Description:
With the latest releases of SharePoint and SQL Server, Microsoft finally delivers on a critical business need: end-user driven reporting solutions. In this session, be prepared to be amazed by the power and ease of Power View, Microsoft's latest reporting technology that lets regular users build rich, dynamic reporting applications right from the browser. We'll then see how PowerPivot lets business analysts use Excel to create and publish powerful reporting and dashboard solutions without any code. We'll then learn how the next generation of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) integrates as a pure SharePoint service application, simplifying deployment and the architecture of your reporting platform.

The Explosion of Data

Today a street stall in Mumbai can access more information than a US President could only a few decades ago.

The decisions we make during this period will frame the kind of world we’ll leave to our future generations.

We crave information the way we crave sex, down into the synapses of our brains.

During the first day of a baby’s life, the amount of data generated by humanity is equivalent to 70x the information contained in the Library of Congress.

Each of us now leaves a trail of digital exhaust, an infinite stream of phone records, texts, browser histories, gps data, and other information that will live on forever.

From the dawn of civilization until 2003, humankind generated 5 exabytes of data. Now we produce 5 exabytes every two days…and the pace is accelerating

Remaining competitive

“By 2015, organizations integrating high-value, diverse, new information types and

sources into a coherent information management infrastructure will outperform their industry peers financially by more than

20%”

PowerPivot Design goal: Powerful, yet simple BI for end users Two ways to use it

Inside Excel 2010 & 2013 (free add in) With Excel Services in SPS 2013 Enterprise

Supports large datasets (millions of rows) that are compressed

Processing is done in memory based on the xVelocity (Vertipaq) engine

Datasets can be pulled from multiple sources and linked together

PowerPivot workbooks can be published to SharePoint

Excel 2013 Enhancements PowerPivot is built in

Just enable as a COM Add-in Power View is also built in

Similar to Power View in SharePoint but available in Excel client Power Query

Simplify data discovery and building your self-service data model

Power Map (preview) Data visualization used to map, explore, and interact with

geographical data

Power View Simple, yet powerful visualization analysis and ad-

hoc reporting Designed for end users Works with two tabular model types

Based on PowerPivot workbooks published in SharePoint

Other tabular models deployed to SSAS Can be exported to PowerPoint Silverlight or HTML5 views

Power View – important concepts Part of Reporting Services in SQL 2012, 2012 R2,

& 2014 It’s presentation ready at all times Reports are designed for the screen It’s fun because it’s smart and simple Requires a basic understanding of Pivot Tables Complements existing reporting capabilities

Does not replace Report Builder or SSDT (BIDS) Does not replace Performance Point or other high-end

analysis tools

SQL Server Reporting Services “Comprehensive, server-based solution that enables the

creation, management, and delivery of both traditional, paper-oriented reports and interactive web-based reports.”

Report can be exported to PDF, Excel, HTML, and other formats

Can be integrated with SharePoint Reports are managed from web interface

(SharePoint or native) Multiple tools can be used to author reports Supports “push-style” subscriptions

What’s new with SSRS? Did I mention Power View? Integration with SharePoint is now done with a service

app Ability to run native and SharePoint integration side-by-

side All management is done through PowerShell or Configuration

Manager Open XML-based rendering of Word (.docx) and Excel

(.xlsx) Data alerts notify you when defined patterns are found Performance optimizations
