He felt sad. Suddenly a thought flashed on his mind. Just before retiring to bed, he laid a plank in his room on which he spread a white sheet upon which he laid rice flower. He prayed to the Lord. “Should you desire me to make a nice pair of slippers for you, please leave an impression of your feet on the rice flour.”
When he woke up in the morning after a pleasant sleep, he was delighted to find the impression of feet on the flour. He was thrilled and hastened to make an excellent pair of slippers to suit the exalted feet of the Lord and reached Tirupathi in the next couple of days. Alas. He was not allowed to go into the temple! “Did I not strive to get the slippers ready for your Lord with devotion? Why do you too shun me without bestowing your grace on me? I guess you too have joined those upper class people to neglect me? then why did you care to leave an impression of your feet?” he pleaded fervently and swooned. The All-knowing Almighty does not care for the man-made caste or creed! The all-pervading Lord instantly appeared before him wearing his slippers so devotedly designed to suit his august feet and said: “Chinnaya. I appreciate your deep faith in me. I will wear the pair of slippers made by you to walk down to Tiruchanur from Tirupathy every day. Aren't you happy?” Unalloyed love/devotion is unique: It was Dwapara Yugam. The renowned itinerant sage Narada had the false pride that he was the ultimate Hari Baktha in the three worlds. The mischievous nonpareil Kannan wanted to make Narada realise that he was wrong. Narada dropped by at Dwaraka to call on Kannan. As Narada entered the mansion, posing as though he had not noticed his presence, Kannan asked Rukmani to name the greatest Hari Bakthan in the three worlds. Rukmani, not realising the presence of Narada replied: “ Doubtless, the greatest Hari Baktha is Narada, is n't it?”

The Terazhundoor Emperuman
Thiruvukkum-ThiruvAgia selva-
dheivathukkarasEa...
TirumArbA-nediyAnEa....
.
What impresses even a casual reader of these 40
pasurams on Terazhundoor, is the extremely
endearing epithets and addresses that Azhwar
reserves for this Emperuman. We wonder whether
Sri Ramanuja, while composing his Gadyams, drew
inspiration from these pasurams, which contain the
choicest of sobriquets for the Lord. Here are a few,
for a sample?
Deivatthukku Arase! Tirumaarba! Tiruvukkum
Tiru aagiya Selva! Maalvanna! Mazhai pol oli vanna! Cchandoga! Pouzhiya!
Taitthireeya! Saama Vediyane! Nedumaale!
Neenda Tol udayaai! Iyya! Parane! Madhavane!
Madhusooda! Narane! Naaranane! Arane! Panbaala!
Pavitthirane!
Andaa! Aayaa! Kaar vanna! Endaai! Nediyaane!
Putkodiyaai!
Perhaps these are the only group of pasurams, in
the entire 4000, to contain so many endearments
addressed to the Lord and show Sri Kalian?s
insatiable thirst for naama sankeertanam. Azhwar
is loathe to sticking to the thousand names of the
Vishnu Sahasranamam and coins many new and
extremely sweet sobriquets for Emperuman, each
emotive and expressive epithet bringing out newer
and newer aspects of His glory. The other day, I
came across a catalogue of Emperuman?s
tirunaamams (?naamaavali?), compiled from Divya
Prabandam, and predictably, most of the names
were culled out from Periya Tirumozhi. When we
read the poignant pasurams of Parakala in
conjunction with the glorious Gadyams of Sri
Ramanuja, we readily understand the prayer to the
latter, for blessing us with the esoteric purport of
the former’s outpourings?Engal gadiye!
Iraamaanusa Muniye!.....Mangayar kon eenda marai
aayiram anaitthum tangu manam nee enakku taa!
It is interesting to note that four of the names
Azhwar bestows on Emperuman relate to His
association with the Shruti, perhaps in expansion of
Sri Nammazhwar?s words, ?Ulan sudar migu
surudiyul?. Not content with saying merely that
Emperuman has the Shruti as His eternal abode,
that He is to be seen through the wise eyes of the
Shruti alone, that it is He alone who knows its
eternal and esoteric purport, Sri Tirumangai
Mannan mentions each and every section of the
Shruti independently and associates Emperuman
with them??Chhandoga! Pouzhiya! Taittireeya!
Saama Vediyane!??relating the Lord with the
Chhandogya Upanishad, the Kousheetaki
Braahmanam, the Taittireeya Samhita and the
Sama Veda as a whole. All this demonstrates
Azhwar?s erudition, his boundless veneration for
the Shruti, and his conviction that it is the Shruti
that shows up Emperuman .

