Transcript from agent P
“Good morning my fellow agents. Chief agent ‘P’ here, head of the international
spy network and leader of the ‘Good Guys’ organisation.
I come to you today with news of a terrible crime against humanity and an
outstanding opportunity for you to use your skills for the greater good. Our
research agents here at Spy-Tech 2020 have acquired information that the world’s
deadliest villain, Dr Dodgy, has been plotting the demise of the world as we know
it using a new lethal weapon designed to wipe out civilisation.
All we know so far is that the weapon, known to his employees as ‘The invisibility
ray’ has been built over the last eighteen months by his evil minions in his hidden
lair and has the capacity to allow him access to all of the world’s most significant
preserved artefacts and paperwork and destroy it all.
Transcript from agent P (continued)
We are looking for intelligent, brave and cunning new agents like you to join us in
a top secret mission to find and stop Dr Dodgy before time runs out.
Successful applicants will be fully trained by our organisation and granted full
access to the latest technology and defence weapons, including the illusive
‘Gotcha 2020 net’ and the ‘Duck and Dive Ferrari GTD’.
If you think you have got what it takes to help us defeat this evil mastermind and
save humankind, please send your cover letter as a matter of urgency.
Stay safe, agents. And remember this is a top-secret mission.
This message will self-destruct in 3-2-1…"
Can you create your own persuasive advertisement…
• Only this time, take on the role as Dr Dodgy recruiting more evil minions for his deadly mission.
• Use persuasive language and vocabulary to explain the benefits of his new ‘invisibility ray’ and provide a brief explanation of the machine. See the next slide for a description of the persuasive techniques that you need to be able to use in Year 5. You should aim to use as many of these as possible in order to be extra persuasive (and evil).
• Design a poster or an advert in a magazine to accompany Dr. Dodgy’splea.
Persuasive Techniques
• Power of three: try an write in threes; use three powerful adjectives; give three reasons (firstly, secondly, thirdly).
• Emotive language: Use words that make the reader feel something.
• Rhetorical questions: Ask questions of the reader to get them thinking. They are very effective, aren’t they?
• Say again: Repeat a key phrase or words
• Undermine opposing views: Tell the reader why they shouldn’t joing the ‘Good Guys Organisation.’
• Anecdote: Give examples of things you have done that the reader will like the sound of.
• Direct address: Use the pronoun ‘you.’ For example, ‘We need you.’
• Exaggeration: Be slightly over the top in order to sound better/more evil than you actually are.
Good spies test their skill and keep in practice by exchanging coded messages.
You are going to use a cypher, known as the ‘Pig Pen cypher in order to write a coded message. The blue boxes to the right show the basics of this cypher, but watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5XRTcLYy40 in order to hear an explaination.
Try and make a coded message for a member of your family or send a secret message to your teacher.
Afternoon Activity: Code breaking practice

Thursday -
Spy Fox was sat in his spacious burrow, drinking a hot
coffee and reading the morning newspaper, when his
spy-phone rang. Spy Fox answered and listened to the
message. It was a message from Head Quarters. The
message said that there was intelligence of a new
threat. Spy Fox jumped up and grabbed his rucksack
which was packed with all of his secret spy defence
weapons. Spy Fox switched on his navigation system
and left straight away, following the signal through the
darkness, towards the new villain’s lair.
Read through the following. Why does it sound repetitive? What do you notice about the openers for each sentence? Compare it with the next slide
Thursday -
Bleary eyed and slowly gathering his thoughts for the day, Spy Fox sat in his spacious burrow drinking a hot coffee and reading the morning newspaper. Suddenly his spy-phone rang, springing his body into action. Ready for business, he answered and listened carefully to the message, which was from Head Quarters. On the other end of the line, an automated female voice explained that there was intelligence of a fresh threat from a new evil mastermind, known as Professor Doom.
“Agent Spy Fox, we believe he intends to use his laser bomb to shrink the sun and steal the world’s supply of sunlight,” said the voice on the end of the line. Knowing that there was no time to lose, the secret agent jumped up and grabbed his rucksack. It was packed with all of his secret spy defence weapons. Unsure of the quickest route, he switched on his trusty navigation system and left immediately, following the signal through the dark streets towards the evil nemesis’ lair.

Have a go at some fingerprint art, perhaps you could do a theme of sporty fingers like below. Or maybe an aquatic theme or try a few spies and their evil villain.
Friday’s Literacy - DADWAVERS
• Watch the Spy Fox clip again.
• Pause the action scenes to think about what think about DADWAVERS –
• How would you describe …? How did SF move…? What did the characters say to each other? Where was…? Can you come up with an example sentence for each of the DADWAVERS criteria in order to describe the action that occurred in the video.
• Description• Action • Dialogue • Where • Adverb• Verb• Estimation of time• Rhetorical question• Simile or metaphors
Look through the next two slides and see where AVERS are used.
Like a stealthy, silent ninja, Spy Fox crept into Professor Doom’s warehouse and concealed himself behind a stack of crates. In the distance, he could hear a robotic voice shouting orders.
“Go that way! No not there! Move it here! Be careful!” the tone and pitch of Doom’s voice told Spy Fox that they must be moving the laser bomb into position. Craning his neck, he tried to catch a glimpse of evil perpetrator and his mousey minions.
Suddenly, without warning, the agent felt a presence behind him and the fur on his neck stood up. Slowly, he turned to see a grimacing purple mouse aiming a large revolver at him. ‘How am I going to get out of this?’ he thought.
Can you identify any other openers?
Remembering the contents of his trusty back pack, he grabbed a smoke bomb and threw it, darting out of reach and rolling closer towards the Professor’s voice. As the smoke cleared it became obvious that he had rolled right into the chaos. A circle of minions surrounded him and sat menacingly above them, on a throne made of bones, like a power hungry dictator, was Doom.
“Ahhh, Fox, I’ve been expecting you!” he growled through gritted teeth and a crooked smile, “meet my laser, Betty.”
Activity – continue with your writing
Continue with your writing from the previous lesson, this time writing an action scene using AVERS.
Try and include Spy Fox, your villain and the weapon that you invented previously.
