SCORPION RACING PRODUCTS’ VISION

Scorpion Racing Products is the marketing and distribution company for the products that Scorpion Performance, Inc. manufactures. These are the highest quality products from the most technologically advanced tools and machines in the world. By utilizing today’s and tomorrow’s most sophisticated technology, Scorpion Performance is able to maintain its leadership role in producing the absolute finest precision parts. This technology also enables the company to achieve superior quality at economies of scale that make Scorpion Racing Products’ prices ultra-competitive. And the icing on the cake is the priceless advantage of once again being able to stamp “MADE IN USA” on these products!

Scorpion Performance has proven that its commitment to fully automated, robotically-controlled tooling, combined with its round-the-clock production capacity, effectively offsets the low wage advantage the Asian tigers rely on to attract U.S. business. To beat the Asians at their own game, Scorpion embraces the very latest robotically-controlled automation technology, then its engineers coax even greater productivity out of it – exceeding even the manufacturers’ specs. This productivity is a major marketing point for Scorpion Racing Products, and of course, faster manufacturing means faster distribution to customers.

Simply put, Scorpion Racing Products beats the competition by offering its customers superior quality that meets and beats Asian pricing and delivery schedules. Plus, while most U.S. competitors are locked into old machinery and traditional manufacturing of precision parts, Scorpion Racing Products benefits from Scorpion Performance’s commitment to updating and replacing its sophisticated tooling every three years.

The economic implications of Scorpion Racing Products’ ability to say “Made in America” The staggering trade imbalance the U.S. has worked its way into has reached precarious levels; most noteworthy in the disastrous devaluation of the dollar vs. most major world currencies. Much of this is the result of U.S. companies and marketers rushing to low-wage manufacturers, primarily in the Far East. The U.S. Auto industry is the No. 1 contributor to America’s trade imbalance despite the influx of foreign car manufacturers to set up assembly plants in this country. Computers are the No. 2 source of the nation’s reliance on offshore companies and workers.

And No. 3 is Motor Vehicle Parts.

Recently, 32% of all motor vehicle parts were purchased overseas, representing $71 billion of that year’s trade deficit. Given its automated efficiencies, Scorpion Performance and Scorpion Racing Products have found the secret to offsetting the low-wage advantage of the East. As a result, Scorpion Performance is manufacturing more and more orders that otherwise would have gone overseas, and Scorpion Racing Products is marketing and distributing those orders.

Through the use of technologically advanced manufacturing, strategic marketing and fast distribution, Scorpion Racing Products looks forward to continued growth for its American-made products. Scorpion Racing Products is proud to declare, “Made by Americans in the USA!”

Scorpion Technical Service Department

Should you encounter any issues with Scorpion products please call our Technical Service Department at 352-512-0800. Many issues can be easily solved over the phone, but if not, you will be advised to return your parts and will be issued a Return Goods Authorization (RGA) number. Write this number on the outside of your package and also include it with a detailed note regarding why you are returning your product. Please include your full name and daytime telephone number, along with your return address. This address must be an address that UPS can deliver to. Also include your receipt from where the parts were purchased, and the date of the purchase. Even though you phoned you must still include a note with the parts being returned. Failure to do this will only delay the processing of your claim.

VALVE SPRINGS

THE FINEST ALLOY STEEL RACING SPRINGS ON THE MARKET!Scorpion Racing Products now offers the absolute best high-tech Silicon, Nickel and Vanadium alloy valve springs including Beehive Springs, Drag Race Springs and Endurance Race Springs.

Features include:• Smaller diameters for minimal weight

• Increased valvetrain stability

• Optimized wire for increased natural frequency

• Reduced end sizes for low moving mass

• Variable pitch for reduced coil surging and higher RPM

• Advanced alloy material specifically designed for racing

Four important reasons to use Scorpion Racing Products valve springs:

1. Material: We use only the world’s finest valve spring material with high alloy content of Silicon, Nickel and Vanadium. All the wire used is called Superclean. This means it is processed so that any inclusions that can cause spring failures are minimized.