We know that Emperuman dwells in all
of us, in the form of the

invisible to all but Yogis.
However, even in this
microscopic form, He does not
forsake His Consort and is
present in our hearts along
with Her, says Azhwar,
confirming Sri Nammazhwar?s
assertion that Sri
Mahalakshmi is inseparable
from Emperuman, whatever form
He might assume. This
significant truth is brought
out by Azhwar?s lines, Paavai

WOMEN IN EPICS.
8.URMILA VINAYAM
Urmila was daughter of Janaka, king of Mithila. She was a woman of good character, a great scholar, and a talented painter. Urmila has been described as an incarnation of silence and she has been in unconsciousness state just after the beginning of the journey to the forests by Lakshmana who followed his elder brother Rama instantly. She could not spend even few days with Lakshmana after she got married. Lakshmana left Urmila for 14 years, as his brother Rama was asked to go on exile by their father Dasaratha and he felt that he could not leave his brother till such period. It is learnt that Urmila took all the tiredness of Lakshmana, who was serving Rama and Sita without sleep for fourteen years. Urmila spent 14 years by just in front of oil lamp and feeding oil in the lamp continuously to keep flame burning, till Lakshmana returns. When Urmila was requesting Lakshmana that she will accompany him in forest, he has not agreed. But Lakshmana was busy throughout serving Rama in exceptionally good service, without any fear or concern over safety of Urmila. Later ,they had two sons, Angad and Dharmaketu.
VIVAHAM
Rama and Lakshmana led by Viswamitra set out journey to Mithila. In Videha, the princess saw the wonderful bow. Janaka said that the bow was given to king Devavrata, his forefather by Gods. During ploughing the field for sacrifice, he saw a girl baby, and he named her as Sita. She was then brought up as his own daughter. He has taken a vow to marry her to one, who strings the ancient bow. Rama broke the wonderful Shiva Danush . Then Janaka sent an invitation to Dasaratha to come to Mithila, and started making preparations for wedding of Sita with Rama. Janaka's brother Kushadhwaja had two daughters named Mandavi and Sruthakeerhy. Janaka's second daughter is Urmila. Vasishta then had consultations with Kushadhwaja and decided the wedding of his two daughters to Bharatha and Satrugna. For Urmila ,Lakshmana was proposed as bridegroom. These developments gave much joy and caused tears out of joy (Anandakkanneer ) to Janaka. Thus wedding of Urmila with Lakshmana along with her sister Sita with Rama, and her cousins with Bharatha and Satrugna took place in a grand scale.
Urmila after her wedding, one day, she was just making an art of painting a scene of Rama's coronation for sending the same to her father. Lakshmana accidentally came there in some angry mood with a mind on Kaikeyi’s orders for Rama’s exile. But Lakshmana decided then to go with Rama and Sita to the forest. This resulted a great shock to Urmila and caused toppling canvas of art and spilling of colors. Urmila lamented much first on the fate of spoiled picture. But Lakshmana coolly said as he was responsible for this spoiling, and Kaikeyi responsible for ruining coronation of our Rama.
VANAPRASTHAM
Lakshmana simply said as himself and Sita are going to forest with Rama . As her sister Sita is going to forest with her husband, she was just thrilled as she goes to serve Rama. Urmila was not insisting her following Lakshmana , like sita. As objective of Lakshmana's exile is for the sake of serving Rama and Sita in the forest, Urmila only prayed for successful completion of the same without any hindrance throughout. She asked not to worry or not even to think of her during this period. Urmila considered Rama will think’ Ayodhya without Sita, as only a forest’. She suggested Lakshmana to forget Ayodhya totally and treat the forest itself as Ayodhya, as Rama is there. (Raman irukkum idam Ayodhya). This tremendous encouragement to Lakshmana by Urmila is something extraordinary. Urmila told as Rama and Sita will be his father and mother in forest and serving them faithfully to be the main concern for him. As Ideal daughter in law, Urmila consoled Kousalya not to grieve much for separation from son and to give encouragement to him as they are going together fulfilling the desire of their parents. Urmila may therefore be called as Graha lakshmi or Dharmapathini as she stood for her husband's righteousness.
As Urmila sacrificed Lakshmana was able to pay more attention to Rama, even more than Sita. Rama declared in many times that his wife Sita was not so high in his affection to his brother Lakshmana. Rama says as "A wife quite the equal of Sita, may be found immediately, if we make a thorough search. But a brother like Lakshmana supreme in war, it will be very difficult. (vi.49.6).In another occasion, Rama said Dese dese kalatrane dese dese cha bandhavaa Tham thu desam na pasyami yatra bratha sahodara "wives are easy to get in in many part of the world. Dear relations may be seen anywhere. But I don’t know any region of earth, where a brother like Lakshmana can be had". Such praises were possible only because of Urmila's support to her husband.
VAIRAGYAM
When Lakshman swooned in battle, Rama asked Hanuman to bring Sanjeevini plant. Hanuman then uprooted the entire mountain and carried to Lanka .But Bharatha saw Hanuman and shot at him, suspecting him as Rakshasa. Hanuman then said that he was taking the mountain to save Lakshmana from its herb as per Rama’s orders. Bharatha, immediately informed this to Urmila, Sumitra and Kausalya about this. Hanuman also conveyed this news to Urmila. But Urmila did not show any trace of fear or worry and said as Lakshman’s heart is filled with the name of Ram . So he will have a perfect sleep. Rama only may have pain or sorrow. There is no danger to Lakshmana and he will be safe for ever with the grace of Rama. Thus Urmila lived Vanaprastha life which caused Lakshmana later to kill even Indrajit. After 14 years, when Rama reinstated in throne, Sita only reminded Lakshmana to visit his wife urmila. When Lakshmana visited Urmila, she mistook him as somebody else. Later Lakshman cleared her doubt and both joined together. Urmila told as how could Ravana kidnap Sita, when a man like Lakshman courageous as a lion was present. Thus Urmila stood as example of Sthithapragnar.
VAINAVAM
The best among Vaishnava doctrine of saranagathis is only of Lakshmana, because he was incarnation of Audi sesha. Dwaya mantra SrimanNarayana Saranou saranam prabathye , and Nammazhwar’s Agalagillen iraiumendru Alarmel mangai urai marba stress the presence of Lakshmi in any Saranagathi. Lakshmana has not requested Rama about his accompanying him, before Sita’s stern decision of joining him in forest. This is because Laksmana felt services to both Rama and Sita together is always good, similar to principle of srivaishnavites in surrendering to both Maha Lakshmi and MahaVihnu. Further his saranagathi , sacrificing all pleasures in Ayodhya in Royal family, and leaving newly married Urmila for 14 years is therefore considered as most significant one. Urmila is therefore considered as person instrumental for Saranagathi tatwam.

