Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Light-weight Eco-compositesMiao Guo‘s PhD thesis provides scientific insights into the environmental issues related to biocom-posites based on starch-polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) blends. The author contributes significantly to the methodological issues underlying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modelling approach. As well as presenting complete LCA inventories using primary data from a variety of sources, Guo develops a new modelling approach incorporat-ing the process-oriented biogeochemistry model Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC) into site-specific LCA studies to simulate carbon and nitrogen dynamics in the wheat agro-ecosystem. This thesis addresses important LCA data qual-ity issues by using comprehensive sensitivity and uncertainty analyses and has resulted in a large number of publications in internationally renowned journals.

New Frontiers in PhotochromismPhotochromism is the reversible phototransfor-mation of a chemical species between two forms having different absorption spectra. During the phototransformation not only the absorption spectra but also various physicochemical proper-ties change, such as the refractive index, dielectric constant, oxidation/reduction potential, and geometrical structure. The property changes can be applied to photonic equipment such as erasable memory media, photo-optical switch components, and display devices. This book compiles the ac-complishments of the research project titled “New Frontiers in Photochromism” supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.

Mathematics of Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy LogicThis book presents a mathematically-based introduction into the fascinating topic of Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic and might be used as textbook at both undergraduate and graduate levels and also as reference guide for mathemati-cian, scientists or engineers who would like to get an insight into Fuzzy Logic. Fuzzy Sets have been introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in 1965 and since then, they have been used in many applications. As a consequence, there is a vast literature on the practical applications of fuzzy sets, while theory has a more modest coverage. The main purpose of the present book is to reduce this gap by providing a theoretical introduction into Fuzzy Sets based on Mathematical Analysis and Approximation Theory. Well-known applications, as for example fuzzy control, are also discussed in this book and placed on new ground, a theoretical foundation.

Strategic Planning Decisions in the High Tech IndustryThe scale and complexity of research and practices of open innovation mandate a correspondingly sophisticated form of decision making. Strategic Planning Decisions brings together a number of tools that ease the decision process in tech-nology companies, providing both conceptual frameworks and practical applications. Innovative approaches are presented such as an ontology-based model where all the relevant aspects of a potential technology are interrelated to provide a comprehensive and logically connected data pool for decision makers. Divided into two sections, Strategic Planning Decisions describe both strate-gic approaches using the decision tools, and tacti-cal approaches. Some of these tools are expanded while some others are embedded in a model that will lay the ground for practical application.

Analytical Methods in Rotor DynamicsSecond Edition

The design and construction of rotating machinery operating at supercritical speeds was, in the 1920s, an event of revolutionary importance for the then new branch of dynamics known as rotor dynam-ics. In the 1960s, another revolution occurred: In less than a decade, imposed by operational and economic needs, an increase in the power of tur-bomachinery by one order of magnitude took place. Dynamic analysis of complex rotor forms became a necessity, while the importance of approximate methods for dynamic analysis was stressed. Finally, the emergence of fracture mechanics, as a new branch of applied mechanics, provided analytical tools to investigate crack influence on the dynamic behavior of rotors. The scope of this book is based on all these developments.

Linear Models in the Mathematics of UncertaintyThe purpose of this book is to present new mathematical techniques for modeling global issues. These mathematical techniques are used to determine linear equations between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables in cases where standard techniques such as linear regression are not suitable. In this book, we exam-ine cases where the number of data points is small (effects of nuclear warfare), where the experiment is not repeatable (the breakup of the former Soviet Union), and where the data is derived from expert opinion (how conservative is a political party). In all these cases the data  is difficult to measure and an assumption of randomness and/or statistical validity is questionable.

Topological Derivative in Shape optimizationMachine Learning in Social Media

The topological derivative is defined as the first term (correction) of the asymptotic expansion of a given shape functional with respect to a small parameter that measures the size of singular domain perturbations, such as holes, inclusions, defects, source-terms and cracks. Over the last de-cade, topological asymptotic analysis has become a broad, rich and fascinating research area from both theoretical and numerical standpoints. It has applications in many different fields such as shape and topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing and mechanical modeling including synthesis and/or optimal design of microstructures, fracture mechanics sensitivity analysis and damage evolution modeling.