2. Quality Inspection: The wire is specially inspected with double eddy current testing that looks for defects on the surface of the wire. Increased inspection levels ensure the metal is in the best possible condition prior to making springs.

3. Processing: All our springs are produced on the latest CNC spring making equipment. The springs are coiled with very specific pitch profiles to get the loads and rates that are correct for the engine. Grinding is CNC-controlled for tight coil bind heights to allow for running the springs close to coil bind.

The springs get a sophisticated shot-peen process, which is verified by an X-ray diffraction machine. This machine measures the atomic spacing of the metallic crystalline structure to ensure we have proper residual stresses within the springs. This is critical for spring performance and survival under extreme conditions.

Some springs are nitrided and nano-peen surface enhanced. This provides the ultimate in spring surface preparation for extreme RPM with aggressive camshaft profiles.

4. Design: All of our spring designs are based on the data from a Spintron machine. We fine-tune the loads, rate, coil spacing, wire size and frequencies to get extremely good valve control yet still have safe springs that will not fail.

ENDURANCE VALVE SPRINGS LOAD REFERENCE CHART

22

Page 24: SRP Catalog 7-19-11

It is very important to determine proper pushrod length. Improper pushrod length can cause a number of problems including excessive valve guide wear, lessened valve lift, valve stem side thrust, coil bind, improper valve to piston clearance and also rocker arm to retainer interference (in some cases lash caps can be used to help correct rocker arm to retainer clearance problems).

Check the radius of the lifter receiver cup and rocker arm cup/ball before ordering to help prevent mistakes. Improper ordering may result in parts failure. Watch for variations from stock radius in aftermarket lifters.

Make sure significant oil volume reaches the rocker arm end of the pushrod to help prevent galling due to excessive heat generation and lack of lubrication. Oil restriction in the engine block is not normally recommended.

When possible, try to use larger diameter pushrods to spread out the load and lower the stress on the tube. This will help lessen pushrod deflection. Heavy wall tubing is a good idea also, to minimize compression. Many problems occur when a pushrod is inadequate for the application.

In high RPM applications large diameter pushrods are a must for the serious racers. Tapered designs help to dampen harmonics in the valvetrain; extended valve spring life and increased usable RPM will usually be noticed.

Do not allow overclearancing for the pushrod. This may cause the pushrod to move around or deflect more than needed. Clearance of .010 at the closest point, wherever that may be during its complete cycle is sufficient. The cylinder head and engine block can often be utilized like a big guide plate and dampening device, which stabilizes the pushrod. Just make sure that there are no interference problems when turning the engine over on the engine stand.

Tapered pushrods should not be used in guide plate applications. Improper clearance and interference problems are sure to occur. Use only straight tube pushrods, specifically surface hardened for guide plate use in this application.

If you are using a tool steel rocker arm adjusting screw, it is almost always suggested that a tool steel pushrod tip be used at the rocker arm end. This will ensure proper compatibility.

Note: When using Scorpion Racing Products pushrods, adjustments to valve/cam timing, valve to piston clearance and fuel curve may be required. Pushrods are priced and shipped in sets of eight (8).

When determining the correct pushrod length, Scorpion Racing Products requests that you order your pushrods in the following manner:1) Ball/Ball design pushrods are to be ordered by overall length measurement. (The standard flat diameter on the ends of the pushrod is .100)2) Ball/Cup design pushrods are to be ordered by the effective length. This length is measured from the bottom of the cup radius to the tip of the ball. Overall length can also be given but tell us how deep the cup depth is.

Note: When ordering Ball/Cup pushrods make sure that you explain how you came up with the measurement.

Pushrod Tip Styles: (If oil restriction is desired it must be at the Rocker Arm end only.) Designate “R” after the end type. All tips are available with or without oil holes.

