Swine flu deaths at 663, people affected cross 10,000 NEW DELHI Swine flu deaths have soared to 663 across the country while number of people affected by it breached the 10,000 mark as the virus spread to new places like Nagaland. The figures show that there is no let-up in the impact of the virus as it claimed 39 more lives between February 16- 17. Health minister J P Nadda said there was no dearth of medicines and hospitals were equipped to deal with swine flu. The ministry said states have also not made any demand regarding drugs, diagnostic kits and other wherewithal to deal with the issue. Central government figures show that 10025 people have suffered from H1N1 virus so far this year, a new high in recent years. "There have been two deaths so far of patients who were infected with the H1N1 virus and 71 more patients have tested positive for the virus and are undergoing treatment," director, Sher-e- Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Showkat Zargar told reporters in Srinagar. He said while one death was confirmed to have occurred due to the virus, another female patient had critical cardiac ailments as well and may have died of those ailments. Nagaland reported its first confirmed case with a woman testing positive for the flu. Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are the worst-hit states with 183, 155 and 90 deaths reported from there respectively. In Punjab, the toll has risen to 24 while in neighbouring Haryana, the total number of deaths is 17. Six people have died in Uttar Pradesh where the number of positive cases has touched 114. New Delhi, Congress on Wednesday sought to corner the NDA goverment over the Pakistan terror boat issue and charged that the Defence Ministry had treated the matter casually as the row over it deepened in the wake of remarks by a senior Coast Guard officer contradicting the official version of the incident. Demanding that the government come clean on the issue, Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken told reporters that the contradictory statements suggested that the Defence Ministry, led by Manohar Parrikar, had not handled the matter properly and “treated it casually.” He further said that instead of “threatening” a senior Coast Guard officer, the government should come out with the facts of the matter. Congress was reacting to the statements by Coast Guard DIG BK Loshali contradicting the Defence Ministry’s claim that he had ordered the blowing up of an intruding Pakistani boat off Porbandar coast on New Year’s night. After the officer today made a U-turn and claimed he was misquoted, English daily Indian Express uploaded a video of the DIG in which he says that he had ordered on December 31 night to “blow up that boat”. “Let me tell you. I hope you remember 31st December night … We blew off that Pakistan… We have blown them off. I was there at Gandhinagar and I told at night, blow the boat off. We don’t want to serve them biryani,” Loshali said at a function in Surat yesterday. The Defence Ministry and Parrikar had said after the operation that the boat had blown up itself after its crew was asked to surrender. But with the Coast Guard officer’s remarks fuelling a row, Congress leader Manish Tewari earlier today asked the Defence Minister to introspect as to what was a bigger sin, blowing up the boat or “lying” to the nation. “Def Min what is a bigger sin blowing the Paki boat or lying to the nation? If they were indeed terrorists why be ashamed of blowing them (sic),” Tewari tweeted. “Uncanny similarities to similar modus operandi the fake encounter syndrome to bolster machismo & build Alpha image”, he added in another tweet. We will examine with the Indian government the concept of Make in India to produce some products in India," Ya'alon told reporters after inaugurating his country's pavilion at the Aero India trade expo at the Yelahanka base of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the city's outskirts. "I am proud to be the first Israeli defence minister to visit India. We see the occasion as a sign of the relations between the two countries deepening not only in defence, but also in many sectors," Ya'alon told the media. Noting that Israel had a strong defence industry, he said his country was ready to share its defence capabilities with India. On the cooperation between the two countries, Ya'alon said his country was willing to work in joint development and production to address the needs of India. "We are open for every option to work with our Indian counterparts," he added. I lose only when I fail myself : Kiran Bedi NEW DELHI, Defending her post Delhi assembly polls statement — "It is not my defeat, it is a defeat of the BJP" — former chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi on Wednesday clarified that she said so because she had not failed herself in person. "There are two parameters of measuring success. One is the outer success and another inner success. "And I knew I had and that is why I said that I didn't lose. I lose when I fail myself and I win when I win for myself," she added. "Actor Sanjay Dutt to spend fourmore days in jail" - says MoS Home Ram Shinde

