“Annadanam Samam Danam Trilokeshu Na Vidyathe"

Annadanam is supreme among all danas and incomparable to any other. Devotees can donate for Annadanam in the Temple for important festivals

in 2016. Interested devotees, please contact the Temple Management to learn more and reserve a day.

Chairman’s message Jai Sriman Narayana! Dear Devotees, 2015 was an exciting year! We celebrated two major utsavams, Brahmotsavam and Pavitrotsavam, with great religious fer-vor, as we did our scheduled calendar events like Sankranti, Ugadi, Sri Rama Navami, Vijaya Dasami and Deepavali. We added two qualified priests and a Talihaswamy to our operational support, and are encouraged by the reception that they have received. The Chandalika dance drama that we conducted earlier this summer and the educational services that we provide at the temple showcase our commitment to promoting our heritage. I am also happy to share that, with your help, we have reduced the temple’s debt from 1.3 million to 850,000 since its inception in 2012. There has been a significant growth in the devotee population that visits our temple to seek Lord Sree Venkateswara’s blessings. During major events during the year, we noted that there is the pleasant inconvenience with parking and other logistics on temple grounds, and have a plan in place to address it. In view of these new developments, the temple Board has come up with two immediate goals. One, to acquire land for parking, priest quarters, and other facilities; and the other, make a concerted effort to pay down the debt that it has acquired for temple construction and maintenance. Efforts to ac-complish these goals will fall under two projects: SREENIVASA SAMARPANAM – Started several months ago with the goal of paying off the debt within next three years. PARKING – Started recently with the goal of raising $150,000.00 to complete construction of the parking lot and other facili-ties. To make the above projects successful, we need your support. We project that if every devotee donates a sum of

$1000 over the next year or two, we would be able to completely pay off the debt and also make the necessary enhance-ments to the temple premises without compromising speed or quality. It is my assurance that every penny of your tax-deductible donation to these two projects will be used exclusively towards them. Please donate generously.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the members of the various Committees, I thank each and every one of you that has given freely of your time, energy and earnings to make this temple a place of your own. Your commitment is what has made all of the progress possible, and in such a short period of time. I look forward to see you at the temple soon. May Lord Venkateswara bless you and your families with health, happiness, and wealth in 2016. Sincerely, Ramakrishna Bandi, M.D. Chairman, Board of Trustees Sree Venkateswara Temple

Thanks to all for your consideration in following our Temple Etiquette

Thiruppavai & the origin of the Bhogi festival by Narender P. Reddy

Thiruppavai is a composition by Kodai (Andal, Godha) consisting of thirty pasurams of spiritual awakening. Each pasuram is

similar to one step of a thirty-step ladder for attaining Bhagavad anubhavam.

In first five pasurams, Andal invites us to partake in the vratam for an immersive experience in Krishna anubhavam, and asks us to

chant the divine names and sing the glory of Lord Krishna and His various incarnations in order to get rid of our sins and problems.

The next ten pasurams request various devotees who have experienced Krishna to join the group. Singing the glory of Krishna, the

group approaches the gate keepers of Nanda, and then, Nanda (Acharya), mother Yashoda (Astakshari Manthra) and Neela Devi

(Lakshmi / Nappinnai) ask Sree Krishna to come and sit on the throne (23rd pasuram).

In the 24th pasuram, they perform Mangala-shasanam to Lord Sree Krishna:

“AnRivvulagalam Aalandai Adi pOtri…” - a Mangala-shasanam to the divine feet which measured the worlds.

Mangalam to your strength which destroyed Lanka; you killed Shakatasura with a kick of your foot; Mangalam to your Kalyana

gunam and fame. Mangalam to you who killed Vathsasura and the demon who came in the disguise of a wood apple tree. Mangalam

to your feet. Mangalam to your vaatsalaya gunam which made you lift the (Govardhana) hill and provide protection. Mangalam to

the weapon in your hand with which you killed the enemies and gained victory. We came here singing your glories. Please have

mercy upon us!

It is customary for devotes to go to the Temple on the day of this pasuram (Saturday January 10, 2016, this year) to partici-

pate in the mangala harathi.

In the 25th pasuram, they blissfully praise Krishna’s childhood; how He appeared from the womb of Devaki and was then raised by

Yashoda. In the 26th pasuram, they indirectly seek to be with Krishna by asking for the conch like the one He holds, a big drum

(Namaha shabdam), bhaagavathaas to sing His glory, a flag and a canopy (Garuda).

“Oh! vatapatra-shayi, everything is possible for you.”

Payasa Annam on the day of the 27th pasuram:

In the 27th pasuram “Koodaarai vellum sheer Govinda…,” they ask Krishna that He decorate them with ornaments, clothes, etc.

They want to feast on the payasa-annam along with Krishna. Andal prayed to Vatapatra-shayi, the Deity in the local temple in Sri

Villiputthoor, and promised that if She gets married to either Ranganayaka Swami or to Venkateswara Swami, she would offer a

thousand bowls (gangallams) of payasaannam. At the end of the vratam, Andal got married, with great pomp, to Ranganayaka Swa-

mi (Utsava Vigraham of Sri Rangam), and left for Sri Rangam along with Ranganayaka. At Srirangam, upon entering the Garbha-

gruham, she merged into Sri Ranganayaka. She therefore never had a chance to make the offering of payasam after her marriage.

Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja (who came much after Andal) said “My Akka (sister) did not have a chance to offer the payasam. I, as her

brother, should fulfil her vow.” Therefore, Ramanuja instituted the tradition of offering Payasa-annam in all Sri Vaishnava Temples

on the day of this 27th pasuram. Our Temple continues this tradition. This year, the Koodaarai…pasuram is going to be on

January 12, 2016. Please come to the Temple and take the payasa-anna prasadam.

In the 28th pasuram, they express their neechatvam (lowliness) that they are ignorant, that they don’t have any punyam or know of

any other way to attain it. However, the only punyam is that You (Krishna) out of your own accord have descended onto our Goku-

lum and are in the midst of us. That is our punyam. We can’t get rid of the relationship with You (You are the controller and the in-

dweller). We were ignorant and called you by name. You neither have a blemish nor need (kuRRai vonRum Illada Govinda!). Please

forgive us. You are the only way for us.

In the 29th pasuram, they say, “We want to serve you intimately; we want to have an unbreakable, permanent bond with you. Please

destroy all other worldly (samasaric) desires. We want to be with you for seven life times (be wedded to you).

The 30th pasuram is the phalasruthi. The pasuram “Madavanai-kesavanai….” says that whoever reads and chants in the same man-

ner in which they (gopikas) obtained the eternal service of Madhava (who obtained Sri Maha Lakshmi after churning the milky

ocean) and Kesava (who is the Lord of Brahma and Rudra), as described by Kodai (Andal) the daughter of Sri Batta Natha of Sri

Viliputthoor in her composition of a garland of thirty pasurams in the great Tamil language, will surely obtain the Supreme Bliss

and unparalleled grace of Lord Sriman Narayana.
