So there we were. Stuck. No, not stuck in sand or mud like the folks you’re going to see a bit later

in this issue. But stuck. On the side of a farm road in a truck that wouldn’t run. We knew we were taking a chance when we left home that day, but we took it anyway. We got through about half of the things we planned to do, but it looked like the rest of our errands were going to wait for a later time. And in the meantime we waited. About 45 minutes later we watched a tow truck driver load up the truck on his flat bed. He seemed to be man of few words. At first. We’ll call him Jerry for the sake of the story. Very soon we were riding high in the cab of his truck and heading in the direction of Ocotillo Wells, also known as home, which was about an hour away. He was familiar with us and asked how long we’d been doing the magazine and when we said a little over 30 years he mentioned that was about the same amount of time he’d been driving tow trucks. And then he proceeded to entertain us with stories of rescuing off roaders stuck and stuck bad in all parts of the desert. I’ll do my best to remember how they went because we did a lot of laughing on our way home inside that tow truck. We heard an hour’s worth of stories and I’ll share three of them here. The first one was a broken-down vehicle, the driver and three friends were waiting for the tow. When our man Jerry shows up, they ask “You speak Spanish?” “No,” he tells them matter-of-factly. “You need to learn,” they tell him. “No, I don’t. I’m in the U.S.” he says resolutely. “Do you know how close you are to the border?” they say pushing the issue. “I’m on this side of the border. I speak English.” “But you’re close enough to the border you need to learn Spanish.” “I speak English,” Jerry reiterates and finally the arrangements are finished in English. Once the guys are all in the tow truck the friends in the back seat, including the one who pushed the language issue, start talking to each other in Spanish with the entire conversation derogatory comments about the

driver laced with cuss words and dirty name calling. At this point in the telling of the story Jerry smiles and says to us, “I don’t speak Spanish but I understand it and I can speak it if I choose to. I’ve lived here all my life this close to the border, of course I’ve learned Spanish.” Finally after listening to this for too many miles, he pulls the truck over to the side

of the road and points to the guys in the back. “Get out of my truck!” he says. They’re indignant and demand to know why. He tells them “I don’t choose to speak Spanish but I understand it. Now get out of my truck.” Only the owner of the car being towed got to finish the ride. And probably lucky for him

he wasn’t joining in the conversation with his buddies. Then there was the vehicle running illegals that got stuck deep in the desert mud somewhere. After Homeland Security had carted away everyone involved they radioed for a tow truck. In comes our man Jerry, the lone ranger with the lone rescue vehicle. He surveys the situation and determines that he can do the job but needs one of the officers to sit in the vehicle and turn the steering wheel. They refuse. Say its against regulations and oh by the way they tell him, after you get it out we’re confiscating the vehicle. “No, you’re not,” Jerry says. “I’m taking it to our tow yard and it won’t be released until the fees are paid.” Well that didn’t go over well with the authorities and Jerry threatened to radio his boss to come out to the scene. “They’re asking me to get this vehicle unstuck for free,” he explained to us. “If they take it we have no way to collect the rescue fees from the registered owner.” The agents insisted they had the authority to take the vehicle and didn’t need to wait for permission from Jerry’s boss. Then they expressed doubt that he could even get the vehicle out by himself. That was all it took. Did I mention that our man Jerry is a wagering man? “I’ll make a bet with you,” he told them. “If I can’t get this vehicle out, I’ll call for back-up help and when it gets out you can take it. But if I do get it out by myself, I’m taking it back to the tow yard.” Well that was a deal they couldn’t pass up. But they should have. This was one determined tow truck driver and using his wits, some big sticks and his tow rig he eventually had that baby unstuck and very soon, to the dismay of Homeland Security, he was towing it back to the yard where it sat until all the fees were paid to release it. But my most favorite story of all was the 4WD owner who got his truck stuck in the unforgiving mud of the Salton Sea. He called in late on a Friday afternoon and wanted the truck towed out right then. Jerry told him it would soon be dark and he couldn’t do it until the following morning. That didn’t set well with Mr. Drunk Angry 4WD owner and he cussed him out and told Jerry to forget it and said he wouldn’t use him at all.

About 24 hours later a call comes in from this same guy. Still stuck. Tells Jerry there are now three other guys stuck too and how much will he charge to come and get all four of them out. Jerry quotes him a price and then says but it’s too close to dark, I can’t do it till early morning. More cussing along with adamant refusals to ever use his tow service. “We’ll do it ourselves!” Mr. Angry screams into the phone. Sunday comes, early afternoon. Mr. Drunk Angry 4WD owner calls and says, now there are ten of us stuck. What will you charge? Knowing he has to be back at work on Monday and needs his truck rescued, he humbly accepts the thousand dollar quote over the phone and our man Jerry heads out to the Salton Sea. When he gets there the owners of the stuck vehicles start laughing and mocking the vehicle our man Jerry is planning on using to rescue them. They insist he’ll never be able to get a single one of them out, let alone all ten. Jerry listens to this for a bit and then says those words he must surely be famous for: “Wanna make a bet?” They did. He bet them that if he couldn’t rescue all 10 of them, whichever ones he did rescue did not have to pay him a penny. But if he did get all 10 of them out, they had to pay him double the quoted price. Two thousand dollars. They all went for what they thought was a sure bet. Jerry gets into his special cut-through-the-Salton-Sea-muck-rig and slowly starts making his way out into the mud, bypasses the first nine closest to the hard pack and heads all the way out to Mr. Drunk Angry 4WD’s truck which was the worst one. They all watch still laughing at what they knew was going to be certain failure. One hour goes by, two hours, but what they didn’t count on was the tenacity, perseverance and knowledge of this determined tow truck driver and suddenly out popped that stuck truck to the surprise of the entire audience. Soon they all started fishing through their wallets to round up the double fee because they knew if he got out Mr. Angry Drunk’s stuck truck, he’d have no problem rescuing the rest of them. When our man Jerry got back to the tow yard and handed his boss the two thousand dollars, he had quite a story to tell about how he doubled the money. The boss gave him the bonus and then warned “You know, if you had failed it would have come out of your paycheck.” The satisfied smile on Jerry’s face as he relayed the adventure to us said “It was worth the risk!” All these stories, are they fact or fiction? You be the judge. I’m just repeating them as I heard them. Or at least as best I remember them. But whatever you decide, just keep this in mind: If you ever get stuck in the desert and a tow truck driver named Jerry comes to your rescue, I wouldn’t make any bets with him if you know what’s good for your wallet. Pack Your Bags For Dune Season!DragonFire Doubles Up On Storage Space

It is Dune Season, and that can mean only one thing: Time to pack your bags and head out to Glamis for

DragonFire's favorite time of year! One drawback to this scenario is that there never seems to be enough storage space

for small or fragile items like keys or your cell phone. Problem solved with DragonFire's new DoorBags! These universal bags are designed to

double up your storage space while keeping belongings safe. “Our new ‘DoorBags’ not only keep stuff securely stashed, they are easily accessible, even when you are buckled in,” notes DragonFire's Social Media manager Chris Moore. “DoorBags are a

perfect combination of function and style and a must-have accessory for any UTV.” The triangular shape and fully adjustable mounting straps allow for fitment on virtually any UTV door available. The ballistic nylon material is semi-waterproof, while the bag is split into three separate compartments, including a lined inner pocket with key ring. Further enhancing the versatility of these bags is the fact that they are completely detachable via a quick-disconnect mounting system. “We even included an integrated carrying handle for added convenience,” claims Moore.

