Super Sky designed, manufactured and installed the custom skylight on the new 55,000 square foot Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness facility, “The Center,”at Gettysburg College. The Center earned the Gold Level Certification of the U.S. GreenBuilding Council’s LEED® System (NC 2.2).

The 80 foot tower measures 50 feet along each side of the base. The skylight shape is based on a triangular footprint twisted approximately 15 degrees at each level. The resulting geometry creates 17 triangular facets that are glazed with 230 pattern cut lites of glass. Each facet is divided into a five by five grid that is aligned with all adjacent facets.

The complex array of grid lines and complex faceted geometry, required the skylight frame and steel support structure to be coordinated in 3D modeling programs. Super Sky carried this modeling work furtherwith extensive CAD modeling of all framing components, glass and metal panels. CNC fabrication of virtually all material, carefully controlled assembly and installation were then guided with information from thecomprehensive CAD models.

Hurricane/Impact Rated Systems

Super Sky currently holds four Dade CountyNOA’s (Notice of Acceptance) for impact ratedskylight systems. These products are requirednot only in Dade County, Florida, but in most of Florida, and virtually every coastal area fromTexas to Maine, when a skylight is part of thebuilding envelope.

Impact rated products are required in statesgoverned by the IBC, when a project is withinone mile of the coast and the design wind speed is 110 mph or higher. They are also required in any area where the wind speed is 120 mph or higher, even if the job is notwithin one mile of the coast.

A skylight located higher than 30 feet abovegrade would require a small missile impactrated system. If the skylight is located 30 feet or below in elevation, then large missile impact requirements would apply.

Super Sky’s Polycarbonate Systems consists of THE EDGE®,

EDGE MAX® and Standing Seam (shown on pages 28-29). These

systems can be utilized for both sloped (minimum 2:12) and

vertical applications.

THE EDGE® is a single layer skin system that mounts directly on

steel supporting structures. THE EDGE® system is ideal for smaller

spanning skylights, canopies, walkway covers and clearstory

glazing. If a larger spanning system is required, Super Sky’s

EDGE® Hybrid with structural members is the solution.

THE EDGE MAX® is a double layer system that has the same

features and benefits as THE EDGE®, but with a flush appearance

on both the inside and outside, offering a more aesthetic look.

THE EDGE MAX® has higher insulation values and improved

shading properties.

Lumira™ aerogel, formerly Nanogel® aerogel, is an insulating, light diffusing translucent materialmanufactured by Cabot Corporation.

Lumira™ aerogel, sometimes called “frozen smoke,”aerogel, is the lightest and best insulating solid in the world. Lumira aerogel is a hydrophobic aerogelproduced as particles.