SRIVAISHN AVISM
An early start Human beings tend to hold on to grievances and hurt feelings, and are unwilling to let go of negative thoughts. Insults, real and imagined, linger long in our
minds. All of these are forgettable and should be forgotten, said Ilampirai Manimaran.
It is because our minds are so full of negative thoughts that we cannot think of the more important things in life.
Is it not more important to think of God, and to think of what great saints
such as the Azhvars have said, than to let our minds dwell on negative things?
But how does one get rid of needless thoughts? To start thinking of God
would be a good beginning. Once one gets started, then thoughts of God will slowly fill our minds, displacing all the unnecessary ruminations. Just as light dispels darkness, focus on Narayana rids our minds of darkness and cleanses our minds.
A man in pain groans, even if he has taken medicines and even when his relatives are waiting on him hand and foot. It is not out of a desire to fuss that he does so. It is because the groaning itself seems to offer him some relief from the pain. We are all groaning under the weight of our sins, and
in this sense we are all sick persons.
But what is the treatment for this sickness of mankind? There is only one cure — worshipping Lord Narayana. And one should not wait until old age to seek treatment for this sickness. Often, we put off worship of God,
thinking we have all the time in the world, and that we can as well resort to worship when we are old.
But we should take a leaf out of the ant’s book. The ant knows that it
cannot gather food when it rains. So it works extra hard during summer, to gather and store food, which will come in useful once winter sets in.
When we are old, we may not be in a position to worship or even think of God. So we must worship the Lord while we still can.
This is the thought that is expressed by Periazhvar, when he says that he will be unable to think of Lord Narayana when he is overwhelmed by old age, and that he therefore offers his prayers to Him now.