FEATURES: • Constructed of ballistic nylon material • Semi-waterproof design • 3 separate compartments • Soft lined inner compartment with key ring • Quick disconnect mounting system • Universal fitment with multiple adjustment points • Integrated carrying handle Now you can literally pack your bags with phones and cameras to make sure your next trip to the dunes gets properly recorded. Truckhaven 2016 CancelledHelp CORVA As We Support Ocotillo Wells SVRA!

We are sorry. We understand many of you are disappointed. CORVA run events are fun and

a way to both give back to our members and raise the needed operating funds. The Truckhaven Challenge has been a popular and successful event for many years. Regulars tell us they add next year’s date to their calendar right after returning home from the current event. We have a problem for 2016. For the fourth time since 1993, an anti OHV group has filed for endangered species status for the flat tailed horned lizard. Because the California Fish and Wildlife Service has opted to study the request, no permits are being issued for the Ocotillo Wells SVRA and Truckhaven. The review period will end in February 2016, but we

Dirtbitsdon’t know what the next steps will be. Typically, CORVA and others who run OHV events make efforts to relocate and reschedule annual events when we lose access to a regular venue. Quite frankly, these “fixes” are difficult. It takes time to establish attendance and operations. Often the adaptations fail to excite and fail to generate funds. CORVA has neither the funds nor the human resources to offer Truckhaven at a place other than Truckhaven. We simply cannot

re-create Truckhaven elsewhere. We are also beginning to understand that our efforts to adapt are sometimes detrimental to the fight to keep what we already have. This is the fight that CORVA is proud to lead in California. We have taken many steps ahead of other OHMVR advocacy groups and have brought them along with us. The greater our numbers the greater our visibility to decision makers. As noted, there have been three prior efforts to have the flat-tailed horned lizard named a protected species. Each time the designation has been refused after costly analysis. “In conclusion, OHV activity does not appear to be a significant threat to flat-tailed horned lizard habitat throughout its range at this time, nor is it likely to become a significant threat in the foreseeable future.” What has changed? Not much, although there are some strategic points being made in this latest filing that CORVA and others have commented on. It is also incumbent on CORVA to keep your seat at the table throughout this process. After much discussion, we have decided to draw our line in the sand. The Truckhaven Challenge will be back, when we regain access to Truckhaven. We’ve heard from some of our loyal attendees that anyplace that isn’t Truckhaven won’t be the Truckhaven Challenge. We believe those comments should be heard. Here is where you can help. CORVA earned your money at the Truckhaven Challenge. We now need to earn your money without the Truckhaven Challenge. Stay tuned. We have some ideas for engaging you in this effort. Meanwhile, if you are angry enough to help fund the fight, we will put your dollars to very good use. Donate Here: www.corva.org/donation-project Thank you for your support. Diana Mead, President, California Off Road Vehicle Association.

EPA’s Smog Regulation Will Cost 40x More Than It PredictedPosted November 5, 2015ByMichael Bastasch

The Environmental Protection Agency estimated its stricter smog limits would only cost Americans

$1.4 billion a year, but a new report argues the total cost to the economy is likely 40

times higher than agency estimates. The right-leaning American Action Forum says EPA’s updated smog, or ground-level ozone, rule could cost $56.5 billion in lost wages based on economic losses from counties that couldn’t comply with the agency’s 2008 rule. “Observed nonattainment counties experienced losses of $56.5 billion in total wage earnings, $690 in pay per worker, and 242,000 jobs between 2008 and 2013,” according to policy experts. EPA finalized stricter ozone standards earlier this year, forcing states to lower ambient levels from 75 parts per billion to 70 parts per billion. The problem is that compliance with previous ozone standards has proven difficult, especially for counties with heavy manufacturing

centers. Counties that find themselves in noncompliance may be forced to curtail manufacturing or oil and gas extraction. Critics argue the rule is one of the costliest in U.S. history, likely to cost billions of dollars every year and harm economic growth. “EPA’s ozone standards affect a broad array of industries, and due to the nature of how ozone actually forms, nonattainment areas can have difficulty meeting standards quickly,” the study

found. “California, for example, will have nearly a generation to reach the new standards.” Manufacturing groups have come out against stricter ozone rules, arguing it

would hamper jobs and economic growth. Critics also note that not all U.S. counties are even in compliance with EPA’s 2008 standard, and a stricter standard would only cause more economic harm. “This could result in certain businesses making economic decisions to reduce hiring, limit raises, and move or expand operations elsewhere,” according

to AAF. “The result? $56.5 billion in lost wages and 240,000 fewer jobs in nonattainment counties struggling to meet standards. EPA, however, argues only 241 counties won’t meet stricter ozone standards. These counties are mainly in urban regions with heavy manufacturing or in the U.S. southwest where smog from China makes compliance extremely difficult. “Put simply – ozone pollution means it hurts to breathe for those most vulnerable: our kids, our elderly and those suffering from heart and lung ailments,” EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in October. Today’s action is one of the most important measures we can take for improving public health, reducing the costs of illness and protecting our children’s health,” McCarthy said. Critics argue the number of counties out of compliance with EPA’s ozone rule would be much higher than the agency estimates. In fact, there are about 100 state and national parks that wouldn’t be in compliance with ozone rules. “Hardly transportation corridors and centers of heavy pollution, many observers would be surprised to know that Death Valley National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Cape Cod National Seashore have ozone readings of 71 to 87 [parts per billion],” according to an AAF report from last year

UK Using Diesel Generators To Avoid Blackouts From Too Much Wind, Solar EnergyPosted November 4, 2015By Michael Bastasch