Despite passing a number of laws related to rape andcrime against women, the Indian Govt. held back onmaking marital rape a criminal offense. Turning a blindeye to the problems women face within the walls of theirhome, wont solve the problem. However the classicargument that govt presents is that a law against maritalrape will weaken the traditional family values in India.Should we hold onto those values or let the law take itscourse even if the offender comes from within the family? The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to entertaina PIL challenging a provision in the penal law which doesnot consider rape as the sexual intercourse of a man withhis wife who is a minor noting that a similar matter hasbeen junked by the apex court. A bench headed by ChiefJustice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw dismissed aswithdrawn the plea of an NGO highlighting the exceptionin Section 375 of the IPC which states that sexualintercourse by a man with his own wife, the wife not beingunder 15 years of age, is not rape. "Similar matter hasbeen dismissed by the Supreme Court. We don't seeanything into this petition," the bench said after which theNGO withdrew its plea. Rit Foundation had submittedthat the exception in section 375 was brought by way ofthe Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013, which wasenacted after the horrific gangrape case of December16, 2012. In its petition, it had claimed that the exceptionto Section 375 of the IPC was to the extent that it grantsimmunity to a husband by raping his own wife, who isabove age of 15 years, was unconstitutional. It submittedthat the exception was "unconstitutional and violative ofthe Right to Equality guaranteed to married women underArticle 14 of the Constitution as it decriminalises rapewhen the perpetrator is the lawfully wedded husband ofthe victim." It had said that even though the law made adistinction between married and unmarried woman in thiscase, the basis of distinction does not have any rationalnexus with the object sought to be achieved by the law, which is to protect women from sexual assault. Thepetition had also stated that marital rape has beencriminalised in almost all major common law jurisdictionsthroughout the world, including in the US, the UK, SouthAfrica and Canada. The Supreme Court Tuesday refusedto entertain a woman's plea to declare marital rape acriminal offence, saying it wasn't possible to order achange in the law for one person. A Delhi-based MNCexecutive had told the court that her husband repeatedlyresorted to sexual violence but she was helpless as maritalrape was not a crime in India. "You are espousing apersonal cause and not a public cause...This is anindividual case," a bench of justice AR Dave and justiceR Banumathi said, refusing to take up her plea. Thewoman had challenged the validity of an exception toSection 375 of the IPC that says sexual intercourse by aman with his wife, who is 15 or above, is not rape even ifit is without consent. The provision, the woman said, violated her fundamental right to life and liberty. As thebench was not inclined to entertain the petition, ColinGonsalves, who represented the woman, chose towithdraw it. "We would move the court again on theissue....may be through a women's organisation," thesenior advocate told. SPORTS ROUNDUPICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

Duncan Fletcher in charge, Team India'smedia manager rubbishes rift rumoursThe Indian teammanagement on Wednesdaysought to deny a mediareport about chief coachDuncan Fletcher beingignored meetings and alsonot being kept in the loopabout team strategy. WithIndian team taking a day-offand players being left ontheir own to relax, therewere reports of team'ssupport staff led by TeamDirector Ravi Shastri havingan impromptu meeting at theteam hotel Langham withFletcher not informed aboutit. "I can confirm that no suchmeeting was held. There isabsolutely no truth thatDuncan was not kept in theloop about a meeting of thesupport staff. I can only termthis as figment of imagination,"team's media manager DR RN Baba said when specifically

asked about about the riftamong support staff. Thegeneral notion since Shastri'sappointment has been that it'sa move by BCCI to clipFletcher's wings after team'spoor overseas record over aperiod of time. In fact, according to team sources, bowling coach Bharath Arunand fielding coach R Sridhar, apparently went to meet theircommon friend in the eveningduring the time when the so-called meeting of supportstaff without Fletcher was

supposedly held. Whencontacted a senior BCCIofficial currently in India, said,"Do you people seriouslythink that Fletcher needs tobe sidelined with these kindof childish tricks". "Fletcherhas a contract till the end ofthe World Cup, which is onlya month and half away. Wedon't think he will seek anextension. So if a man isleaving after the World Cup,do you need to dosomething like this," theoffical said.

