2021

Dear Friends:

This past year was extraordinary. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly had an impact on everyone - changing the way we handle day-to-day activities from work to school to staying connected to family and friends. One thing that did not change was the support of our Asbury Donors!

THANK YOU to our Board of Directors, Residents, Families, Friends, and Staff for continuing to support Asbury’s Benevolent Care, Spiritual Life, and Campus & Community Outreach programs despite the uncertainty of this past year. With your assistance, over $800,000 was raised!

Please take a moment and enjoy this issue of Seasons as we acknowledge our donors, highlight campus upgrades and improvements, and share ways to support our mission.

We are excited and optimistic as we begin 2021 and hope you will consider being a part of our continued success by including Asbury in your charitable plans this year!

Sincerely,

Roger L. Davis, Jr. RN, NHA, MHA Executive Director

Welcome

Dollars at WorkThrough our UPMC Senior Communities affiliation and Asbury Donors, various renovations and improvements have been made possible throughout the campus, such as:

Family Hospice offices have been relocated to Asbury Heights.

Donors helped make iPads available to our Residents for virtual visits with children and grandchildren near and far. They are also extensively used for virtual medical appointments.

Our Main Dining Room received a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, and vinyl flooring.

Four new Luxury Garden Apartments have been constructed and feature stainless steel appliances and easy access to many of Asbury’s common areas.

Leaving a Legacy We are fortunate to have donors who remember Asbury Heights in their legacy planning by naming our organization in their will, or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or a charitable gift annuity.

By making these arrangements, these individuals are a part of our 1908 Society and provide funding for Benevolent Care, Spiritual Life and environmental and programmatic improvements right here at Asbury all without using current resources.

It’s an easy way to give, and your gift, large or small, is greatly appreciated! To learn more about becoming a 1908 Society Member or find out how to name Asbury as a beneficiary in your estate plans, contact Courtney Kartman at Asbury Foundation (412-571-5106 or [email protected]).

Already made plans? Let us know! It enables us to specifically apply your gift to our campus programs/projects that are near and dear to you.

Please join us in taking a moment to remember the following 1908 Society members whose thoughtful planning resulted in a bequest to Asbury Foundation in 2020:

Community SupportJessica Garda, owner of Jessica Garda Events, and over 100 supporters of her “Send a Smile” program (part of the national Adopt a Grandparent campaign) helped bring smiles to residents throughout our campus with colorful Balloon Buddies. The goal was to bring a little joy and encouragement to the residents after months of being separated from their loved ones. Support for this program came from seven different states!

The Mt. Lebanon Moms Network (MLMN) delivered dozens of cards for residents that were created by children from the community. The colorful cards, featuring jokes and encouraging messages, were displayed in the Post Office for all to see. MLMN and Mt. Lebanon Howard Hanna Office also delivered boxes of snacks to show appreciation to the staff.

Knowing they would not be able to visit our campus for a hands-on learning experience, students from Pitt’s School of Medicine sent letters to our Nursing Center residents with self-addressed stamped envelopes for responses.

Due to visitor restrictions, our volunteers were unable to enter our buildings. Because of this, longtime volunteer Katie Heiser was able to still donate her time at home to create dozens of cards for residents who may need a lift of their spirits.

As part of their annual wreath sale fundraiser, Spencer Family YMCA of Bethel Park encouraged their donors to “pay it forward,” allowing them to purchase a wreath for someone else. And realizing this year’s pandemic has been especially difficult for those residing in senior living communities, the organization decided to give a fresh wreath to every resident of Asbury Heights. That was 400 wreaths!

Pandemic Doesn’t Stop Donor Commitment! In 2020, our Board of Directors, Residents, Families, Friends, and Staff continued to generously provide their support to Asbury despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our donors focused their giving towards our Benevolent Care Program - a program that secures resources to assist Asbury Residents who can no longer pay full charges for their care and accommodations. It is with much gratitude that we say THANK YOU to these individuals.

Operation Warp Speed Now UnderwayIn early January, COVID-19 vaccines arrived on the Asbury campus, and we wasted no time administering them to residents and staff in accordance with Pennsylvania’s phased approach. More vaccine clinics were held in February and March. As others need the vaccine, it will be available to them.

Vaccination (especially of those vulnerable to more severe symptoms of the coronavirus) is a major step to ending the pandemic and another step closer to a brighter 2021. However, until the majority of the population is vaccinated, masking, hand washing, and physical distancing are still in effect.

Many aspects of the pandemic have evolved and improved greatly over the last year with various therapeutics and the development of effective vaccines. In the meantime, stay safe, stay vigilant, and stay healthy.

United WayIs your employer hosting a United Way campaign this year? If so, consider directing your support to Asbury Foundation. It’s easy to do! Simply, specify our Contributor Choice Code 308 when filling out your United Way pledge form. This will direct all or a portion of your United Way contribution to Asbury Foundation.
