Message from the President World is changing in many aspects such as political,

economic and health care. There is uncertainty and at

times apprehension in the future of the nations like Sri

Lanka where the Gross Domestic Product and per Capital

Incomes are low.

Sri Lankan healthcare system evolves with changing

political and administrative systems.

The relative roles played by the key providers are also

changing. Ministry of health remains the major provider

of comprehensive healthcare including oral health care.

In fulfilling the objective of uplifting the health status of the entire nation, the Ministry health takes

the responsibility of covering the activities of promotions of health, prevention of disease and

providing effective treatment and rehabilitation to raise the health status of the population. The

private sector oral health care providers tend to focus on oral health care services including the

treatment modalities not freely available in the government sector.

The challenges faced by oral health care personnel vis a vis are:-

1. Rising cost of Health care & Dental care.

2. Rising expectations of patients.

3. Rising treatment needs of the elderly.

4. Inequality in oral health care services available to our population.

We are dental professionals of Sri Lanka Dental Association’ need to take cognizance of these issues

and do our part to mitigates them in whatever sphere of activity we are in. one of the activities we

have already identified where we all can help is on the oral health care of the elderly in our society

especially for these senior citizens who cannot afford to have dental care.

Every member of the Dental Profession needs to realize that we are in a service providing

profession and have an obligation in discharging our social responsibilities to our people who

cannot afford to pay for services.

There are two other challenges that the Sri Lanka Dental Association has taken up for the next two

or three years being the hosting of the Asia Pacific Dental Congress 2019 and the Construction of

the SLDA’s own office and auditorium.

I have confidence that with the advice and support of the members these challenges can be met

without much difficulty.
