Microsoft reporting roadmap

During PASS Summit 2015, Microsoft revealed its

strategy to harmonize reporting content types across

Microsoft Business Intelligence – our reporting roadmap

http://blogs.technet.com/b/dataplatforminsider/archive/2015/10/29/microsoft-business-intelligence-our-reporting-roadmap.aspx

1) Paginated Reports. Standard page-

format report type, with many elements

and complex business logic. Built with

Report Builder or SSDT (Visual Studio).

2) Interactive Reports. Made of

different objects (tiles) that allow

What about PASS Summit 2016?

During PASS Summit 2016, has been announced the forthcoming

integration of Power BI reports into Reporting Services 2016.

This is the last step

of the roadmap, to

allow user save and

deploy Power BI

reports on-premises

and not on the

cloud.

DEMO

Power BI reports on-premises

Currently is only available a technical preview on an

Azure Virtual Machine to find and provision from Azure

Marketplace.

The VM has limited features and a default set of data,

just to show the new functionality.

There is no advice about the release of this long-waited

feature.

Conclusions: choosing the right tool

What's the “scope“ of every tool? Are there overlaps?

SQL Server Mobile Report Publisher: mobile, on-premises

dashboard, with high interactivity and few elements. Fitted for

distributed mobile Corporate BI

Power BI: hybrid reports and dashboards, integrating data from

both on-premises, Internet and cloud data sources. Highly

customizabile and advanced data shaping. Fitted for Self Service BI,

data analyst, and groups collaboration

A company, an individual, a small

group of users who need to

compare data from many

sources, analyze data,

manipulate data, build custom

visualizations of data, share them

with other user and draw a

synthesis from data.

Then you should use ...

Page 41: Sql sat 567_mobile_bi_tools

Conclusions: what is best for …

IT (low) requirements

Storing data on-premises

Data sources and connections availability

Managing big data volumes

Security, authentication and profiling

Querying transforming and formatting data

Retrieving data from multiple sources even on the web

Report authoring easiness and quickness

Delivery model and mobile fruiction

Off line access

Page 42: Sql sat 567_mobile_bi_tools