Britain’s grid is in shambles and the government is subsidizing diesel generators to get enough backup

power online to support the country’s growing reliance on highly variable wind

and solar energy. The United Kingdom has prided itself on being a leader in green energy, but now it may spend more than $670 million subsidizing not-so-green diesel generators to keep the lights on, according to the Financial Times. So far, the country has 1.5 gigawatts of diesel power registered for subsidies, according to FT, which is enough to power more than 1 million homes per year. Diesel subsidies are so appealing even solar panel farms are using them to make money and keep power going when the sun isn’t shining. “All diesel operators have to do is buy diesel units in shipping containers from China and plug them into a grid connection,” Dave Jones, an energy expert at the firm Sandbag, told FT. “The low capital cost means that they can undercut things like gas.” Interestingly enough, the move to diesel power comes amidst a severe energy supply crunch. Britain is closing old coal plants no longer compliant with national and European Union climate policies, which has taken lots of cheap baseload power offline. The problem is there aren’t a lot of cheap alternatives to coal in Britain. Natural gas is expensive and green energy requires taxes to make them financially competitive with traditional energy sources. With winter coming, the UK is facing tough decisions about its energy future. Concerns about grid reliability came to light Wednesday when the National Grid begged for more power generation capacity to come online after “multiple plant breakdowns” caused a supply crunch. “This is part of our standard toolkit for balancing supply and demand and is not an indication there is an immediate risk of disruption to supply or blackouts. It indicates that we would like our power held in reserve to be higher,” National Grid said in a public statement. The grid needed more than 500 megawatts of additional capacity to come online — for reference, that’s equivalent to asking three or four coal-fired generators to come online. High energy prices and grid reliability problems have largely turned Brits away from green energy. The country’s conservative government has even pledged to phase out green subsidies in response to political backlash against higher taxes on citizens’ energy bills. “By the mid-2020s, we would like to see the government retreat as much as is possible from [renewable energy] subsidies, the current administration is aiming to be more discriminating about the types of low-carbon technology it wishes to support,” Stephen Lovegrove, the head of Britain’s Department of Energy and Climate Change, said in October. E

times higher than agency estimates.

Forum says EPA’s updated smog, or ground-level ozone, rule could cost $56.5 billion in lost wages based on economic losses from counties that couldn’t comply with the agency’s 2008 rule.

experienced losses of $56.5 billion in total wage earnings, $690 in pay per worker, and 242,000 jobs between 2008 and 2013,” according to policy experts.

standards earlier this year, forcing states to lower ambient levels from 75 parts per billion to 70 parts per billion. The problem is that compliance with previous ozone standards has proven difficult, especially for counties with heavy manufacturing

Critics argue the rule is one of the costliest in U.S. history, likely to cost billions of dollars every year and harm economic growth.

Four wheelers who drive throughout the desert southwest are quite accustomed to tough conditions. Not

just terrain, either: The heat can be brutal. Encountering a flash flood is probably the last thing on your mind. But it can happen, and the results can be tragic. A deadly flood in Zion National Park, Utah, this past September is a sobering reminder of that hazard. The flood, which tore through Keyhole Canyon, claimed the lives of seven. Granted, those individuals were on foot, but flash floods affect vehicles, too, even 4,000 – 5,000 lb. four wheelers. Forecasters are saying that the El Niño phenomenon will be particularly strong this winter. That heightens the chance for moisture throughout the West, including the desert areas. You’re probably thinking: “A flash flood in a desert? C’mon, Tom!” Yes, they are possible, in the right areas. But also in mountainous terrain, which should be apparent. Four wheelers, accustomed to driving in tough conditions, figure they can just plow through that water. Not a chance. Don’t even think about it. Water only two feet deep can float your vehicle. Your wheels may still be touching, but you won’t have good traction. Be careful while hiking, too. Six inches of fast-moving water can knock you off your feet. If you can’t wade through, don’t try driving through. Remember this maxim: Turn Around. Don’t Drown. Of course, flash floods aren’t confined to remote areas. Urban communities across the country suffer floods frequently. One big difference off road is that the threat isn’t always very apparent. You could be camping, driving or hiking on a bright sunny day. Unbeknownst to you, a storm is raging in the mountains several miles away. Eventually a trickle shows up in that nearby wash. You think nothing of it. Minutes later, the water is cascading down, getting deeper by the moment. You may have only minutes to find an escape route. This is why I always recommend moving out when water appears in a wash or a nearby stream. That stream could gain new life and momentum. Soon, a flood is roaring down on you. As with any trip, preparation helps you avoid disaster. Check the weather

forecast before and, if possible, during your trip. If the park has a website and Facebook page, monitor those, too. Zion National Park posts weather advisories on its Facebook page when appropriate.

Pack a weather radio and, if you’re a ham radio operator, your radio gear. Cell phones are OK, but coverage is spotty in the wild. Consider buying a satellite phone. You can learn more about communication options in my

article Communications equipment is critical for off-road driving. (www.4x4training.com/Articles/Safety/CommEquipForOff-RoadDriving.html It’s also good to know the various warnings that the weather service issues, including flood advisory and flash flood warning. Read

more about those here . If near a wash, stream or river, always take a moment to plan an escape route. Don’t wait for disaster to strike. You won’t be able to think clearly, and you may end up downstream. If a trickle of water appears, move to higher ground. That might mean simply climbing up on a rock or hiking away. Leave your vehicle and your gear. Those can be replaced. Rapidly changing weather is nothing new to seasoned 4WD enthusiasts. Flash flooding in normally dry areas may be hard to imagine, but it does happen. Don’t try to fight it. Odds are the water will win, which means you’ll lose.

Hello Off Roaders! I went off a bit in last month's Health Column for S&S Off Road

Magazine. If you read the article, you would have learned about a lady who suffered with headaches for 25 years and not once was it suggested by her medical doctors that maybe she should see if her neck was the cause of her “migraine headaches” that she was labeled with for 25 years of her life. She responded right away to having chiropractic adjustments to her neck that most likely had been locked up and misaligned since she was about 15 years old. This is, in part, why it is so important to have your children checked by a chiropractor as they would with a dentist a few times a year. Not all chiropractors work on kids but many do and it's a great, drug free, safe form of treatment for many conditions. If your youngster got a diagnosis for ADD or ADHD, all labels

when Johnny can't seem to sit still for 8 hours a day, you may want to get his neck checked for misalignments that can cause concentration problems. Or, do you just do as the MD tells you and dope him up on drugs that resemble prescription speed? The choices are yours. I will say that no one responds better to chiropractic care than kids, younger folks. They have not been on the planet that long with gravity pulling them down, compressing their spines and they do not have all the stresses of adults with responsibilities and worry. They do not have prejudice or preconceived notion about chiropractic care. We have bred a nation of prescription drug addicts

with our current medical model of treatments. Too bad. Go ahead and look up the statistics for “deaths from prescription drugs in the USA/North America.” It's shocking. Compare with “deaths from illegal drug use” and you will see

