Summer School: The Chinese Dream

Anthropological Approaches to UnderstandingContemporary ChinaPresident Xi Jinping’s slogan ‘the Chinese dream’ seems to evoke itsAmerican equivalent. Continued economic growth and upward socialmobility are key to his vision but it is also used to refer to manyother issues. This course sheds light on the relationship betweenstate rhetoric and actual social practice as it explores the quandaries, hopes and desires of Chinese citizens, including the mismatchbetween dreams and the sometimes daunting race for success amidstlimited possibilities.
