In recent years light track athletics has seen a major fall in num-

bers, so former athletes and trainers got together and came

up with the initiative 'Bonus-Track'. The aim of the event is to

increase popularity and interest in the sport. Sihl took part by

supplying media for digital large format printing. Furthermore

U16 athletes (600 m) were given the opportunity to represent

themselves, without it costing them a penny.

Part of the 'Bonus-Track' competition – named the PaceRace is

part of the so-called Swiss Meeting, a national and worldwi-

de renowned athletics meeting, which takes place in 6 places;

Genf, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Zofingen, Basel, Freiburg and Nott-

wil. Here the best of the Swiss track athletes stand alongside

athletes from around the world.

The 'Bonus-Track'-Swiss Meeting splits all participants into

ability / achievement groups over 800 m, 1500 m and 5000 m,

whereby all groups have an appointed pacemaker- this is the

top runner within the group who is responsible for keeping a

reasonable and regular speed, allowing the athletes the advan-

tage of bringing home their best personal performances pos-

sible. Top world athletes attend, allowing all licenced athletes

to qualify in Switzerland for international championships. All

participants are offered the chance to beat their personal bests

under optimal competition conditions and earn themselves a

better starting position.

Prize money is awarded to those Swiss athletes who undercut

preset times. The bigger the gap between the finishing time

Not only do Sihl support young athletes, but Sihl are also a sponsor at the 'Bonus-Track'-Swiss Meeting, a competition held in Switzerland, using SyntiTec PP Film 180 and TyColor on Tyvek® white 210.

and the preset time, the higher the premium paid. Thus hinde-

ring slow, tactical runs with the finishing line being reached as

quickly as possible, along with the top athletes.

This year saw the 5th 'Bonus-Track'-Swiss Meeting, the 1st, 2nd and

4th were held in Hochdorf, whereas the 3rd and 5th meet were

held in Nottwil. Not only do the organizers wish to see more

and more participants taking part each year but they also want

to raise the performance of all athletes, and this is visible from

year to year. The end of June 2012 saw both the top world ath-

letes and international first class runners along with Swiss cham-

pions lined up on the starting line, at the Nottwils sports track.

This years event was preparation for the London Olympics, per-

sonal bests and qualifying times as well as for participation in

national and international competitions.

Today the 'Bonus-Track'-Swiss Meeting is ranked 123rd in the list

of world track athlete events. The entire event is filmed and co-

verage of the race results appear on the website allowing track

athletic enthusiasts to keep themselves up to date and infor-

med, regardless of where they are in the world.

Two times world champion, middle distance runner Maryam Ja-

mal, who went on to win Bronze at the London Olympics star-

ted the races this year.

For the upcoming year the expectations and target times have

been set even higher – the 'Bonus-Track'-Swiss Meeting having

applied, have been accepted by the European Cup Combined

Events, First League, which takes place 29th & 30th June, at the

same time as the 'Bonus-Track' meet. Together with Switzer-

land the following countries also applied to take place: Czech

Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, The Netherlands, Spain and

Sweden.

Strong Sihl Medias for perfect results

Hanspeter Roos, an existing customer of Sihl Di-

rect CH, commissioned to create the appropriate

adverts for the event, chose Sihl SyntiTec PP Film

180 matt. This film allows easy handling has op-

timal processing properties and is easy to mount

using double-sided sticky tape, which can be re-

moved after use. It also has a paper like look.

Although this material is ideally suited for appli-

cation indoors, using pigment inks it can also be

used outside. Due to the synthetic character Syn-

tiTec does not react to changes in temperature

or variations in air humidity offering an excellent

tear resistance and high waterfastness.

Tip: To achieve optimal quality, pick photo paper/

satin in the printer settings.

Should you have any questions about SyntiTec PP

Film 180 please contact Marketing and Product

Manager Pascal Arnold, [email protected]

Of course not only the adverts of individual spon-

sors involved printing – identification numbers

of each of the participating runners were also

needed. The material used for this has to with-

stand wet conditions, hence the customer landed

on the new TyColor on Tyvek® white 210 matt

3261. It not only withstands wet conditions but

it also offers high tear resistance, is easy to cut

and allows a strong contrasting print. Any questi-

ons about this media should be directed to Bruno

Fouquet, [email protected]

LightCuRE Backlit Film (145 DS) – illuminating difference

The new LightCURE film from Sihl is a double-sided matt coa-

ted polyester film for light boxes. Thanks to the special coating

processes, this film allows printing on both sides. This in turn

produces optimal results for both retracted and reflective light

applications; For example when a contrasting additional image

is printed on the reverse.