where the real War on Drugs should be focused. Like him or not, only Ron Paul knew these numbers in the 2008 debates. Speaking of neck problems, you may not know you even have one unless you get checked by a doctor of chiropractic (DC). After all, many folks do not know they have a cavity until they get a check up by a dentist, right? Funny part is, you can neglect the dentist check ups and lose a tooth. No big deal, they make new teeth in many a form from dentures to implants. Not so with the spine, as they do not and cannot make new spines or nerves! They are the only ones you get for a lifetime. Yet, most folks see the value in regular dental check ups to prevent the small problems from becoming big ones but they do not see the value for all the same reasons in having a DC check their spines a few times a year. And all the politicians, law makers,

policy makers and medical doctors wonder why we have a nation of Rx Drug addicts? I have had folks come in over the years with chronic

lower back pain they’ve had for years. Many will tell me, “Doc, my lower back pain is gone but what I'm really happy about is I'm not constipated anymore for the first time in 25 years!” or “Doc, since my neck pain is all gone, my headaches have gone away!” While chiropractic is not a cure all, it is under utilized by both the medical profession and the public at large. If more MD's would send people to a good, results-orientated DC for non-medical emergency conditions, we could probably cut the nation’s healthcare costs in half and cut out much of the Rx drug abuse as well. I have several MD's, dentists and nurses, who come in for chiropractic care instead of running to the pharmacy. These

healthcare professionals have open minds and are aware of other forms of treatment for many a health condition. Much of it is just for back and neck pain. Never discount what else it could help. The nerves control the body, all of it. Once folks understand that all the electrical energy flows from the brain to every living cell in their bodies, through the spine, they see the value of having a spine that is aligned and moving as well as possible to make sure that nerve flow is not irritated or impeded in any way. That nerve flow also flows back from every living cell in our bodies, all the organs and back up to parts of the brain that regulate that area or function of the body. It's that simple folks! That is chiropractic in a nutshell! Nowadays with nearly every person and child staring down at their dumb-phone, texting away, for hours on end, sitting at a desk in front of a computer, long classroom hours, heavy back packs full of books, TV and video games, it is no wonder to this DC of 31 years as to why people have so many neck issues and headaches, TMJ Syndrome, upper and lower back pain. Many folks want the quick, easy fix that pain killing drugs can bring. It's real easy for the MD to just write a prescription and send you off to the pharmacy. This DC has learned better and now that you know you have choices to make for you and your family and friends, what choice are you going to make? Most folks just do not know any better, but now I hope you do. Well, it is back to the desert time folks. You have made sure your tires and wheels on your vehicles are aligned and balanced. Chains and sprockets are lubed and aligned properly to prevent breakdowns and prevent wear and tear. Is your spine/back aligned and balanced? Remember, replacement parts for the human machine are hard to come by and very expensive. It's up to you to get a dental check-up and chiropractic treatment as “an ounce of prevention” and or cure. I do! I get a chiropractic tune up about one time per month and have for the last 40 plus years. I have zero spinal arthritis, even after 48 years of riding dirt bikes! Lucky me to understand the value of spinal alignment at such an early age.

Dr. Gary De Forest is a San Diego based DC and has been in Old Town for over 30 years. He is always happy to speak with you about any health concerns. He can be reached at his office at 619-291-2462 or e-mail him at [email protected].

It Should Have Been Malpractice!

Lost Lizard Fun Run

The 11th annual Lost Lizard Fun Run was a big success. The route was challenging, yet fun, the

checkpoint games were a hoot and the raffle had dozens of winners getting super prizes. This year's event was moved from Ocotillo Wells to Superstition Mountain OHV area because of problems with a lizard. We were worried the new venue would not make as good of an event as our old, but our worries disappeared once the event began to unfold. Lots of people signed up and there were no real problems to speak of. While we had literally hundreds of raffle prizes, some of our best included aluminum wheels for a Jeep, new tires for a side by side, an airplane tour and 2 flat screen TVs. A big thanks to San Diego DSC 100.7 Jack FM radio personality Chris Boyer who MCed the raffle, which went on and on because of so many prizes. The following day Fight for Ocotillo Wells held a cleanup in the same area and Desiree Bates went up on stage to promote it. After she finished, I went up to surprise Desiree and announced that she has been selected to be the first recipient of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame new catagory of Rising Star for 2015. Desiree will get her Plaque at the next SDORC membership meeting in December. A big thanks goes to our entire fun run committee as well as everyone who volunteered the day of the event with signup, checkpoints, food, etc. Biggest thanks goes to our chairpersons Audrey Mason and Kathleen Smith, without whom this event would never have taken place. Also a big thanks to their husbands KJ and Rob, who not only put up with their wives being super busy, but pitched in themselves the whole way through. It was a pleasure working with all of the people who helped make this such a special, well loved event.

Gas Cans Some people are confused about the legal way to transport and dispense gasoline to and in the desert. Desiree Bates asked staff at Ocotillo Wells and the BLM about what is legal and what is not. From Ocotillo Wells: The laws regarding the CARB compliant fuel cans were put in place to minimize gasoline venting and spilling. The laws apply to the point of sale at this time, who knows what the future will bring. As of now, Ocotillo Wells SVRA

is very similar to BLM in the enforcement of fuel issues. The Rangers will enforce laws in order to ensure the protection of the environment and public, so if a fuel container is leaking and spilling, the person will likely get spoken to. If someone is transporting fuel in an unsafe manner, they will also likely be spoken to. But our Rangers have not cited anyone for possession or

use of a fuel container that is not CARB certified. The Rangers out here have cited folks for pouring gasoline on the ground and igniting it, but not for the type of container it was poured from. From the BLM: They are currently NOT enforcing a gas can/utility jug law. They have NEVER written a violation for the safe use of a gas can/utility jug for gasoline transportation/usage, no matter what type of cap/pour spout that is used. However, they will cite you for the unsafe handling/storage of any type of fuel container. If it's leaking or if you’re driving around and it’s flopping all over the back of your vehicle, you will be cited. The BLM also stated that they called numerous state agencies and could not find one specific case where a citation was written for using a utility jug for gasoline storage. So, you can be sited for the following, in the dunes or on the road:1. Carrying over 50 gallons of gasoline without a hazmat placard.2. A leaking gas storage container.3. Unsafe transportation of a fuel container.

I am sure there are other things you could be cited for, but using a VP Style utility jug in good working order for gasoline is not one of them. It is illegal for a retailer to sell this type of container advertising it for gasoline storage. Of course this is only for the state of California. Other states may vary.

Nails Both the BLM and State Parks (Ocotillo Wells) have banned burning wood with metal

(nails) in it. Most people camping in the desert agree, as I do, that this is a good rule. It's no fun getting a flat tire from a nail on the ground from a campfire.