PRECISION & PROTECTION

Anodize Inc. offers the highest possible precision for Mili-tary Spec Anodizing, Type II Anodizing, Type III Hardcoat Anodizing and Bright Dip Anodizing. Conventional coat-ings are 0.1 to 1.0 mils thick and are mostly transparent, but may be colored. Color can add new luster and eye-appeal to products, creating an almost jewel-like effect.

Anodizing is not necessarily a “simple” process. In addition to special machinery, it requires a good knowledge of chemistry. The anodizing process employs electrolytic oxidation of a metal’s surface to produce a protective oxide coating. Anodizing will protect metal objects by making their surface much harder. For aluminum, aluminum oxide is grown out of the surface and then becomes aluminum hydrate, which is extremely hard and resistant to corrosion and abrasion.

MIL-A-8625 ANODIZING

MIL-A-8625 is the military specification for six types and two classes of electrolytically formed anodic coatings on aluminum and aluminum alloys for non-architectural application.

TYPE II ANODIZING

Type II is conventional anodizing produced in a sulfurlc acid bath. This method is performed at room temperature and creates an anodized layer of .0002” to .001”, half of which is grown into the surface and half out of the surface. Anodized metal objects will become slightly larger by about .0005”.

Type ll Anodizing Advantages:• Corrosion resistance comparable to stainless steel• Increased surface hardness and scratch resistance• Non-conductive up to 1000 Volts• Aesthetics from many color choices• Colors remain durable, vibrant and fade resistant• An excellent base for a wide range of finishing options - clear coat, paint, graphic applications, etc.

TYPE III HARDCOAT ANODIZING

Type III Hardcoat Anodizing is done in an electrolytic solution of sulfuric acid at approximately 32°F and a current density of 23 to 37 Amps per square foot. The process will run for 20 to 120 minutes depending on the alloy used and desired coating thickness that can reach .002”. Type III hardcoat anodized surfaces can typically only be dyed black or dark green due to the denser pore size.

Type lll Anodizing Advantages:• Corrosion resistance - passes 1000 HR 5% salt spray test• Electrical insulation equivalent to glass or porcelain• Prevents galvanic reaction - can be used with steel, copper, brass, etc.• Extreme hardness - C60-C70 Rockwell scale• High operating temperatures up to 932°F (500°C) • Durability - 10 times more durable than unanodized aluminum

• Excellent lubricity - hardcoated parts may run against each other without lubrication in many applications

BRIGHT DIP ANODIZING

Bright Dip Anodizing is a chemical process that brightens aluminum and does not leave deposits on the surface of the metal. Bright Dip produces a high electro-polish finish similar to the quality of plating. The degree of brightness is dependent on the type of alloy, as well as the surface finish of the object. Some alloys can attain a very reflective, mirror-type finish.

MIRROR POLISHING

Mirror Polishing is required by medical equipment manufacturers and is essential for finishing surgical instruments. This process is the ultimate extra step that reduces the size of pores in metal, thereby minimizing the transmission of germs and other bodily residues by the instruments themselves. Mirror polishing is also used by many other manufacturers who require a high level of smoothness with a minimum amount of porosity. This process helps metal parts meet critical tolerances required in today’s high-tech machinery. When a mirror-polished item is anodized as well, the result is a thing of beauty!

LASER ETCHING

Laser Etching assures a “Lasting Impression.” A company’s unique logo, name or part numbers can be permanently laser-etched on every item produced, which increases brand identity. Due to the growing amount of competition in many industries, especially from overseas, brand identity is growing in importance to many manufacturers. Call Anodize Inc. today for all your anodizing, mirror polishing and laser etching needs.

The way I see it …

By Rob Stopanio,Founder, Scorpion Performance, Inc. and Scorpion Racing Products

Do You Buy Asian... or American?

