The show covered lots of occasions when children may feel anxious, including getting lost, barking dogs and of course stranger danger. However, the emphasis was to talk to a trusted adult or to ask for help from a trusted adult, like a Safety House. As a society we do tend to emphasise the stranger danger factor but of course there are other situations where children may be anxious or uncomfortable, the barking dog in the show being a good example. In fact, the statistics tell us that there are no more instances of abduction than there were in the 70’s but of course now we get to hear of them and also that in somewhere around 80% of cases it is a family member or friend involved. The ideal would be a balance between children being aware of dangerous situations but also not being afraid to talk to adults in everyday situations. Our P&C are currently looking for a new Safety House representative and safety houses. If you are able to help, or would like more information, please contact our P&C President, Shane Rayfield. SCIENCE WEEK There have been lots of special activities happening this week around the school to celebrate Science Week. One big event has been our Junk Bug competition. Well done to all the students for their effort and creativity. Please see overleaf for details of the exhibition on tomorrow and Friday. FATHERS’ DAY STARLIGHT NIGHT Last Friday evening our Early Childhood Centre was a hive of activity as the students brought their dads along to have a very entertaining and revealing dads’ (and others’) night. We had a dinosaur torch hunt, with sound effects, and a “My Dad’ session. Thanks to all the dads who came along and a special thanks to Amy Nelson and Whitney Jolley for their organisational skills. I’m sure that everyone had a great evening. Please see over for a few pictures from the evening. OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY This Thursday we will be joining in a National program which highlights the value of outdoor play. All our classes will be spending some time outdoors learning from and in the environment. WEBINAR Next Tuesday we have another Webinar for our years 3-6 on Cyber Safety. This week we had a presentation from the Safety House Team which was very entertaining and carried quite a few messages.

Some of the students in year four are participating in a lunch time craft group. We rotate week to week; every second Monday the group focuses on friendship concepts, the next Monday the students get to construct a craft item. The students are enjoying the group and it’s a lovely way to bring the students together to form friendships, bond and learn the social aspects of friendships and peer relationships. In the photo the students made a forgiving heart. On the heart were pieces of paper for them to write on if someone had done something to upset them. The concept of the forgiving heart was for them to rip up the piece of paper and forgive the person for upsetting them. On the heart were reasons and suggestions to do this, and a sentence saying: remember, forgiving does not depend on your feelings, it is something you decide to do.

There has been a strong emphasis on girl friendships so I wanted to include a link for you to read regarding boy friendships. A passage from this text resonates with me and I felt it would be a good website to share. “Some of the research into the high suicide rates of men between 40 and 44 years of age is suggesting that isolation from friends and profound loneliness is a contributing factor. This suggests that some men have struggled making, maintaining and nurturing friendships and in particular with other men.” If you can find the time I suggest you read this article. Maggie Dent has some wonderful tips on raising children and there are many links on this site about many different topics. https://www.maggiedent.com/blog/fragile-boys-friendships-and-why-they-matter-so-much/
