THE MAIDS BY JEAN GENET IN A TRANSLATION BY MARTIN CRIMP

Two maids and their mistress: three women locked in a repetitive and abusive cycle of domination and submission. While the mistress is out of the apartment, Claire and Solange raid her wardrobe and indulge in secret, ritualistic role-play; acting out the scenes of daily domestic arrogance with which she has earned their hatred. Loosely based on the true story of the Papin sisters who shocked French society in the 1930s when they brutally murdered their mistress and her daughter, Jean Genet’s enduring masterpiece simultaneously explores the illusion of theatre and the psychology of retribution. Award-winning designer and director Stewart Laing brings his unique aesthetic style to this new interpretation of Genet’s notorious play. True to Genet’s original anarchic vision, the three women will be played by young men.

A new stage play of the classic 90’s BBC TV series.

When Ready Eddie McKenna, Soul Survivor and double glazing salesman, arrives to reinvigorate St Jude’s defunct hospital radio station he turns more than the ramshackle station upside down. The whisky drinking would-be DJ meets the 19 year-old bipolar Campbell, schizophrenic electronic genius Fergus, OCD Rosalie and the elusive self-harming Francine.

Fighting against illness and perception, Eddie and the patients of St Jude’s strive for their dreams to be accepted.

Hope and joy in the fragile beauty of the human heart wash over this hilarious and profoundly moving adaptation of Donna Franceschild’s cult BBC TV series, set in Glasgow.

UNTITLED PROJECTS

THE SALON PROJECT

8

Page 9: Spring/Summer Brochure 2013

citz.co.ukBOX OFFICE 0141 429 0022

Putting the audience at the heart of the action, this exquisitely constructed re-imagining of a 19th century French salon re-kindles the art of conversation.

Your evening begins with a transformation into full period costume by a coterie of dressers and make-up artists, before you emerge into a mirrored impression of a 19th-century Parisian salon. As you mingle with guests, pioneers in their fields will provoke discussion, speaking on subjects at the vanguard of 21st-century thought on science, politics, technology and the arts.

The Salon Project recreates the exclusive meetings at the heart of what was French society's golden age – an era of change, excess and inquiry. Relive its splendour, contrast it with the present and imagine what the future will hold in this beautifully crafted night of fashion and conversation.

Faustus is restless for knowledge and his insatiable desire for notoriety has driven him to make a pact with the devil in return for the power to perform the black arts.

This life-changing decision propels him into the heady world of the rich and famous as he becomes a globe-trotting magician. At last, women pay him attention, celebrities want to be his friend and he has the world at his feet to manipulate as he pleases.

But was the price worth paying?

Christopher Marlowe’s mythic tale of mankind’s greed for power is given a modern day twist in this new production from the same writer and director team behind the smash hit, Peer Gynt, ‘the finest piece of classic theatre Scotland has produced in half a decade.’ (The Scotsman)

Featuring Kevin Trainor as Doctor Faustus and celebrated Scottish actress Siobhan Redmond as Mephistopheles.

THE SEAGULLBY ANTON CHEKHOV IN A NEW VERSION BY JOHN DONNELLY

Page 13: Spring/Summer Brochure 2013

‘A lake. A young girl who's spent her life beside it. She loves the lake, she's happy, she's free – like a seagull. Then a man comes along, sees her, and destroys her.’

In The Seagull, Chekhov explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the clarity of a doctor and the heart of a poet. Its young, tormented protagonist is determined to overthrow the old and find new forms of expression as he struggles with the frustrations and fulfillments of putting words on a page.

Headlong return to the Citizens with another innovative re-imagining of a classic text in this brand new version by hotly-tipped writer, John Donnelly.

citz.co.ukBOX OFFICE 0141 429 0022

Driven by fear and teetering on the brink of self-destruction, society has lost all moral bearings and nature has turned on itself. The wasps have been killing horses, the cats have come in on the side of the French and it’s hard to know whom to trust.

As Joan grapples with a brutal and engulfing paranoia, a love affair plays out against the odds.

Set in a dystopian society, Far Away is an unsettling, chilling and darkly comic play that changed the landscape of contemporary theatre. A decade after its London premiere, it continues to powerfully resonate with world events today.

This will be the first Scottish production of the play.

Frequently referred to as ‘the greatest living English playwright’, Caryl Churchill is the author of over 30 plays including Top Girls, Serious Money and Cloud Nine.
