DECEMBER 2018 SR 520 Quarterly Progress Report: Oct.-Dec. 2018 diverse subcontractors on the Montlake Project Ritke, Mike Salmon and Dan Raynor are ready to get started on the Montlake Project. Graham’s Diversity Manager Suzanne Arkle Graham is excited about the opportunity to build relationships and develop partnerships with MSVWBEs – Minority, Small, Veteran, and Women-owned Business Enterprises – on the SR 520 Program. Graham is committed to building upon the best practices used on its previous projects that support and build small business capacity and contracting opportunities. Graham’s experience designing and implementing comprehensive diversity and inclusion programs has prepared Graham well to be successful. Graham’s approach is to incorporate all aspects of its inclusion plan into the subcontractor procurement strategy. “Construction offers limitless career possibilities for women.” That, according to Laura Rannow, immediate past president of the South Sound Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The South Sound chapter started in 1972 but, interestingly enough, the national organization began right after World War II when Rosie the Riveter was expected to put on her apron and go back into the kitchen.

“Women in Construction banded together to provide much needed support and now NAWIC has over 4,000 members with 170 chapters nationwide. We need that opportunity to connect and support one another. Although the industry has progressed in supporting women in the trades, there are still challenges.” Women in the