Pallet fires are sensational to watch, but pallets contain an average of 90 nails. The nails from burning pallets last long after the fire is out. At the cleanup after our fun run, I walked the camping area with a magnet on a stick and a plastic bucket. After a couple of hours I picked up about 2 gallons of nails, enough for hundreds of flat tires. When you go camping out there, please bring wood with no nails in it. It's better for all of us. E

TDS Desert Safari 2015. I actually stalled and the truck flooded. Someone pulled me backwards and I got the truck started and drove the same line the whole way on my side! - Bubba Mckown, Linda Vista CA

Matteo Beckenbach’s Ranger exploring an Ocotillo Wells rut! - Heather Fox, El Cajon CA

The story is I drove out to the desert to visit my friend Steve Milligan (who owns the buggy you see here). Around midnight I was leaving to go home so I could get up early to play golf the next morning but I made a wrong turn just before the power poles right as you get to the actual road (this was out at Plaster City East) and ended up driving down the wash for waaay to long and finally got stuck. Steve had warned me before I left that he was turning off his cell phone so don’t get lost on the way out. So I sat in the car all night listening to music, I had two bottles of water to drink. Two different guys on quads came by during the night. One of them lived not far away and went and got me a drink about 3:30 A.M. Finally Steve was up and I called him about 6:30 and told him and he laughed and said “You liar, you’re on the course somewhere.” I finally convinced him I was lost somewhere and stuck so he and another guy in a Suzuki Samurai came and found me and pulled me out. I was probably not even a hundred feet from the asphalt road when I made the turn into the wash! - Curt Mixon, Encinitas CA

Kaitlin Rice managed to get herself stuck while circling camp in Ocotillo Wells. - Photo taken by Jason Rice, Beaumont CA

Central Pennsylvania, this past summer. It looks very mild in the photo. My buddy Doug snapped that candid pic of me. - John Hicks, Mercersburg PA

Larry and Ronnie Collie tryin’ to get through the bayou! Friends and family watch the show. Good fun! Collie Style. This was back home in Arkansas a few years back. They like to go muddin’ - Of course it was the highlight of the trip! - Ron Collie, Hollywood CA

Well, I wasn’t stuck, per se. I missed a corner on a ridge and rolled 3 times. Not hurt (except pride and wallet…). We got it on all fours, changed out a flat tire and drove over to Pesky’s Perch to say hi to Fud and have a cold drink. - Rick LaZelle, Descanso CA

THE BEST FIRST AID KITS AND A WHOLE LOT MORE

Tatum Sik (pronounced seek) has created quite a reputation for herself over the years. The young lady does

not like to lose, as she told me once, and has reiterated this with fesity resilience in every competition. This had become evident as she grew up over the years winning local motocross series, hucking her bike over one-hundred foot jumps at fourteen years old. She finished up a series title championship a few years ago, her leg so injured she could not kick the bike but instead had someone else start it so she could complete sthe day. The multiple Las Vegas Mini Moto Supercross Champion has at one time or another in varied disciplines defeated the likes of Women motocross greats Jessica Patterson and Ashley Fiolek. Since 2012 Tatum has worked her way into the number one spot in two different Grand Prix organizations, winning a tight battle in the World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS) in 2012 against then reigning champion Kayce Martinez. Tatum and her bike decided they wanted another number one, so she raced in eight of nine rounds the following year winning the Women’s Pro class six times and placing second twice for the 2013 WORCS Women’s Pro title. In 2014 Tatum was injured at the WORCS Taft round, and decided to race the AMA District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix series. She needed the traditional Big 6 summer break time for knee surgery in between race four and five. After surgery Tatum raced on to six Woman Expert GP wins for the 2014 Big 6 Women’s Expert title, her third GP title in three years. As I was saying, this lady does not have losing in her vocabulary, she may tumble and fall, rather hard at times, but the will to win dominates her internal landscape when under the green flag. Tatum was back at it for the 2015 WORCS and placed first in three of the nine rounds for the 2015 WORCS Women Pro Title, her third WORCS crown and fourth GP series title including Big 6 in four years. “I had some strange luck this year but it all worked out, had some bike problems but

nothing that made me DNF. I ended up re-injuring my knee that I had

surgery on last year over the summer break but it’s getting better,” Tatum said after the 2015 WORCS series. Her plans are tentative at this point but she will likely ride the 2016 WORCS in Women’s and Men classes, 2016 Big 6 GP and selected races. Tatum thanks MSR Racing, Pro Taper, Maxxis, Motorcyclesuperstore.com, Alpinestars, Engine Ice and all her friends and family for continued support. Robby Bell a former California Mini Motorcycle Club (CMMC) member, has lived up to the motto of the now defunct club: “Home of Champions.” CMMC may no longer be on the San Diego racing scene, but Robby sure is and has represented the motto well. We have followed his career since those days and were glad to have the Bell family’s Precision Concepts suspension company advertised in S&S Off Road Magazine for many years in the early days of their business. Racing motocross when he first started in 2001, Robby made two trips to the AMA Amateur National Championships in 2002 and 2004, receiving a well thought of seventh place in the 2004 250 Open B Stock class. Desert racing, Grand Prix and Endurance racing has become Robby’s forte. From 2005 Robby has won just about everything imaginable on the Western GP circuit. He is a multiple Baja race and series champion, has won the 2012 AMA Big 6 West Coast Grand Prix Pro Title, multiple Best in the Desert series titles, 2012 Adelanto Grand Prix Championships and several Glen Helen Endurance wins. Some may remember Chuck Miller, the former manager of Honda Racing. I was acquainted with his father, Leroy Miller, and back in 2008 we were discussing Robby after a race win at a Glen Helen SRA GP. He remarked that Robby had reached the elite with his Baja wins, and the fact he was winning most of the local GP’s and few could touch him at the time. That same year Robby’s wins included: first place San Felipe 250, first place Baja 500, first place Baja 1000 and the SCORE Class 22 Championship. Guess Mr. Leroy Miller knew what he was talking about. Robby is your consummate professional,

mightily fair to the competition on the track and always willing to give credit to his competition for good racing moves on the track, as well as good sportsmanship. Racing in WORCS since 2005, and going at the full series in 2006, he placed seventh in the Pro class points that year. The hardy irrepressible Robby has put his hat in the WORCS series ever since finally paying off with the 2013 WORCS Title. Robby was second

