LIFE IN OUR PARISH Death has again touched our parish family. Tom Roach and Joan Komar and Dale Holcomb’s mother, Sally died last week. Responding to the reality of death among us we have our Ministry of Consolation and Stephen Min-isters as well as our Bereavement Dinners after the fu-neral. Sometimes all we can do is just be there for our friends and fellow parishioners as grief challenges us in our own families and in our parish family. We are a people of hope. But we certainly don’t like what death does to those we love. As Catholics and Christians we are continually reminded that we shall gather together again on the other side of life as we pray from this side for the eternal rest for our departed... I urge you to make our Parish Picnic a priority. It’s on Saturday, July 21 at Mariapoch Shrine. We begin with Mass at 5:00pm in the outdoor chapel. (There is no 5pm Mass at Park-man or 6:30pm at Middlefield). There is a picnic sup-per in the pavilion followed by entertainment, music and games. It’s simple and it’s fun. There’s a lot of good conversation and visiting. It’s a low-key picnic that is

enjoyable for all. Oh, yes, Ron, the Rocket Man (no, not THAT Rocket Man!) will give thrilling, exciting rides to the amusement of our Amish neighbors. Don’t miss the picnic this year!...Our Finance Council will meet July 19 to formulate our budgets for the new fiscal year. We are expected to present a proposed budget taking into ac-count all our ordinary expenses. We set a budget and do our best to live by it. You know from managing your own household that it is important to live within your means. As a parish, we have to accept this same reality. We stretch and strain to reduce costs wherever possible so we have a little more flexibility in other areas. We have been sav-ing toward paving the parking lot in Parkman for sever-al years. The parish Finance Council thought that, thanks to our fundraising by a small core group and thanks also for the many ways we struggle to keep down our expenses, we can finally do it. At the same time, an expenditure for a Youth Minister (rather than a volunteer) was deemed inadvisable for now.

“Travel light and show

you rely on God” “When Jesus sent the dis-ciples out for some in-service training, he told them to take nothing for their journey. They were told to travel light and rely on God and the goodness of his people; this will make them free. “Jesus’ words were ad-dressed not just to his disci-ples, not just to the clergy, but to all Christians. All of us are the church. All of us, by our lives, are called to proclaim the ‘good news’ of Jesus Christ. All of us are called to follow Christ. This means loving God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. “So what does Jesus really mean when he tells us to travel light and rely on God? He says it is all right to make money and enjoy the good things of this world. God is glad when we’re comfortable and happy. But we do not find our whole identity in the things we own. Christianity tells us to love people and use the things we own. Our present consumer culture, at its worst, tells us to love things and use people. “So let’s take Jesus’ words to heart. Let’s not measure. He tells us to not measure our worth by how much we own. When we seek meaning in our lives, we have to look beyond what we own and consume. Our deepest satis-faction must come not from possessions but from the nobility of our lives, from the quality of our relationships. In the end, nothing less will satisfy us. That’s what Jesus told his disciples and today tells us to look for happiness in all the right places. How many people among our family and friends don’t have a clue? “ (James DiGiacomo, S.J.)

“IT’S A MATTER OF LIFE...” You do not have to be Catholic (or even religious) to know that medical and scientific evidence confirms that what grows in a mother's womb is a new, distinct human being. Moreover, everyone can understand that each human being----without discrimination----merits dignity and respect. At the very least respecting human life must exclude the deliberate and direct destruction of life---- and that is exactly what abortion is.

MAKE THE FEST THE HIGHLIGHT OF SUMMER Every year after The FEST we receive dozens of emails from individuals telling us how much they enjoyed our annual Catholic Family FESTival and how it was the ‘highlight’ of their summer. Don’t miss out on Sunday, August 5th as we come together for The FEST from 12 until 10 pm at the CPL (28700 Euclid Avenue). Come hear great music (We are Messengers, Mandisa, Big Daddy Weave, and TobyMac) along with great activities and displays. Check out the Marc’s Mom’s Relaxation Station with over 250,000 give away items. Dads can spend time in the Man Cave to learn about being a man of faith. It’s the perfect family day. There’s plenty of parking and affordable food (thanks to Executive Caterers and Marc’s). It’s all FREE. Go to: www.theFEST.us for details, parking instructions, and a complete schedule of the day. On July 22, the Chardon chapter of LIFE Runners will be offering a Run/Walk to support Birthright Geauga, Inc. Birthright’s mission and philosophy is to offer free, non-judgmental, confidential help to pregnant girls, women, and families from an understanding staff of volunteers, who provide tangible, loving support. We’re making this event a “Baby Shower” too! Donations of “Baby Shower Gifts” are greatly appreciated on race day! To become a sponsor, go to: https://itsababy.racedirector.com/sponsorship, or call Birthright Geauga at 440-286-9711. DEADLINE FOR PARISH FAMILY RAFFLE TICKETS: July 31.