Frankly, the notion that you can buy better auto parts for less money in China is pure hogwash. It’s oriental

voodoo! At least where the products manufactured by Scorpion Performance and distributed by Scorpion

Racing Products are concerned.

Scorpion has beat the Asian tigers at their own game. And we’ve done it by using the newest robotically-

operated automated machine tools available today. This has greatly increased our capacity for turning out

precision parts 24 hours a day – 7 days a week.

For many years now, Scorpion has been manufacturing superior quality Rocker Arms and related valve train

parts for our company and a growing list of other companies that market private label lines. These companies

know Scorpion’s products absolutely exceed Asian quality and are very competitive with Asian prices. Plus, we

are much faster, do not require the long lead-time, and there’s no need for the intervention of foreign buying

offices and their agents. If there’s a problem – call Scorpion – not some broker in Shanghai where it’s no doubt

3:00 AM.

And here’s more good news: Scorpion now manufacturers an expanded product line including lifters, valves,

valve springs, pushrods, fuel rail kits, throttle bodies, fuel pump pushrods and more! Plus, our anodizing, mirror

polishing and laser etching services are second to none.

Don’t settle for imported junk. Buy American - buy Scorpion Racing Products.

Scorpion’s New Ocala, Florida Facility Up and Running at Full Capacity

Scorpion’s new manufacturing complex consists of three buildings totaling over 95,000 square feet on a

23-acre site in Ocala, Florida. The new plant is now fully operational and the company is working toward tripling

its previous output capacity. This means that Scorpion can now fulfill customer orders with the same top quality

precision products even faster than before.

Scorpion’s Ocala facility provides new efficiencies in production because it accommodates several robotically-

controlled “tool families” arranged in a very logical and productive sequence. In addition, building number

one’s high ceiling allows for a future overhead crane system, which will be a major advantage.

Other economic advantages of the Ocala complex include lower costs of real estate, taxes and insurance,

which all contribute to Scorpion’s determination to maintain its competitive pricing without any sacrifice in

service or product quality. But the icing on the cake is the ability to continue to put “Made in the USA” on all

Scorpion products!

Two more manufacturing buildings are scheduled to be built on the property.

Valve Adjustment Made Simple

Whether it’s a Chevy, Ford, Pontiac or Oldsmobile with 4, 6 or 8 cylinders, or some other foreign or domestic vehicle, follow these directions closely and valve adjustment can be very simple.

New or used, you MUST check to see if the pushrods are bent. Using a piece of flat glass, roll one pushrod at a time across the flat surface to see if it rolls smooth. If it is bent you will know it and change if necessary. Heavy wall pushrods must be used for high spring pressures.

Wash the pushrods with soap and hot water, then air blow dry thoroughly. Dry inside and out. Hold all pushrod ends to a light to inspect holes and make sure they are completely clear.

Lube the lifter side of the pushrods with molylube. Also lube guide plate where pushrods will rub.

Now install the pushrods through the guide plate into lifter sockets. To make sure you are in the center of each lifter, spin pushrod with your fingers pressing lightly. It will find the middle easily. Now lube top of pushrods with molylube.

Now it’s time to install your new Scorpion Rockers. Make sure they have been final washed. Just wipe with a clean lint-free rag and lube the trunnion with any thin motor oil. Also lube the pushrod cup with a generous amount of molylube. Now make sure the flat surface of the trunnion is facing up. Next, set the rocker over oiled rocker stud. Make sure the pushrod is in center of pushrod cup by lightly pressing on rocker and spinning pushrod. Install all rockers the exact same way.

NOTE: Don’t worry about the lobes that are up and do not rotate engine. This action can result in bending pushrods. DON’T ROTATE YET.

Now flood the top of stud and trunnion with motor oil before screwing polylock down. DO NOT TIGHTEN. Spin polylock down with your fingers until pushrod has no lash, but will still spin with your fingers. Repeat until all rockers are installed.