in the WORCS 2014 Pro class, but was ready to remedy that. For 2015 WORCS, Robby fired out of the chute, winning five of the first six rounds raced, the series crown appeared to be elementary to Robby winning his second title. Winning so often it was assumed to this reporter that would continue through the remainder of the season. Unfortunately disaster hit. While racing an AMA motocross round at Glen Helen in mid July, Robby had a bad crash sustaining extensive facial and internal injuries. Just three weeks later, the recovering Robby got back on his Precision Concepts prepared Kawasaki for round seven and finished in seventh, going on to finish eighth at round eight. Robby did what Robby does, moto through any difficulties that

appear in his way and he had a hospital stay full of difficulties. At round nine, Robby rode

with his unbreakable mental fortitude when all odds were against him after his crash. Finishing in second at this round he clinched the WORCS Pro Title with one round still remaining. Robby then went on to win the last round

of the WORCS series, then the Ridgecrest Big 6 GP in October, and took top Pro honors winning the 2015 Lake Elsinore Harvey Mushman GP for his third time in November. Can you say Superman? No more Baja racing for Robby as he dials his career down, and likely will be racing in the WORCS and Big 6 for 2016. Robby would like to thank his wife Katie, Mom Diane, Dad Bob, Mechanic Phil Valdez, Precision Concepts, FMF, MSR Racing, Shoei Helmets, SIDI Boots, Spy Goggle and all his friends and family. We congratulate Miss Tatum Sik and Mr. Robby Bell for their 2015 WORCS Pro Titles. E

Eddie Mulder’s West Coast Dirt Track SeriesWillow Springs International RacewayWalt James StadiumOctober 3-4, 2015By Karen GouldPhotos by Checkered Flag Photography

The Eddie Mulder West Coast Dirt Track Series’ Willow Springs 3/8 mile DG cushion events have been a favorite

for many throughout the years. A gathering referred to as a family reunion that brings out many riders looking forward to the big, fast, cushion track, endless bench racing and admiration of one another’s latest and greatest equipment. This weekend was exceptional! Many of flat track racing’s heavy hitters and longtime supporters honored Eddie and the series by coming out to rub elbows and watch the competition on the track. Chris Agajanian and the new Ascot trailer, Motion Pro and British Customs were on site showing and selling their wares. Storage Wars TV star Barry Weiss and legendary racer Sammy Tanner were seen wandering the pits as well. Eddie has always put forth exemplary efforts to bring substantial purses to his events, especially to his end of season Willow Springs event. This year, thanks to the generosity of the series sponsors, Digger Helm, Terry and Nancy Otton of Ramspur Winery, Mark and Randy Zimmerman of Specialty Fabrications, Inc, Rod Lake and more, the October 3rd and 4th weekend paid the second largest purse in flat track history. More than $80,000 was awarded to riders in the Pro class, 250 Open and the 80cc class. Along with the money, West Coast Dirt Track Series medals and plaques were given out. At the awards ceremony, Eddie’s custom is to shower the attendees with gifts provided by other series sponsors, Triumph North America, Motion Pro, British Customs, Maxima Racing Oils, Chris Agajanian’s Ascot, Barnett Clutches and Cables, Brown’s Cycles, C&J Racing Frames, Coventry Spares, JRC Engineering, Penton Racing Products, Works Performance, Today’s Cycle Coverage, S&S Off Road Magazine and more. The promo items excite everyone!

The West Coast Dirt Track Series always draws some of the Nation’s top AMA GNC 1 and 2 riders and this event was no exception. In attendance were National #1 Jared Mees, Sammy Halbert, Henry Wiles, Rob “Bugs” Pearson, Chad Cose, the Bauman brothers, Kayl Kolkman, Jeffrey Carver and many more. Twenty-eight Pro riders competed for a spot on the 14 rider grid in the main events Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s program began by honoring three riders who sadly passed away this year. A backwards lap rider’s parade was held saluting Don “Squatty” Surplus, a long time, very close friend of Eddie Mulder; #1 desert rider, Mike Gonzales, a West Coast Dirt Track Series Vintage 500 rider and good friend of Jeff Gonzales; and Jethro Halbert, National #69. Eddie carried the U.S. flag, riding between Sammy Halbert and Jeff Gonzales in their honor. A few of the younger riders stand out as a result of their skill and tenacity on and off the track. At this event, youth riders Clayton Williams and James Alexander topped the youth 60cc, Open Amateur and 250 Open classes all weekend. Each of them topped the podium in at least one event both days. Williams crossed the finish line first in the Open Amateur A main and battling with Grant Holmes in the 250 Open Class both days, taking those wins. Holmes won the 80cc and Open Amateur B events Sunday. Travis Petton IV finished second both days in the 80cc class behind Zaden Flores on Saturday and Grant Holmes Sunday. Twenty-four riders showed up to compete in the Open Amateur class. The class was split

into A and B main events to accommodate them all and the riders ranged in age from up and coming youngsters in their teens to some of the veteran riders like Jack Jones and Bill Wright. The class also included Kenjiro Tsuji from Japan and female riders, Julia Rankin and Allison Stacey, both very talented in two wheeled competition. Clayton Williams rode in the front of the pack all six laps in the Open Amateur A main but Rankin who was in third the first lap got around Paul Ott to finish second. Ott finished third on Saturday but on Sunday he topped the podium followed by Williams and Dillon Allen who flew in from Idaho specifically for this event. Saturday’s Open Amateur B main gave veteran rider Jack Jones the chance to shine leading Michael Hill and Andrew Myers to the checkers. Twenty-eight pro riders came out for a chance at some of the big money. They rode heats, semis and the fourteen rider main event. The top rider was taken from each heat to make the grid for the Specialty Fabrications Dash for Cash. Saturday’s heat winners Jeffrey Carver, Briar Bauman, Sammy Halbert and Jared Mees powered off the start and into turn one in the first lap led by Carver and followed by Halbert, Mees and Bauman. Carver never looked back twisting the throttle to a very happy victory aboard his Ron Wood Rotax and proudly took Mark Zimmerman for a victory lap. Sunday’s Dash was the largest single payout of the weekend with a Specialty Fabrications purse of $20,000. Sunday’s riders were Carver, Halbert, Mees and Chad Cose. Mees took the lead from the start with Halbert on his back wheel and Carver close in third. Halbert, not to be outdone by Mees took the lead on the back straight and finished first. Mees,

