Yagnopaveetham (the sacred thread, representing the three responsibilities) is the ultimate purifier since time immemorial (born along with the creation), bestows longevity and fame, is sacred, clean and unsoiled and confers onto the wearer both knowledge and power.

I am discarding in water that sacred thread which has its strands broken and which is decayed and impure. May the radiance of Brahman and long life be mine.
