QUOTE OF THE

DAYClosing of the Muslim mind is a global development

A Hindu mob in Dadri, just outside Delhi, broke into 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq’s home last month, accused him of eating and storing beef be-fore beating him to death. This year, Bangladeshis have been killing secular bloggers “for offering in-sult to Islam”, before escalating to killing foreign-ers and flagging the presence of the Islamic State in the country — a Japanese and an Italian were sac-rificed so that “hardliners who have been shut out of the political mainstream”, according to experts, could be appeased. Australia cancelled its cricket tour to signal what the world thinks of Bangladesh now. Pakistan is already a cricket pariah because of terrorism. Pakistan has been punished. Its Islamis-ation under General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law in the 1970-’80s transformed it into a jihadi state until its institutions couldn’t protect its people any more. This change coincided with the changing Muslim mind in South Asia and the Middle East. After the breakup of 1971, Bangladesh and Pakistan chose secular-democratic governments. Leaders of both governments were killed and the generals took over, strangely aping each other: Even the Islamis-ing amendment in their constitutions had to be the eighth amendment! That India was bent on join-ing the Islamist bandwagon was noted by Pakistani poet Fahmida Riaz, who stayed on in India after attending a mushaira in 1981 to avoid the generals’ wrath — only to be called an Indian spy by the Mus-lim League government in Islamabad. She wrote in Urdu, “tum bilkul hum jaise niklay (You turned out to be just like us!/ Where were you hiding all this time, buddy?/ That stupidity, that ignorance/ We wallowed in for a century/ Look, it arrived at your shores too!)” Then Sri Lanka joined in with its ethnic-based violence, to which its Tamils respond-ed with such original mayhem that al-Qaeda had to adopt its novel technique of killing. A Tamil sui-cide-bomber in India took the life of ex-prime min-ister Rajiv Gandhi. Today, Colombo faces a tough job in getting back to normal while religious tem-peratures still run high. Its next-door neighbour and a member of Saarc, the Maldives, a sinking bunch of islands, has succumbed to religion too, impris-oning its secular former president and sending out its madrassa-trained youth as Islamic State terror-ists. The Saarc member in the northeast of South Asia, Afghanistan, is more primal and Hobbesian, spreading its savagery downwards into Pakistan.

“Religion cannot be the basis of a state. For instance, in a large number of Arab countries, Islam is the religion. But on the basis of religion the Arab countries have not converged into one state.” - President Pranab Mukherjee insisted religion should

not be the basis for formation of a state, as this has never been successful.

One of the most cele-brated actors in the Hin-di Film industry, Shah Rukh Khan is all heart when it comes to words. He has a way with them and the sheer enormity of experiences he has had in his Bollywood journey transform them into pearls of wisdom. SRK was invited to be-stow these pearls on the students of the Univer-sity of Edinburgh, UK, on Thursday (October 15) and as expected, King Khan held the au-dience in awe with his ‘life lessons’. And gave a whole lot of reasons as to why he still rules the bylanes of Bolly-wood. Shah Rukh Khan was presented with the degree of Doctor Hono-ris Causa from the Uni-versity Chancellor HRH The Princess Royal in Edinburgh. Boys will be boys. No issues. But must they be such insensitive dolts? Luv Ranjan, director of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, seems to think that the worse they are the bet-ter. His film homes in on a trio of Delhi-NCR boys who share a swanky flat, drink like fish, party hop, and rib each other endlessly as they hunt for love. By the look of their spacious pad and the abandon with which they blow up money, the threesome appear to be doing fine in life. What

they clearly lack is tact, common sense and luck in relationships. The girls that they hook up come with their own set of problems and the three boys have no clue how to tide over them. They sink deeper and deeper into a quagmire because, like the film they are in, they believe a girl is only an object of desire to be acquired and controlled. Each of them hits upon a girl without so much as a by your leave, and pro-ceeds to boorishly force himself upon her. The first encounters take place in a party, at a wedding and in

the gym and the film has no room for either subtle-ty or finesse in the way the relationships evolve. The 2011 sleeper hit of which Pyaar Ka Punchna-ma 2 is an ill-advised re-peat act was a passable, if seriously dodgy, romantic comedy in which wom-en were blamed for all the troubles of mankind. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 does pretty much the same, but the novelty has worn off and it is saddled with an insufferably inept screenplay. The result: this tawdry boys-meet-girls rigmarole is a whole lot of unbearable blather.

said, his speech was a perfect amalgamation of wisdom and humour. What made his speech even more endearing was him intercepting it with references from the movies he has done like ‘Deewana’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ among others. The

best part, however, was his ref-erence to the famous ‘Lungi Dance’ from his movie ‘Chen-nai Express’, which the audience cannot get enough of, and we think neither can SRK. It is in-deed an honour for me to receive this doctorate today. “Humbled” is a word often used by people in

my profession. I dislike the hyp-ocritically obsequious connota-tion of it in these contexts so I’m not going to use it, but I will say that such occasions have a way of putting me right in my place! I get invited to conferences and inaugurations now and then to speak. When I receive the invi-

tations, I also receive my brief. It’s usually about “success” and my “tips” on it (not my toes- those are covered by the “I will never show my toes” clause in my acting contracts. It’s my at-tempt at gender equality. My co-stars have no nipple clauses; I have a no toes one).