Carver and Cose followed. Halbert has ridden with his brother Jethro’s plate #69 since Jethro passed. To celebrate Sunday’s victory lap with Zimmerman, Sammy stopped and picked up Jethro’s son Caleb and he took the victory lap with them. Jeffrey Carver was hot this weekend taking three big wins. His Ron Wood Rotax easily passed Mees in lap five and put him in position to compete wheel to wheel with Halbert trading places for the front twice in Saturday’s Ramspur Winery Open Pro main event. Carver rode with tenacity and skill setting the mark for the rest of the class. On Sunday in the Digger Helm Open pro main event, Carver took the lead from the start with Halbert and Mees following. Mees lost his face shield midway into the race riding the remainder with no shield finishing third. Jared Vanderkoi and Briar Bauman followed them to the finish. Standing on his bike to greet the crowd Carver was the happiest man in the house! Digger Helm was taken for the last victory lap of the day, feeding his passion for flat track that he has had throughout most of his life. As always the climax of each day was the award ceremonies where Eddie and Jodi Mulder honored Digger Helm, Mark and Randy Zimmerman, Rod Lake,Terry Otton and Gary Ritchie with plaques of appreciation for their contributions to the West Coast Dirt Track Series and flat track racing. Riders were paid and given well-earned medals and plaques with thank you speeches to all of their supporters and sponsors and sponsor gifts were bestowed on the crowd. The gift giving is always exiciting! SCFTA Flat TrackOctober 10, 2015, Round 10Perris Raceway, Perris, California

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

We now have reached the witching hour of the 2015 Southern California Flat Track Association’s (SCFTA)

twelve round series. Approximately one-hundred and fifty entries are ready to stage up at this

round ten of the twelve round series. It’s a warm Saturday night as we delve into the three remaining rounds of the series with several scrums for series titles starting to heat up. Travis Petton IV has his own weather system at the Perris Raceway Flat Track, due to all the turbulence he causes by his sheer speed and force to win. Frank Flores braves the Petton IV winds and has made a statement in his regular top three starts, that he is on the way to matching Petton IV. Frank has the lap two lead with Petton IV pushing the inside line hard in second, Alyssa Flores racing well, off the start is now in third. Petton finally speeds around Frank for the lead and 85 Open win, Frank second and Alyssa third. With two rounds remaining, Petton IV needs twenty-five points to clinch the title over Frank Flores. Frank had the holeshot in the 85cc 2-Stroke Amateur and held the lead most of the race, but Petton IV went under him on turn one late in the race for his second win of the night, Frank second and Alyssa third. Petton needs nineteen points to secure the 85cc 2-Stroke Amateur title over Frank Flores.

Meanwhile Alyssa Flores holds a flimsy one point lead over Jaycee Jones in the Women’s class and that battle will go to the end. Bill’s Pipe’s Dan Kane is a seasoned racer who continues

to throw down on the green flag as he has throughout his life. Kane, a 2007 SCFTA +50 Champion, has memories of tracks like Corona Raceway, Lake Elsinore, and Ascot where he was part of the flat track and TT scene for many years. Kane and his flat track prepped Suzuki DRZ 400, are still a common and welcome fixture on the Southern California sliding scene. Line them up for the Super Senior +60, Kane motors through the first two turns with the lead but he has some fast ones behind him in former SCFTA Pro Champion Richard Pollock standing in second, and Southland Racing’s Jim Wood in third. Wood dices his way into second near the end of the six lap race, Kane holding

on and maintaining consistency in blocking Wood, but Wood is strong arming the race and presses a pass coming out of turn four for the win. Kane pulled out all the stops but unable to block Wood, he still takes second, Pollock just off the pace in third at the checkers. Kane needs just two points to secure the +60 Senior title, and will accomplish that by finishing at round eleven or twelve. Rosa Sign’s racer Jim Rosa, part of the SCFTA fabric for several years, has had his good times and bad times as a long time participant in the Vet +35 Expert class at the Perris dirt track. This season Rosa has lined up with racers like AMA’s Hall of Fame member John Kocinski, and keeps on ripping as he did at the turn of the green light at the onset of the Vet +35 Expert Main. Rosa tore off at the front of the pack with Kevin Keeran, driving down from the Northern California city of Concord. Another series nemesis of Rosa, is Paul Ott in third. Rosa hangs on to the lead in style and races in for the win, Keeran second and Ott third. Rosa also locks up the Vet +35 Expert title for another of his many

SCFTA number 1 plates, Congratulations Jim! Southland Racing’s John Vanderlaan, has had a near complete season to dial in Perris Raceway’s circle, and he sure seems to be getting more comfortable at this tenth round. The Salinas, California racer has won four 2015 SCFTA Pro Mains. Racing against AMA National number twenty-three in Jeff Carver, Vanderlaan’s attempt to make it five SCFTA Pro wins in a row appeared to be in jeopardy. He settled that concern after Carver leads into turn one but Vanderlaan has been working the inside well on most of his starts and assumes the point out of turn two on lap one. Vanderlaan skillfully stamps out any charge from Carver for the win, Carver second, third goes to Colt Foster. Vanderlaan takes the SCFTA Pro points lead by three points over Colt Foster, and it is down to the last two rounds for the SCFTA Pro title between Foster and Vanderlaan. Please go to www.scftaracing.com/ for complete results and information on the oncoming 2016 SCFTA Championship Series.

Round 7 of MSR Presents The 2015 D- 37 Big 6 Grand Prix SeriesOctober 31, 2015, Gorman CA., Day 1Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

The Quail Canyon Special Event area at Hungry Valley SVRA in Gorman was a flurry of Grand Prix liveliness on this

Halloween weekend. The reason: the 30th Annual Prospectors Grand Prix a part of the AMA MSR District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series, was in town. We are now entering the last two rounds of the eight round series, with this seventh round held on an approximate eight mile course utilizing the hills, the motocross section and the surrounding scrub and

drainage areas on existing trails. This is day one coverage of the two-day Big 6 GP, let’s race. KTM’s Paul Krause has won all five rounds raced in the Magnum Heavyweight Expert. Racing with a broken hand at this round he still ended up with a fourth and needs a twelfth place or better to win the title which should be a workable task for the off-road

hero. Back to today’s race, Neo Oil’s Jerry Black came into the outside of turn one and closed the door on AS Racing/TBT Suspension’s Steve Williams and the race was on, setting up to be one of the best battles of the weekend with Black in the lead and Williams just out of his dust in second. In the back section Williams takes the lead but Black counter attacks and holds the pace as they end lap one. That unrelenting growl of Williams’ Kawasaki persisted in back of Black as they jousted for the point in lap two. The steadfast

