Year 8 Week commencing 6th July 2020

Lesson Details

Please check your timetable using your planner or use GO4schools to establish what lessons you would be studying on each day this week. You

will then need to refer to the table below for your scheduled subject and the set of instructions that have been given to you by your teacher. If you

have any queries regarding this information, please see the contact information above.

Subject

**Subject Details**

English Task 1: Reading Continue reading Oliver Twist up to the end of chapter 50. If you have chosen a different book to read, you should read approximately 30 pages (stop at the end of a chapter). If you don’t have a book to read at home, try the project Gutenberg website for children’s classics such as Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book or Grimm’s Fairy Tales. You can also download audio books for free at Amazon Audible. Task 2: Research For the final weeks of term, we are going to look in detail at the opening to a famous dystopian story– Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is an allegorical novella.

Look up the words allegory and novella. What do they mean? The novella is based on the events of the Russian Revolution, and the people involved. To help you to understand the story, research the Russian Revolution.

What happened?

When did it happen?

Why did it happen?

Who was involved?

Page 6: SRPA Curriculum – Y8 · o Home > Students > Beginner Section > Russian > Досуг > Спорт на открытом воздухе (outdoor sport) o Home > Students > Beginner

6

What do we know about the people who were involved? (Make sure you have some notes on Tsar Nicholas, Joseph Stalin and Leo Trotsky.)

You can use the internet to complete your research. Some websites go into far more detail than you need. A good place to look is the CBBC Newsround page here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/41904621 You can write up your research in any way you choose – as a poster, in paragraphs, as bullet point notes, etc. Task 3: Predict There are a lot of characters in the novella Animal Farm, and many of them have allegorical links to people who were involved in the Russian Revolution. Mr Jones - Mr Jones is a farmer, and the owner of Manor Farm. He represents the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov (Nicholas II) Napoleon – Napoleon is a pig who lives on Manor Farm. He represents Joseph Stalin, the second leader of the Soviet Union. Snowball – Snowball is a pig who lives on Manor Farm. Snowball represents Leo Trotsky. Trotsky was one of the original revolutionaries.

Based on what you know about Tsar Nicholas, Stalin and Trotsky from your research, write a prediction for what you think will happen to the characters Mr Jones, Napoleon and Snowball in the story Animal Farm. Are they all going to be friends? Or enemies? How might they behave towards one another? What sort of personalities might they have?

Start each prediction by writing:

I predict that Mr Jones will be... I predict that Napoleon will be...

VIA DIVERSA VITA UNA – ONE LIFE, MANY PATHS

7

I predict that Snowball will be... You aren’t expected to make accurate predictions – it doesn’t matter if your predictions turn out to be wrong. Just try to use your research into those involved in the Russian Revolution to make sensible guesses about what you think the characters in the novella will be like. Email your predictions to your teacher. If you were taught by Miss Sewell, Mrs Martini or Mrs Pindar, please email your work to Miss Court at [email protected].

Maths Before next week you will receive an email from your class teacher providing personalised analysis from the feedback tasks if completed. Also attached to the email will be instructions explaining how you can access the new interactive questions for each of your own improvement topics on MathsWatch. This means for the next two weeks you will answer personalised questions instead of doing a generic task. Please work through your list of improvement topics from your Mathswatch feedback. Answers will be automatically marked as before. Please watch the video and attempt the interactive questions related to each video. You should aim to complete one video, plus the supporting set of interactive questions, for each lesson of Mathematics on your timetable. If you require support please email your class teacher as before. Challenge tasks will be set if you require them. If you did not attempt the feedback tasks by the deadline, you will find that we have now re opened these tasks. Please complete these assessments so that we can feedback to you. Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact myself on [email protected] or Miss Wells on [email protected].

Science To access your Science work for weeks 13 and 14, please go to FROG>Science Subject Site>Year 8>Home Learning. Here you will find your Research Topic Pack. This Topic Pack will last for the final two weeks of term. If you have any issues please contact your Science teacher or Miss Griffiths ([email protected])

French Les Jeux Olympiques This summer would have seen the 2020 Olympics take place, so this week we’re going to look at some French-speaking Olympic athletes. Read the two factsheets about Renaud Lavillenie and Teddy Riner (on Frog) and then answer the questions about them. You can type your answers onto the worksheet and email it to your teacher. Extension: Try researching another French-speaking athlete and creating a factsheet in French similar to those on Frog. Give basic information about the athlete.

Spanish Los Juegos Olímpicos de 2016 This summer would have seen the 2020 Olympics take place, so this week we’re going to look at some information about the last Olympics, which took place in Brazil. Read the PowerPoint about the 2016 Paralympics in Rio and try to answer the questions at the end. You can type your answers on an email to your teacher for House Points. Extension: Download the factsheet and fill it in about an Paralympian of your choice. Extra points if you manage it all in Spanish.

Geography Australia Week 8 – Tourism Week 2: Plan a Trip You are going to spend the last two weeks of term planning a trip to Australia. The first part of it will need to include the following: 1. Travel – find flights for next Summer holidays to an Australian airport of your preference and

screen shot their itinerary 2. Cities to visit – use Google Maps to work out the distance between 3 or 4 Australian cities and

provide a map of the route between them (either a Google Maps screenshot or sketch map would be amazing)

3. Climate – what will the weather be like during summer for these places – include a climate graph for the areas you would visit.

You can present this however you like – it could be a PowerPoint presentation or a booklet, or a poster, etc. You may complete the work in your book (complete all work on a new page), do not forget to include the title and date. Otherwise, keep your work together in a folder or file. If you complete this work on the computer you may wish to send it into your Geography teacher via email – [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected]

Extension: include costings of the above, including car hire for the duration.

Design and Technology

The best designs will win points for your house The brief You should construct a chair that you can sit on using only cardboard. You can not use any glue, tape or other fixing materials (e.g staples)

Materials and Equipment

Cardboard

Cutting instruments (scissors) – Support from adult

Rulers

Pencils Method

1. Create some sketches and ideas to show how the chair will look and how it will be constructed. 2. When you are designing how you will make the chair, consider using strong shapes, spirals,

tubes, cones, eggs. When thinking about joining you could use interlocking sheets; or even using strips of card like sewing thread!

3. Use the materials to create a chair made from cardboard. 4. If, when you make the chair, your design doesn’t work, think about what went wrong; evaluate

redesign and then remake. When designing your cardboard chair can you think about forces acting on it?

Design development suggestions

What happens if you change the weight on the chair?

What happens if you use less material?

Can you make the chair with fewer legs?

Can you make the chair from one piece of material?
