What is Squidoo?

Squidoo was created in 2005 by Seth Godin, a marketing guru.

Squidoo gets over 10 million hits a month.

When you create a page on Squidoo, it is called a “Lens”.

Each Lens gets its own PageRank from Google (very important)

Each lens has a built in RSS feed (very important)

You can make money from the lens itself from Squidoo.


According to Seth, he named it that

because a Squid’s eyes have “lens” on

them to “view the world.”

So, when you write, its called a Lens

And he added the extra oo at the end,

because companies with the oo in their

name have done very well.

Why Squidoo??


Why use Squidoo?

Answer these questions:

Is your online business lacking traffic?

Does your website need more help in terms

of making income?

Do you have a product or affiliate product

you want to sell?

If you answered YES to any of these,

Squidoo is the way to get FREE traffic!


Wait..make money?

Squidoo has a number of built in affiliate programs that you can easily add to your Lens.

The two biggest ones are: Ebay and Amazon.

By adding the Ebay affiliate, you can promote Ebay auctions.

By adding the Amazon affiliate, you can promote any products on Amazon.

Be aware, you will share the revenue with Squidoo if you do this.


Why is it so important?

Well, today's business world is cut throat now and everyone is fighting for every penny.

It is a war out there and you need to use every tool you can.

How do most people look for a PI? Yellow Pages? Or Google?

You can pay for the top ranking on Google, but everyone knows that is a paid system, so most look right below that.


Organic Traffic

All the listings below the paid listings are

considered Organic Traffic.

Squidoo is a GREAT way to get these

rankings increased.

But, Squidoo is one part of the system,

but it is a vital part.

This is one way to get your company or

yourself listed at the top of Google


Before you sign up

Before you sign up, you need:

Email account

I suggest that you use Gmail as your account and not your business account.

Why? You may create Lens on many different subjects then just your business.

Create a Twitter account

Create a Facebook Profile


How do I sign up?

Now you need to decide what are you

going to write about.

HINT: the title of your lens should be

related to what you want done.

Meaning, you want better rankings in

Google?

Think about what a client would type into

Google to find you. NOT PI, think

LONG TAIL.


Long Tail???

Keywords are the way search engines

work.

Keywords are: PI, Private Investigator,

GPS, etc

FORGET GETTING THE TOP

RANKINGS FOR THOSE!!

Besides those are worthless keywords,

people using those are browsing. You

want BUYERS.


Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keywords is where everything

is at now, and what you need.

Consider the following list:

Private Investigator in GA

Divorce & Private Investigator in GA

Which do you think is someone looking

to hire right now?


First step RESEARCH

The first thing you need to do is RESEARCH what you want to write about.

What do I mean by this?

Search Squidoo for Lens that are similar to what you want to write about.

Look at what they did, how they arranged things and look at their ranking.

Next, go to the Top 100 and look at the Top 100 Lens, see what they did to get that ranking.


Second Step

Gather your resources

You will need your material for your lens,

so it is best to have it ready before you

write your lens.

Blog


Now your ready!

Now it is time to setup your profile.

Go to My Dashboard


You BETTER put up a profile!!

Remember, Squidoo is ALL about

setting you up as an EXPERT.

Creating your first Lens

Now back up to the top and right next to

the flaming eye, click on “Make a new

lens!”

Now that you are ready to create your

lens, lets get moving.


NOTE:

Avoid putting too much sales jargon into

your Lens

Definitely do some research on the affiliate

links that you place on your Lens, make sure

they are profitable.

Provide REAL information.

The law at Squidoo is that you must provide

useful and valuable information to your

readers.

Creating your first Lens


Lens title

So, for this I would name my Lens

either:

Private Investigator in Georgia

Hiring a Private Investigator in Georgia

Hiring a Divorce Private Investigator in

Georgia

(I expect to see those lens tomorrow!!)


Remember, your lens MUST be keyword

rich!

Use the keyword that you want to rank

for in the title of your lens.

So, when it comes time to pick your

URL, it will look like:

You need to think like you are using Google to find the EXACT thing you want.

If you are looking for a PI in Georgia, would you just enter “PI?”

So, whatever you are writing about, think like you are surfing the web, what exact words or close to it would you use?

Also, it shows 4 keywords, but Squidoo really allows up to 40! I suggest you use AS MANY AS YOU CAN!

Welcome to your lens!


Welcome to your first lens

Upload a picture! Everyone wants to know that you are a real person.

So, click on Introduction, Contents & Discovery Tool… EDIT

Start filling in all the blanks and upload that picture!

Go up to the top and click on Table of Contents, turn it on!

