IAG• Originated in the Geographical and Geological Commission

of the State of São Paulo

• Created by Provincial Law #9, of March 27, 1886 and headed by the American geologist Orville A. Derby

• Associated with USP when university was founded in 1934

• Incorporated into USP in 1946

• It is one of the major research centers of Brazil on the topics of the Sciences of Earth and the Universe.

IAG• IAG is organized into three departments

– Astronomy– Geophysics– Atmospheric Sciences

• Teaching activities on undergraduate and graduate levels, research and community services

• Department of Atmospheric Sciences created in 1975

• BS Course in Meteorology started in 1977– 20 admissions per year

– 8-semesters long

• 30% of the students enrolled are in the “scientific initiation”, with grants from FAPESP, CNPq, FTCH and FUSP

• Graduate Program began in 1975, currently:– 34 are in the Master’s course

– 40 are in the Doctoral course

– Abrahão de Moraes Observatory, in the city of Valinhos

– the Meteorological Station, located inside USP’s Science and Technology Park in Água Funda neighborhood, São Paulo• Founded in November 1932

• Teaching: – theoretical and practical classes for IAG students and other institutions;

– training for technicians in meteorological observations;

– orientation of students in school work and science fairs.

• Research: – data provision for scientific initiation, scientific articles, seminars,

master's dissertations, doctoral theses, postdoctoral projects, materials for books, magazines and newspapers.

• University Outreach: – attendance of visits with lectures and audiovisual for primary,

secondary and university elementary schools, and general public;

– specific lectures for university extension courses of IAG;

– participation in events;

– visit to the museum of meteorology.

IAG• Besides the intensive collaboration with Brazilian and

foreign research institutions, IAG’s faculty members coordinate research projects of major scientific and socio-economical impact.

• As a result, its large scientific production places IAG among the most productive research institutions in Latin America.
