Dear Friends,
It is with immense pleasure that we
bring you Udaan, the newsletter of Sree
Narayana Guru College of Education (B.Ed).
The name of our newsletter – Udaan –
signifies a strong, independent and highly
creative nature, with drive and ambition to
have experiences and accomplish things out
of the ordinary. It very aptly sums up the
prospects of our Institution. This newsletter
will serve to reinforce and allow increased
awareness, improved interaction and
integration among all of us. This newsletter
will be a medium to provide proper
acknowledgement and respect all the efforts
of students and staff.
This issue covers all the major
events, workshops conducted in our college
of education. As a professor, I feel delighted
to see the students participating in different
events and deliver their best and also to
highlight the achievements of our faculty
members during the academic year 2015-17.
The hard work shown by the students in
such events and workshops is portrayed
effectively by the College Newsletter.
This is only a small step towards a
long journey. To achieve progress and to
meet objectives we have to cross numerous
milestones. This maiden issue of newsletter
should inspire all of us for a new beginning
enlightened with hope, confidence and faith
in each other in the road ahead...... Happy
Reading !
Mrs. Pushpalatha RajaLecturer.
We belong to the Jet age – an age
when speed overrules our life. We are
bound by gadgets. We have become the
slaves of these gadgets. Soon our venture to
go Cashless will succeed too. We have
become so robotic and zombies that we have
almost forgotten we are special creations of
the Almighty. How many of us create that
little time to „peep within‟ or time out for
„soul searching‟ to find out reasons for the
constant turbulence that most of us
experience? If we start doing this exercise
we will surely realize we are burdened with
too much of I–Centeredness or Me–
Centeredness. Can we not find ourselves
and connect with others? We need to go
outside ourselves while simultaneously
letting others inside.
As teachers, the others in our life are
our students. Do I have that rare attribute of
“Empathy” for my students? A reflection on
this is necessary. My dear students these
many years you have been at the „receiving
end‟, soon the tables will be turned and you
will be at the „giving end‟. In what measure
can I create space for others to enter into my
life? Am I prepared and ready to replace the
I– Centeredness with We–Centeredness?
The journey is on…..It is YOU who will
decide whether you will continue or give up.
It is definitely not easy but it is surely not
impossible. Have you observed it, in each
one of us? Have you tried to emulate it?
For, it is NOW or NEVER.

Most of us are living our lives as a marathon. We have run the race against time, trying to achieve maximum result. But we
all need to stop & think! “Life is not a race….. But a journey to be savoured each step of the way”.
We all need to retreat from our routines & take those little breaks in between to rejuvenate ourselves. We need to replenish
our energy to be able to continue with our journey with a hectic schedule, I do manage to take time out for myself that‟s the time I
go & sit close to the sea. The ocean is everything I want to be; Beautiful mysterious wild & free. The waves also teach us something
…… that whatever comes, has to go.
Sometimes the sea is quiet & calm making me realize that I need this serenity in my life too. The waves cast their spell as
they are spread over a vast open space…… till infinity…… It reminds me of God‟s infinite love for us. The peaceful environment
makes me want to read…… for hours……. Then I remember I cannot be greedy. I savour the little time I get, put a book mark &
keep it away for the next time. The time that I can escape to my dream world from the real world.

Travelling to places is fun I believe. When we tour we want to see the best places in that location. It always helps us to hire
a travel guide when we visit a famous spot/ hotspot. He tells us everything about the place. He will tell you those facts which you‟d
never known. Well it might seem like a pre -recorded script that we are listening to when he exaggerates about the place. It‟s just
that he‟s mastered it well as he has said the same thing to many others. This was just to draw an analogy to the role of a mentor in
our life. We all choose our destination in life. There are multiple routes to reach the destination. We come across people who‟ve
been there, seen that, done that. We take their guidance to reach the place. Paths trodden by the mentors are paths very well known
to them. They can exactly tell you the stumbling blocks. I wonder if there is any great person who believes that he has done it all
solely without any help.
Mentee seeks help and mentor wants to help. Mutual voluntary agreement between the mentor and mentee. Thinking positively
is the mentor‟s key advice. You need to believe that it's very hard to be successful without having a good mentor, it is essential to
have someone you can look up to and emulate. Also, a mentor will show you the tricks and pitfalls of the game because they have
likely already been around the block. When you work with your mentor you tend to imitate and adopt the mentors behavior and
attitude. A mentor is very sorted person in his thoughts and his clarity in his thoughts helps him to take quick decisions. Mentor can
receive evaluation and constructive feedback from his mentees regarding their performance to enable them reflect on their aspect of
mentoring, thus developing their mentoring skills and improving quality and promoting best practice. Mentors must self-reflect and
keep a watch on their SWOT. Thus mentors are continuous learners themselves. A good mentor radiates hope and optimism. A
good mentor has strong interpersonal skills.
Teachers are blessed to be in a profession that they can mentor and motivate. All teachers must ensure that they mentor some
lives. It will help to develop beautiful personalities. Mentoring can help youth as they go through challenging life transitions,
including dealing with stressful changes at home or transitioning to adulthood. The youth can benefit in many ways due to
mentoring. It will lead to healthier relationships and lifestyle choices, better attitude, higher educational aspirations ,enhanced self-
esteem and self-confidence, improved behavior, both at home and at school, stronger relationships with parents, teachers, and peers,
Improved interpersonal skills, decreased likelihood of initiating drug and alcohol use.
My dear peers, lets ensure we touch some lives. Lets make a difference in creating this world a better place to be in. A big
thank you to you teachers; you have touched us somehow somewhere and we are bitten by the MAD (make a difference)
bug that once bit u somewhere.

‘You will never know how much you can
accomplish until you try. Never stop trying.’ This thought was
the driving force for the one day Workshop ‘Evolving As A
Person And Formation Of Oneself’ organized by Sree
Narayana Guru College Of Education (B.Ed.) for B.Ed.
students. The workshop was organised on 18th March, 2017.
The EPC4 course incorporated in the 2 year B.Ed.
program aims to help student-teachers develop an
understanding of themselves and help them focus on
developing themselves both personally and professionally as a
teacher, through conscious ongoing reflection. With this aim in
mind the workshop was organised to equip student teachers
with personal and professional insights with respect to better
understanding of their self as they set forth on their journey as
teachers.
The resource persons for the workshop were Prof.
Ravi Vaidee, an academician in charge of the part-time
management programs of a leading B-School in Mumbai and
with corporate industrial experience of more than 30 years and
Dr. Anna Fernandes, Principal of Sree Narayana Guru College
Of Education (B.Ed.)
The workshop covered aspects of self discovery,
building better interpersonal relationships and gaining insights
in improving the self and included individual & group
activities, case studies, presentations, videos, etc. A good
feedback from the participants was like a positive stroke to plan
new ventures.