Take spark plugs out of head so you are not fighting compression. Then, with a long ratchet and a socket to fit balancer bolt, rotate in engine direction one turn at a time. This will loosen some of the rocker. With your fingers tighten polylocks until there’s no lash, checking that pushrods still spin. Repeat exactly over and over until all rockers are down with no lash. NOTE: As you take lash out of loose rocker arms some of the valves will start opening. This is okay.

Now it’s time to adjust the valves. The most important thing is to do one cylinder at a time starting at front and working your way around. Rotate in normal engine direction. When the exhaust valve starts to open, adjust intake valve. When the intake valve opens and starts to close, adjust exhaust valve.

FOR HYDRAULIC CAMS AND HYDRAULIC ROLLER CAMS

Example: When the exhaust valve just starts to open on #1 Cylinder, adjust #1 intake valve by loosening polylock slightly while spinning pushrod, until you feel lash in the rocker arm. Spin polylock down until you feel lash go away and now feel the pushrod snug up a little while you’re spinning it. This is known as 0 lash. Now place offset 5/8 box wrench on polylock facing exhaust side of head at 6 o’clock position. Turn wrench to the 3 o’clock position. Now use T-handle allen wrench and screw the set screw down against the top of stud firmly. Then bump wrench slightly tighter to lock set screw. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! This will split the polylock. You don’t need much to lock set screw to stud. After adjusting put a magic marker slash across top of rocker to tell you it has been done. Now rotate engine until intake valve opens and just starts to close and repeat adjustment on #1 exhaust valve (Note: One cylinder at a time). Repeat one cylinder at a time until complete engine is finished.

Page 33: SRP Catalog 7-19-11

Now it’s time to double check starting at #1 cylinder. When exhaust starts to open check intake. New hydraulic lifters won’t be pumped up yet, so you should be able to spin pushrod with some resistance. Think of a hydrau-lic lifter as a shock absorber, and you want to be in the middle of it. You will be able to push the lifter plunger to the bottom of the lifter until you have oil pressure and then it becomes solid. You should put a 2nd mark on top of the rocker so you know it has been double checked. All rockers that are 100% finished being adjusted should have a magic marker X on them. One mark for 1st adjustment, 2nd mark for final checked.

ADJUSTING VALVES ON SOLID LIFTER OR ROLLER CAMS

The most important thing to know is to adjust one cylinder at a time, starting at #1, and work your way around. Rotate in normal engine direction. When the exhaust valve starts to open on #1 cylinder, adjust intake valve. When the intake valve opens and starts to close, adjust #1 exhaust valve.

Example: When exhaust valve starts to open on #1 cylinder, adjust #1 intake valve by loosening polylock slightly while spinning pushrod until you feel lash in the rocker. Now spin polylock down until you feel the lash go away. You will feel the pushrod snug up a little while you’re spinning it. This is known as 0 lash. Place offset 5/8 box wrench on polylock. Loosen polylock slightly while sliding feeler gauge in-between roller and tip of valve (See cam card for lash spec).

Spin polylock down against feeler gauge. Now use a T-handle allen wrench and screw the set screw down against the top of stud firmly, then bump wrench slightly tighter to lock set screw. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! This will split polylock. You don’t need much pressure to lock set screw to stud. After adjusting put a magic marker slash across top of the rocker to tell you it has been done, then rotate engine until intake valve on #1 cylinder opens and starts to close. Now adjust #1 exhaust valve. Repeat same valve adjust procedure ONE CYLINDER AT A TIME. Repeat one cylinder at a time until complete engine is finished.

Now it’s time to double check. Starting at #1 cylinder, repeat valve adjustment procedure. When exhaust valve starts to open, check #1 intake with feeler gauge. After removing feeler gauge, spin push rod. This guarantees nothing is rubbing the pushrod. You should put a 2nd mark on top of rocker so you will know it has been double checked. All rockers that are 100% finished being adjusted should have a magic marker X on them. One mark for 1st adjustment, 2nd mark for final check.