Jennifer Lawrence has walked away from Boy-hood director Richard Linklater’s upcoming ro-mance, The Rosie Proj-ect. The Oscar-winning actress, 25, was slated to star in the filmmak-er’s new project, which is an adaptation of au-thor Graeme Simsion’s best-selling novel of the same name, report-ed Guardian online. The Rosie Project centres on a socially inept genetics professor, who creates a scientifically-crafted

Facebook is planning another addition to its already varied repertoire of offerings, this time attempting to take over news distribution. The social media gi-ant has been working on a new real-time news app, called “Notify”, that it expects to launch. Notify lets users subscribe to various news organisations on Facebook, called “stations”, and then send them notifications whenever the media outlet puts out a story. This is another push in the news direction for Facebook, accompanied by their recent addition of Instant articles, which repackages new stories to load them quickly and smoothly within the Face-book app itself. Notify’s direct competition will, obviously, be Twitter, which prides itself on being the bearer of breaking news. Twitter, it’s worth noting, also launched the “Moments” feature last week; a tab next to notifications that letss a user gather and sort tweets based on sections like tech-nology, entertainment, or sports.

Amazon.com Inc could emerge as the biggest win-ner from one of India’s most important festive - and shopping - seasons, after the e-tailer offered steep discounts, swift delivery and even gold bars to grab market share. The month-long festive sea-son, which began on Monday, culminates in Di-wali, or the Festival of Lights, but the first nine days are considered an especially auspicious time to make big purchases. Analysts say e-commerce firms in India could make as much as a quarter of their annual sales during this period, with the glob-al experience, logistics network and deep pockets of Amazon putting it in a good position to grab customers from local market leader Flipkart and smaller firm Snapdeal. “Amazon has been closing in,” said Harish Bijoor, an independent brand ex-pert and business analyst. “It has global play and is very nifty in terms of delivery.” India current-ly contributes the most new customers to Amazon outside the United States, the company said, mak-ing growth there a priority.

Mumbai City FC’s attack-er Subhash Singh is not shy in pointing out that the Indian Super League (ISL) is a better tourna-ment than the I-League, and it is the way forward for Indian football. “ISL is the way forward for Indian football. Subhash’s team Mumbai has made a slow start to the tournament but the striker is confident that the team will start

getting desired results in the coming matches despite the slow start. Mumbai have lost one and drawn one so far and are seventh on the points table. “It has been a slow start so far for us, but we are all working very hard in training. We are work-ing hard as a team on the training ground and the pitch. So hopefully we will have positive results in the upcoming match-es,” he said.

BABA Aparajith and Baba Indrajith were born 12 minutes apart. On Thursday at the MCA-BKC ground, Vishal Dab-holkar sent them both on their way in less than 5 minutes. Not to forget in the space of two deliver-ies. As far as bowlers pro-ducing twin-strikes goes, it couldn’t have been more literal than this one. By getting rid of the influen-tial twins — Indrajith the older of the two and the stand-in captain in this match and Aparajith his fill-in deputy — in rapid succession, the diminutive Mumbai left-arm spinner

had also turned the game on its head. Tamil Nadu had finished the first ses-sion rather comfortably with their score reading 102/1 and with the pros-pect of feasting on the al-ready harried home team bowling attack, which looked set to get baked further under the searing October heat of Mumbai as afternoon beckoned. But in a jiffy — Dabhol-kar had dismissed the well-set Kaushik Gandhi two overs earlier — the visitors had self-destruct-ed to slip from a position of strength to a state of disarray, their score read-ing 107/4 as the Baba

twins left the scene. Amid the mayhem and witness-ing the tailspin from the other end, stood Dinesh Karthik. On his shoul-ders lay the responsibility of steadying the ship and lifting Tamil Nadu from the significant hole they had dug themselves into. But you can never tell which Dinesh Karthik had turned up at the crease. The one who would justi-fy his talent and stroke his team out of trouble or that other impudent alter-ego of his that could easily as well attempt an audacious swipe in the name of a counterattack and throw it all away?

into the sunset, after safeguarding the team’s interests. Dhoni alone can see the last steps of this journey. It has made for some uncomfortable tidings in the past four months. The loss to Ban-gladesh in June didn’t help. Kohli’s first Test series win in Sri Lanka only increased the vol-

ume of this unrest. Much has been said about Dho-ni’s leadership, and bat-ting. Most of it has been unfair. It is one thing to discredit one of its best captains on results alone. But to ask for an end to his tenure, solely because a ready-made captain is waiting in the wings is unjustified.

offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is touring with the team, was also among the guests. Pujara, who is not part of the ODI squad, is a key member of the Test squad. Pujara marked his return to Test cricket with a series-win-ning century against Sri Lanka in the third and final Test of the tour. In-dia, under skipper Kohli,

went on to create history by winning a series on the Lankan soil after 22 years. The ongoing five-match ODI series against South Africa is leveled at 1-1, after Dhoni led India to a 22-run victory in the second ODI in Indore on Monday. Team India had a lovely dinner last eve-ning at the Pujara resi-dence in Rajkot.