Then click on Discovery Tool, and turn it on, but you have to add 3 favorite lens. Always use ones with high ranks

Once that is done, click on SAVE


Adding modules

In order to have a good lens that

Squidoo likes, you need to have at least

8 modules on your lens.

Also, you should update your lens at

least once a week.

What is an update? It could be a new

text module, a new RSS feed, anything

really.


Squidoo is looking for at least 8 modules

for your lens if you really want to rank.

1 video

1 feedback

2 Mix and Match (Amazon and twitter for

me!)

Modules are the different parts of a

Squidoo lens.

There are many to choose from, here

are a few of them.

And remember, try and keep them in the

same are or something that you can

make relate to your lens.

RSS..add your blog

Okay, next you want to add your blog,

this will be an RSS feed.

RSS is Real Simple Syndication, it’s a

way to get the news out about a page

quickly.

You can sign up at www.wordpress.com

and get your free Wordpress blog.

Make sure you title the blog after what

you page is about! Or after your name.

New Text Module

This is where you do your writing.

Give the module a title, subtitle and then start writing.

It will tell you when you have written the basic amount, but be sure to write more.

Don’t write to much, since you can add another text module with more in it.

And that is a secret, every two or three days, add a new text module, or a new item to your lens. This keeps it fresh.


When it comes to writing on Squidoo,

don’t worry about being perfect!

If you do, you will take forever to write

just one lens.

Think like Nike, Just Do It!

As you get more and more experience

with Squidoo, you will get better and

better at writing.

Amazon module

If you want to use the Amazon module, here is where you can configure it.

Remember, that you are sharing any sales with Squidoo.

Give the module a title, subtitle “Stuff I think is cool on Amazon” and then choose what will be shown.

You can let Amazon pick or you can.

If you have any products of your own in Amazon, then you want to pick the items.


Flickr Photos

Next you can add some photo’s from

Flickr.com

Flickr.com is a web 2.0 website that you

need to sign up for in order to show any

photos.

Now you do not need to use this, but it

does help.

Maybe you do not want pictures of

yourself up on Flickr.

What about screen shots?

What about cars

What about computers

What about cell phones?

Any picture can be used, but try to make

it something you can tie to your articles


YouTube video

In this section, you can add a YouTube video that is about the subject your are talking about.

I STRONGLY suggest that you make the video!

Now, don’t get nervous, it does not have to be a video of you, it can be a Camtasia presentation of something

Or it can be a general picture and an audio recording of you talking.

Make as many of these as you can, they

are a great way to get rankings and they

really help out with the Squidoo lens

People really like the videos in lens

Find the HOTTEST videos on YouTube

and check the account.

Odds are its someone you can approach

Yes!

You will need to sign up at:

www.delicious.com and setup an

account.

Here you will add a list of bookmarks to

sites that you have and also to other

sites about your topic.

If you don’t want to use any others, then

use links to US Government sites.

bookmark and let Google do the rest!

Make sure each page is SEO ready as

That means, description, keywords and

title with anchor text.

You should do this, it will help in making this a more personable experience for everyone and get your lens ranked higher.

Remember Facebook Profiles?? Make sure to use KEYWORDS in your Bio!

Also, don’t forget the photo!

Okay, like I said before, Squidoo allows up to 40 tags

USE ALL OF THEM!!!

Just go to the section on the right hand side that says Tags

Next click the down arrow

Now, click on the Add More Tags, and keep adding until you reach the 40 tag limit.


What now?

Now it is time to hit the Publish button!

Once you do this, your lens is ready to

go.

Scroll to the bottom and you will see

where you can send it out on Twitter

And you can also send on Facebook,

just click on the link!


Updates

To have a successful lens, you need to

update the lens.

Or as they say “give it some love”

A good schedule is at least once a

week.

Just add a new text module

A new picture

A new video, anything.


RSS

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication

It is a way to send out your webpage as

a “news” item.

Your Squidoo lens has a built in RSS

box.

Make sure that every time you update

the lens, you send out an RSS blast.

I use RSSBot for all of them

Once you have done the RSS update,

you need to PING the RSS feed.

If you use RSSbot, like I do, it has that

option built in.

This is how you get the word out on

Google about your page.

Add to the site your Title, your URL (full

squidoo url remember), and a text

discription, and your tags.

It will then submit it to 50 social

A very easy program to use, and it really automates everything you need to do in order to bookmark all of your Web 2.0 sites and your Money site.

How often should you update your lens?

At least once a week is good, add a new

text module, a new video, etc.

If you really want to wait, you can go

once a month, but that is a long time!

Update your lens!