Steelsfrom materials science to structural engineering

Steels and computer-based modelling are fast growing fields in materials science as well as structural engineering, demonstrated by the large amount of recent literature. Steels: from materi-als science to structural engineering combines steels research and model development, including the application of modelling techniques in steels.  The latest research includes structural engineer-ing modelling, and novel, prototype alloy steels such as heat-resistant steel, nitride-strengthened ferritic/martensitic steel and low nickel marag-ing steel. Researchers studying steels will find the topics vital to their work.  Materials experts will be able to learn about steels used in structural engineering as well as modelling and apply this increasingly important technique in their steel materials research and development.

optical Waveguide TheoryLight-induced fibres: light guiding light When the refractive index changes with the intensity of light, a number of interesting nonlinear phenomena can occur. In this chapter, we concentrate on „power-ful“ nonlinear situations, when light guides itself in a homogenous medium without any interven-ing core-cladding structure. In other words, light itself induces its own guiding structure. This fasci-nating phenomena has been studied theoretically with many confirming experiments. Light guiding light offers a multitude of devices wherein light becomes the master of its own destiny and allows for the possibility of rewritable circuitry. There are various approaches for describing highly nonlin-ear phenomena like self-induced waveguides. One is formal and lacks intuition. This approach is to solve Maxwell‘s equations from the outset with an intensity-dependent refractive index, completely ignoring the physics of the earlier chapters.

Dimension-based Quality Modeling of Transmitted SpeechIn this book, speech transmission quality is modeled on the basis of perceptual dimensions. The author presents a new analytical assessment method that allows the dimensions to be rated by non-expert listeners in a direct way. Due to the efficiency of the test method, a relatively large number of stimuli can be assessed in auditory tests. The test method is applied in two auditory experiments. The book gives the evidence that this test method provides meaningful and reliable results. The resulting dimension scores together with respective overall quality ratings form the basis for a new parametric model for the quality estimation of transmitted speech based on the perceptual dimensions. In a two-step model ap-proach, instrumental dimension models estimate dimension impairment factors in a first step.

Analysis of the orbital motion of the Earth, the Moon and other planets and their satellites led to the discovery that all bodies in the Solar System are moving with the first cosmic velocity of their proto parents. The mean orbital velocity of each planet is equal to the first cosmic velocity of the Protosun, the radius of which is equal to the semi-major axis of the planet’s orbit. The same applies for the planets’ satellites.  All the small planets, comets, other bodies and the Sun itself follow this law, a finding that has also been proven by astro-nomical observations. The theoretical solutions based on the Jacobi dynamics explain the process of the system creation and decay, as well as the nature of Kepler’s laws.

Non-Universal Superconducting Gap Structure in Iron-Pnictides Revealed by Magnetic Penetration Depth MeasurementsThe Author has revealed that the superconducting gap structure in the iron-based superconductors, which exhibit high transition temperature super-conductivity up to 55 K, depends on the detailed electronic structure via high-precision magnetic penetration depth measurements. The magnetic penetration depth is a powerful probe to elucidate the superconducting gap structure, particularly the presence or absence of nodes. So far, various theories have been proposed for the pairing symmetry, and have made specific predictions of the location of nodes in certain iron-pnictide superconductors.

Advanced Statistical Methods for Astrophysical Probes of CosmologyThis thesis explores advanced Bayesian statisti-cal methods for extracting key information for cosmological model selection, parameter inference and forecasting from astrophysical observations. Bayesian model selection provides a measure of how good models in a set are relative to each other - but what if the best model is missing and not included in the set? Bayesian Doubt is an ap-proach which addresses this problem and seeks to deliver an absolute rather than a relative measure of how good a model is. Supernovae type Ia were the first astrophysical observations to indicate the late time acceleration of the Universe - this work presents a detailed Bayesian Hierarchical Model to infer the cosmological parameters (in particular dark energy) from observations of these superno-vae type Ia.

Impact Craters in the Solar SystemPlanetary surfaces throughout the Solar System, and the current interest in impacts on the Earth, attest to the importance of impact cratering as a geological process. Impact craters have been identified on all but one of the planetary surfaces we have explored. The authors document the wide variety of crater types that have been observed on the planetary surfaces explored to date, approach-ing the subject in the context of comparative planetology. Each chapter focusses on a specific crater morphology and discusses what the craters tell us about the surfaces of bodies on which they are found. This approach illustrates not only impact craters themselves, but also emphasizes similarities and differences in crater morphology throughout the Solar System and the implications thereof.