The SGM, which lasted less than 10 min-utes, was just a formality as he was garlanded be-

fore taking over the hot seat in the BC Roy Club House where once Dalmi-ya ran the world cricket administration. A former joint secretary since 2014, Ganguly took over as the president, while junior Avishek Dalmiya was for-mally inducted into the cricket administration as joint-secretary. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel Thurs-day laid the foundation stone of the eighth and the biggest unit of state-owned Wanakbori ther-mal power station in Kheda district, with an investment of Rs 4,465 crore and power genera-tion capacity of 800 MW. Patel accused the erst-while UPA government of causing a six- year de-lay in giving necessary clearances to this power project. “We had sent an application to Govern-ment of India in 2009 for this project. Had timely environmental clearance been given, we would have been commission-ing the unit today,” said Patel about the Gujarat State Electricity Corpo-ration Limited-owned project that is expected to be completed by 2018-19. “When the project is completed, it will a BJP

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking legal action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for al-legedly filing a defective affidavit relating to his marital status during the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections. A bench headed by Justice J Chelameswar rejected the plea filed by an Ahmedabad resident who had challenged the Gujarat high court order which refused to entertain his plea on the ground that it lacked merit. The complaint filed by Nis-hant Varma in April 2014 had sought an FIR against Modi for “hiding” his marital status in the affi-davit he had filed with his nomination for 2012 As-

At least one fisherman from Gujarat was injured in firing on Thursday by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (MSA) which also captured 24 fishermen and seized four of their boats near the International Maritime Boundary Line off Gu-jarat coast. However, the MSA later released the injured fisherman, identi-fied as Dhanji Bamaniya, on humanitarian grounds along with five others who sailed back to Jakhau coast on Thursday night. According to Nation-al Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) Secretary Manish Lodhari, Bamaniya, a res-ident of Union Territory of Diu, was hit in his arm in firing that took place in

the afternoon. “Showing some mercy on the injured fisherman, the Pakistan MSA allowed him to sail back to Gujarat with five other fishermen who were on board ‘Surya Kiran’ boat. Bamaniya and oth-ers ventured into the sea on October 7 from Mang-rol,” he said. The incident occurred as the MSA fired some rounds on their boat as “warning”, which re-sulted in injuries to Bam-aniya. “He was hit on his arm. Luckily, he is out of danger and admitted to a hospital in Bhuj,” Lodhari said. The released fisher-men took help of Coast Guard to return to Jakhau. “After these six fisher-men on one boat were al-lowed to go, they contact-ed Coast Guard for help. A Coast Guard boat went

Howev-er, 24 fishermen are still in captivity of MSA and they were taken to Ka-rachi during afternoon. “Though one boat and 6 fishermen were allowed to go, the MSA has captured 24 of our fishermen and seized four of their boats and took them to Karachi port. The fishermen told us that the MSA person-nel fired on Bamaniya’s

The four boats cap-tured by MSA are- ‘Ma-heshwari-2’, ‘Shiv Shak-ti-5′, Matrubhoomi-2′ and Raj Laxmi-3’ and each of them was carrying six fishermen and sailing from Mangrol a week back. This is the second such incident of firing on Gujarat fishermen with-in one month. Earlier on September 18, one fisher-man from Okha port was killed in firing near IMBL.

government that will come here to inaugurate it,” Patel added, sending a message to her political rivals that BJP will return to power in 2017 when the next state assembly elections are due. The project also marks a first in the history of GSECL (that was created as a en-tity responsible for power

generation after the Gu-jarat Electricity Board or GEB was unbundled) for setting up a super critical thermal power project that will have less emis-sion, low heating and lesser fuel consumption. “Today there are seven units of 210 MW each at this power plant. This unit will add another 800

MW and it will consume 25 percent less coal than the other seven units and will bring down the cost of power generation from Rs 3 per unit to Rs 2.40 per unit,” said Energy Minister Saurabh Patel. Once ready this 800 MW is expected to add to Gu-jarat’s existing quota of surplus power.

Another precaution taken by the GSHSEB is to depute IT technical experts at each examination cen-tre to ensure all proce-dures from installing of CCTV cameras, record-ing of examinations to submission of CDs have been duly followed.

These steps are after the board discovered that corrupt compact discs (CDs) were submitted to the board, or the power supply intentionally dis-rupted to dodge camera footage during the few critical minutes. On en-quiry from the board, this was then blamed on the erratic electricity supply for non- compli-ance of submitting the CCTV recorded footage and submitting ‘edited’ CDs with missing re-cordings.