ICC World Cup: Captain Elton Chigumburaurges Zimbabwe to be 'ruthless

Zimbabwe took heart fromtheir gutsy display againsttitle contenders South Africaand will try to be "ruthless"against the United ArabEmirates, captain EltonChigumbura said onWednesday. Zimbabwe hadthe Proteas reeling at 83 forfour before being put to thesword by a world recordfifth-wicket unbroken standof 256 between DavidMiller and JP Duminy. Theywere 214 for three and wellset to push on for the final15 overs in their chase of340 before losing a flurry of

wickets to be bowled outfor 277. "It was a bit of both,a confidence boost the waywe played, and obviouslyit's always disappointing toplay the way we did for 90overs but we didn't manageto finish off the last 10overs," Chigumbura toldreporters in Nelson. "Wetook a lot out of the gamewe played and hopefully wecan carry on with that form.Playing the first game gaveus the opportunity to try andcorrect where we wentwrong from the first one."The two days that we've

got, we tried to polish that, and yeah, we're nowlooking forward to the UAEgame," he said. "We have totake every game seriouslyand do the basics right andmake sure that when you getinto good winning positionyou are ruthless and win thegame." HamiltonMasakadza's form has beenanother positive for theZimbabwe side. The 31-year-old batsman scored anunbeaten 117 in their warm-up victory over Sri Lankaand followed it up with a 80against South Africa. "Thegood thing about our teamat the moment, everyone isin good nick, so we don'texpect just Hamilton to putup a good performance,"Chigumbura said. "The restof the guys in the squad arecapable of doing the samejob." This will be the firstone-day internationalbetween the two sides andUAE captain MohammadTauqir spelled out his team'sambition in the tournament.

World Cup 2015: Before Indiamatch, Dale Steyn down with flu

South Africa’s fast bowlerDale Steyn missed trainingon Wednesday due to flu,but is expected to be fit forthe World Cup matchagainst India at the

Melbourne CricketGround. The pacemanbowled just seven overs inSouth Africa’s first warm-upmatch against Sri Lanka andwas rested for the second

game against hosts NewZealand. He was sufferingfrom a sore throat andblocked nose during theirWorld Cup opener againstZimbabwe, where hereturned with unimpressivefigures of one for 64 fromnine overs. South Africa isscheduled to play India at theMelbourne Cricket Groundon Sunday. India havepreviously played threegames against the Porteas inthe World Cup but havenever won any of them.

World Cup 2015: Sterner SouthAfrican test lies ahead for Indian attack

Though Team India wouldbe reasonably satisfied withthe performance of theirbowlers in the World Cupopener against Pakistan onSunday, sterner tests lieahead. Next up for India onSunday would be SouthAfrica, whose batting line-up can send a chill down thespine of any bowling unit. Toput things in perspective, captain Mahendra SinghDhoni has cautioned hisbowlers that they won'thave the luxury of defendinga 300-plus score everysingle time. "Yes, we wereable to post 300 this time. But we must realize that ifbowling first, we will have

to keep the oppositiondown to the range of 240-260 for the batsmen to havea realistic chance of chasingdown that target," Dhoni hadsaid after the victory overPakistan. Against Pakistan,Mohammed Shami grabbedfour wickets. Umesh Yadavand Mohit Sharma baggedtwo each while R Ashwinand Ravindra Jadeja alsochipped in with a wicketapiece. The performanceagainst Pakistan, however, was an exception. Indianbowling, of late, has been astudy in inconsistency. In thetri-series preceding theWorld Cup, India's bowlingattack looked very

