2006 Annual ScholarshipAwarding Ceremony

The annual scholarship awardingceremony for 2006 was held onSeptember 2 at Sri Sudassanaramaya,Battaramulla, Sri Lanka, from 10:00AM to 4:00 PM. This ceremony waspresided by our Patron and Advisor,Venerable Dr. Mirisse Dhammika, withthe participation of 77 new scholarshipstudents, their parents, some of thescholarship sponsors and other wellwishers of the foundation. The chiefguest for the occasion was Mr. UpaliGunasekara - Principal of RoyalCollege, Colombo.

Out of the 77 scholarships awarded,60 were for Grade 12 students whilethe remaining 17 were memorialscholarships for first year universitystudents.

Scholarship award certificates andstudy packs were distributed to all newscholarship recipients. The expenses ofthe award ceremony, including lunchand refreshments for all theparticipants have been borne by Mr.Sudu Vatagodakumbura, VicePresident of the SLCSF.

We thank all the students and theirparents for participation; aftertravelling long distances from remotevillages and cities in some cases. Wealso thank the scholarship sponsorswho participated and awardedcertificates to the students they havesponsored. Our thanks also go toVenerable Dhammika, the chief guestMr. Upali Gunasekara, our Sri LankanCoordinator - Mrs. Seetha Goonetillekeand all other supporters in organizingthis successful event. We also thankMr. Sudu Vatagodakumbura for hisgenerosity in meeting expenses of theceremony.

New Grade 12 ScholarshipAwards for 2006

This year, we have awarded 60scholarships for Grade 12 students.They were selected from severalhundred applications received, basedon their G.C.E. (Ordinary Level)examination results in 2006, incomeper family member and consideringother special circumstances (such as,deceased parents). All these studentshave obtained at least eight A’s in theG.C.E. (O/L) examination, while manyof them have received an impressive,straight 10 A’s!

Establishment of WijayasenaKiriwattuduwa MemorialScholarship Fund

Mrs. Seetha Goonetilleke – our SriLankan Coordinator, has establishedthe “Wijayasena KiriwattuduwaMemorial Scholarship Fund” forfunding scholarships for first yearuniversity students in the medicalfaculty on an on-going basis, inmemory of her beloved father, late Mr.Wijayasena Kiriwattuduwa, a retiredschool principal.

These scholarships provide Rs. 1000per month for a period of one year tothe selected students in Sri Lankanuniversities. This year, twoscholarships have been awarded fromthis fund. We thank Mrs. Goonetillekefor her generosity in establishing thisfund for helping financially ouruniversity students.

Did you know …Over 80% of our 2004 batch ofscholarship recipients havepassed the 2006 G.C.E.Advanced Level examination. Andeight of our students haveobtained 'A’ passes for all of theirsubjects!

Memorial Scholarship Awards toUniversity Students

This year, for the first time, 17scholarships have been awarded tofirst year university students in themedical faculties.

A monthly award of Rs. 1000 isprovided for one year to each of theselected students. The main selectioncriteria were the academic excellenceof the student (based on the results ofthe G.C.E. Advanced Levelexamination) and the financial statusof the student’s family.
