National Numeracy Day- 13th May

This week is a time to celebrate National Numeracy Day, which is a day all about recognising that numbers

play a big part in all our lives and helping people sharpen their skills and build their confidence.

Being better with numbers isn’t a special talent, it’s something we can all learn. On 13 May National Numeracy are running a virtual festival which you can get involved in to help improve your numeracy through a day of online events.

We would like to celebrate the importance of numeracy all week. Along with your subject tasks we would love you to try and get involved in some of the numeracy challenges below…

Improve your everyday maths with the National Numeracy Challenge

The National Numeracy Challenge is a free website to help you check and improve your numeracy - the maths you use in daily life! It only takes

around ten minutes to check your skills, videos to show that however you feel about maths, you’re not alone, and increased flexibility, so that you

can choose what you want to do.

Year 9 Week commencing 11th May 2020

Lesson Details

Due to the fact you have not been timetabled for your GCSE options yet, please use the below schedule as guidance for your

weekly studies. You will then need to refer to the subject table for the set of instructions that have been given to you by your

teacher. If you have any queries regarding this information, please see the contact information above.

Subject

**Subject Details**

GCSE CORE SUBJECTS English Reading: Spend an hour reading this week. You can continue with your reading of Oliver Twist, or with any book you have chosen from home.

Free audio books are available to download on Amazon Audible if you have run out of books to read - email your English teacher for some suggestions if you need to. GCSE Speaking assessment - Using your research from last week, write a first draft of your speech. Aim for between 4 and 5 minutes of speech. Read it out loud when you have written it and time how long it takes to read - you will be surprised how much you need to say to fill 5 minutes. If you are using a PowerPoint to prompt you, plan the order of your speech on it - perhaps use one slide for each paragraph of your speech and include either a title, some bullet point notes or an image which will help you remember what to say. DON’T copy your whole speech onto a PowerPoint – reading from this isn’t a presentation and is really boring for your listeners. Look on BBC Bitesize for advice on speech writing - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv7fqp3/articles/z4w96v4 Please email the first draft of your speech to your class teacher. If you are being taught by Mrs Pindar, Mrs Martini or Miss Sewell, please send your work to Mr Chetwynd: [email protected].