unsettled. Stuart Binnystarted off with the new ballwhile Axar Patel was themain spinner. To be fair,Dhoni's experiment was dueto the injuries suffered byIshant Sharma,Bhuvneshwar Kumar andRavindra Jadeja. Ashwinwas kept on the sidelines. With every loss, as pressuregrew on the Indian captain,he chose to stress on theprocess. "What is moreimportant right now is theprocess than the result," wasDhoni's common refrainduring the post-match newsconferences during the tri-series. "We are making aneffort to win the matches. Butwe want to try out playerswho haven't had muchinternational exposure. Weare making an honest effortbut at the same time we areexecuting a plan and in thatprocess we sometimes losesome matches," was hisstandard reply. It was onlyin the second warm-upmatch against Afghanistan inAdelaide that Dhoni chose touse five frontline bowlers, leaving Binny and Bhuvi out.

World Cup 2015: Real Afghanistanneed to stand up, says coach

Afghanistan are at the WorldCup to compete for victoriesand simply did not give a trueaccount of themselves intheir defeat to Bangladeshon their tournament debut, coach Andy Moles said onWednesday. The thumping105-run loss was a hugedisappointment to theAfghans, whose meteoricrise to the top table ofinternational cricket over thelast 15 years has been a raregood news story from theirwar-torn country. Afterholding Bangladesh to arespectable 267 all out intheir 50 overs at ManukaOval, they lost their firstthree wickets for three runsin three overs and werefinally bowled out for 162."That isn't a true reflection

of how we play, but in anygame of cricket when you'rethree for three in one and ahalf overs, not many teams,if any teams come backfrom that," Moles told anews conference inCanberra. "The boys arevery proud in theirperformance, and theyknow that they haven't givena fair reflection today."We're in the shop windowhere, we haven't disgracedourselves but we got lost,we just didn't get out of theblocks tonight with the bat,we were in a fog," headded. "They bowled verywell and before we knewwhere we were, we wereone-two-three down andjust treading water." Cricketwas still the subject of a

Taliban ban in Afghanistanwhen Bangladesh madetheir World Cup debut in1999 but Moles said histeam had approached thefixture against one of the 10test-playing nations withhigh hopes. "We genuinelythought this was a game wecould have won tonight," hesaid. "I still believe that ifwe'd have applied ourselvesbetter, we would have givena better account ofourselves. "Take nothingaway from Bangladesh, theyplayed very well but wedidn't hit the heights weexpect of ourselves." Askedwhether nerves wereresponsible for the calamitousfolding of the top order,Moles said he would betalking to the batsmen abouttheir mental approach to thematch. "I really don't thinkthey were up for the fight fromball one," he said.Moles said his playersneeded to take the defeat "onthe chin" and pick themselvesup for their next match againstSri Lanka in Dunedin, NewZealand on Sunday.

Pakistan Cricket Board moves toquash rumours of unrest in the ranks

The Pakistan Cricket Boardhas moved to quashrumours of unrest within theteam amid allegationsseveral players have fallenout with a coach. Days afterreports emerged that eightPakistani players were finedfor breaching curfew, thePCB has categoricallyrefuted reports claimingfielding coach Grant Ludenquit his post after a row with

senior players Shahid Afridi,Ahmed Shehzad and UmarAkmal. "The news isabsolutely false and thatnothing of the sort hashappened," the PCB said in astatement released onWednesday night. That's notentirely right. Luden did informthe PCB chairman and chiefexecutive several days beforethe World Cup of his intentionsto leave in May 2015 due to

"personal reasons", butretracted his resignation afterthose issues were resolved.Ithas not been a smooth startto the tournament forPakistan. Afridi and Shehzadwere among eight playersfined $300 for returning totheir Sydney hotel late beforethe tournament, a report lastweek claimed. The PCB hasalso issued a social mediaban on the squad throughoutthe tournament. Pressure isbuilding on Pakistan aftertheir heavy loss to India onSunday.