Alongside this, the double-sided matt finish gives a better and

homogeneous path for the rays of light. So not only does Light-

CURE stand out in its unprinted state but also thanks to this

excellent light refraction, it is also ideal for lightboxes which are

not switched on 24hrs a day.

Just like the DuraCURE Backlits the LightCURE also guarantees

an extraordinary flatness, which in turn allows easy fine pro-

cessing.

Due to its special surface finish LightCURE is perfect for UV

print, but is also compatible for laser, Solid Ink (Océ Colorwave

600/650) and Offset systems. Achieving an attractive long-las-

ting indoor light box image with brilliant colours.

The new SIHL MASTERCLASS Smooth Matt Cotton Paper 320

(4852) and Textured Matt Cotton Paper 320 (4853), are both

produced using 100% cotton base material, and offer very ho-

mogenous surfaces. The SIHL MASTERCLASS Smooth Matt Cot-

ton Paper 320 (4852) has a very smooth surface, whereas the

SIHL MASTERCLASS Textured Matt Cotton Paper 320 (4853) has

a surface with a slight structure.

Both of these SIHL MASTERCLASS papers are made of acid-free

art paper and are ideal for both black & white as well as colour

printing. And they have a long durability (depending on the

inks this can be up to 200 years) and optimal archivability.

The creative Art papers, with their special matt coating, are hea-

vy and have excellent colour saturation, outstanding contrast

definition and high ink density which together generate the

most amazing print results. Whether it be artwork photos, por-

traits or graphics, all prints show perfect grey balance, as well as

outstanding colour reproduction.

The perfect surface for your images

Using the 320 g/m2 heavy material, customers achieve remar-

kable results. The porous coating has been tweaked to allow

the highest resolution possible. The outstanding graduation

and fabulous reproduction of light and shading detail support

an immaculate finished print, even of complicated images.

SIHL MASTERCLASS Smooth Matt Cotton Paper 320 (4852) and

Textured Matt Cotton Paper 320 (4853) are both quick dry medi-

as. The inkjet coating allows perfect ink fixation, even with high

ink densities, leaving the media free of waves, without altering

its form.

The material contains no OBAs with both the base material and

the special coating offering a guaranteed durability. They are

compatible with all high quality inkjet printers, although pig-

ment inks are highly recommended due to their high colour

fastness. Prints can be sprayed or laminated for additional pro-

tection against scratches and colour fading.

installation of Kai Wiedenhöfers 'Border walk'

Born in Schwennigen in 1966, photographer Kai

Wiedenhöfer studied at University of Essen and

since 1989 has followed the Near East as his main

career orientated subject. In the past many grants

and prizes have recognized his work. In Decem-

ber 2012 his latest book 'Confrontier' – about

walls bordering and separating – was launched

worldwide. The main focus being the differences

in border situations; messages being interpreted

differently by the viewer. The Munich City Muse-

um exhibits a grand total of eight panoramic 210

x 70 cm border views between the USA and Mexi-

co all from the photographer.

10

Panorama photos on Wallpaper Persomural 170

Munich hosted the 5th FotoDoks festival for actual documentation photogra-

phy. Stars and newcomers to the scene met in Autumn at the Munich City

Museum. Famous for his book projects and exhibitions, photographer Kai

Wiedenhöfer choose Sihl Wallpaper Persomural 170 to display his extraordi-

nary panoramic view of the American – Mexican border.

From the 17.10 til 25.11.2012 the FotoDoks festival presented this and 14

other pieces of work created following this years theme – Attention-Respect,

control and changes. A round up of pictures trying to find critical solutions for

the struggle of power and responsibility, along with the view of British photo-

graphers. Works of Art to be found at this exhibition reflect atmosphere and

surroundings of our times through pictures.

The variation in the program, including discussions; short documentation

films and workshops, presented by seven British and eight German photo-

graphers, can be found in the Munich City Museum, the Maximillians Forum

and the connecting Munich Gallery. Since 2008 FotoDoks has had a secured

place in the top German events for documentation photography. So it came

as no surprise that it won the Zeit Magazine Foto-Prize, handed over on 20th

October by the chief editor, Christoph Amend. During times of crisis, picture

manipulation and the quickly changing routes to information, this festival,

with its outstanding program, is like a breath of fresh air for the professional

yet controversial exchange.
