put into your long-term memory box.

7. Do you ever get confused and end up conversing in multiple languages at the same time?

I do occasionally. When I just started teaching in Australia, I had to constantly switch the 3 channels: Russian, Mandarin and English, and, for example, sometimes at Mandarin class I could say “Da”, which means “Yes” in Russian and “Big” in Mandarin, and then I realised that, I would correct myself.

8. What’s the most embarrassing language error you’ve ever made and what happened?

It was when I just started learning Mandarin. I was travelling to China by airplane with AirChina, and I wanted to practice my Mandarin as much as I could. So I wanted a flight attendant to bring me a pillow, but I forgot the word in Chinese, and simply said “wo yao shui jiao”, which means “I want to sleep”. However, I actually said this with the wrong tones and… the air hostess brought me some dumplings instead.

9. What super power would you choose if you could choose one?

Time travelling. You have an opportunity to meet many famous people from the past and ask them all the questions that you want.

10. The best coffee in Melbourne can be found at…?

I sincerely think that Melbourne has the best coffee in the world that I have ever tried, among my favourite places is Brunetti, which isn’t far from CAE at Swanston Street.

11. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I want to thank the Languages Centre of Excellence Team, for the opportunity to teach Russian and Chinese. You are a great team, and also special thanks for your tasty treats.,

“I believe in constant learning together with my students and leading them by example”

The Bayeux Tapestry The famous Bayeux Tapestry has been the source of much speculation and controversy. It's thought the tapestry originated in the 11thC and was commissioned by Bayeux's,Bishop Odo, half-brother of William the Conqueror while French legend argues for Queen Matilda, William's wife. Others speculate its embroidery originated in Kent, England. Regardless, at an imposing 70 metres long, its figures and inscriptions are a representation of the historic conquest of England. And, in reality, it's not a tapestry at all but an embroidery, stitched not woven.