pursuit of Black by Williams pays off and he takes the lead by the end of lap two. Black remains dogged in his chase to retake the lead from Williams, with a one second deficit on lap three and finishing just three seconds back in second at the checkers. Williams wins his first 2015 50+ Magnum Expert in five tries and the race win as well, Black second, Frank Charolla third, Krause, and Greg Bender wrapping up the top five in class and race. The elite event of the Big 6 GP is the West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP). There are two versions the first being the WCGP Novice and Beginner 45-minute race, and the second is the WCGP Pro, Expert, and Intermediate 90-minute GP. In the WCGP 45-minute inter-class battle Heavyweight Novice Johnny Degen rode through the scoring area in first on lap one but classmate, Cory Rash, was about eight bike lengths back in second and moved into the lead on lap two. Tangling with other racers on the start and going down, WCGP Heavyweight Novice Steve Adams was not starting out so well as he remounted at dead last after his fall. Racing in three previous WCGP races, his results had improved consecutively from eighth to fourth, with his last race being a second but his step up to first was now in jeopardy. Adams, dusted himself off and picked his way through the leaders by lap two, now in second, twelve seconds off the leader but Adams was going to take care of that. He roars through lap three taking over the race and gains an eighteen second lead over second place Rash. Adams leaves nothing to chance winning by thirty seconds, over second place 250 Novice Kenny Owens (first in class), Rash third, 250 Novice Benny Landry fourth, 200 Novice Hayden Hintz placing fifth in race overall and first in class. An ecstatic Adams wins his first Big 6 GP and WCGP in a study of diligence, determination and resilience. The 90-minute WCGP is ready to get off the line and Precision Concepts racer Justin Seeds surges into the clean air. Teammate Robby Bell, takes the middle road when several racers swing

wide on turn one splitting the pack and behind Seeds he goes. The Seeds-Bell train got rolling as series points leader, OX Motorsports Colton Udall, begins to make his way up to the powerful Seeds-Bell duo. Seeds holding firm in first with Bell just outside his dust in second, and Udall sitting outside of Bell’s dust in third on lap two. To this reporter it looked like Udall was fading back in the early part of the race despite the lap times, but he may have been just merely playing a GP chess game. While in third on lap four Udall made a pit stop, catching the competition off guard and his crew as he pitted, barking instructions to the surprised crew. His reported plan was to pit early with a calculation that he would have enough fuel to finish and make the pass on the leaders when they pitted, in what turned out to be a nine lap GP. Coming out of the pits Udall dialed up the speed and was back up to the two leaders by the end of lap four in third and just eight seconds back of Seeds. On lap six, Udall’s plan came to fruition as he took the lead and roared on for a dominating lead and his fourth WCGP Pro win of the series. Bell runs a steady course for second, John Burr Cycles racer Ryan Reina takes third after Seeds had a mechanical problem. Colton Udall’s WCGP Pro win brings his point total beyond reach of any contenders with one round remaining according to this reporter’s calculations, and Mr. Udall is unofficially your 2015 Big 6 WCGP Pro Champion. Trevor Stewart raced to a fifth overall and his second WCGP Pro II win in the series. For complete information on the final round of the series to be held at Lake Elsinore,

Round 7 of MSR Presents The 2015 D- 37 Big 6 Grand Prix SeriesNovember 1, 2015, Gorman CA., Day 2

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

On this crisp November Sunday morning in the hills of Gorman we begin day two of our AMA 30th Annual Prospectors Grand

Prix, Round 7 of the MSR 2015 District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series. After this day of racing we have the crowning eighth round to be

held at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Complex in early December. The West Coast Grand Prix Pro Series Title was decided on Saturday as Ox Motorsports racer Colton Udall, won his fourth 2015 WCGP Pro GP in route to clinching the 2015 WCGP Pro Title. On with day two coverage of Big 6 GP’s round seven in Gorman, let’s race. Round seven was very good to Prospector’s MC Club member Hayden Hintz. In Sunday’s Super Mini Advanced GP, Hintz rode in second in the wake of

Jake Alvarez as they passed the Prospector’s scoring checkpoint at the end of lap one. Hintz has his second Super Mini win of the season in his sights as he slows through the scoring line on the third run around the circuit in first place, Alvarez in second. Hintz has the winning fever at this event and keeps a steady hot pace, inching away from Alvarez for an eleven second win. Alvarez closes his GP with a second and Corey Skaggs riding alone in third from the end of lap one to the checkers.

On Saturday’s WCGP 45 minute Novice and Beginner race, Hintz came through the pack from fifteenth to fifth overall at the finish of the four lap GP, winning the WCGP 200 Novice in the inter-class GP format. Hintz is also in the thick of the series title battles in both classes with the Lake Elsinore round looming. After a second place in the WCGP 250 Novice and fourth overall on Saturday, Benny Landry, was in the hunt for his first Lightweight-I Novice win on Sunday. Racing in the Beginner class for the first three rounds, Landry moved on up to the Novice class at round four placing second in the Lightweight-I Novice. Landry has arrived in what appears to be his first season racing with the Big 6 GP. His will to win seems boundless at this point, racing past lap one with a seven second lead over Heavyweight Novice, Johnny Degen. Lightweight-I Novice Kenny Owens throttled the pack on lap two

ringing in at second on the scoring table after being tenth at the end of lap one. Despite the charging Owens, Landry kept his winning path, finishing four laps with a minute plus lead for the race win. Owens finishes in for second after buffering a furious charge by Lightweight-1 Novice points leader Chase Brubaker, Brubaker third, two seconds back of Owens. Degen is fourth in race overall and first in Heavyweight Novice, Dylan Carter fifth overall and first in the Lightweight-II Novice. In race fifteen which is the forty-five minute Expert and Intermediate race and the traditional last contest of the event, Josh Nunes had his gunfire support in order and fired dead on salvos at the attacking forces pounding out the lead on the inter-class race. The Heavyweight Expert Nunes was ten seconds in front of fellow classmate, Sage Vincent. Maxxis racer Dalton Shirey was bringing it in as he, along with Nick Stover, powered up behind Nunes at the end of two. Nunes has the point, Stover and Shirey in a 1-2-3 cluster. Shirey zips past Stover and Nunes for the lead as we check into lap three, Stover second and Nunes third. Shirey races his own path to the checkers

in five laps and the race win, Stover comes in at second, Nunes third, Vincent fourth and Troy Armstrong. Dalton takes the Lightweight Expert win, Stover second and Zach Teno third. Nunes takes the Heavyweight Expert win, Vincent second and Armstrong third. Nunes also finished a very good seventh in the WCGP Pro class on Saturday and is looking like pure speed as 2016 approaches.. CALVMX/100% Vintage MotocrossOctober 10, 2015, Round 3Cahuilla Creek MX Park, Anza, CA

By Steve CaroPhotos by Kathryn Caro

Round three of the CALVMX 2015 VMX second series returned the racers to Cahuilla Creek MX Park. Clear skies

with cooling breezes blunted the predicted triple digit temperatures as the modified Cahuilla Creek Vet Track hosted ten motos of vintage and post-vintage racing action. Continuing the CALVMX tradition of saluting past era racers, Trey Jorski, a nationally ranked AMA pro from the mid 1970’s was saluted, with an image taken during his racing days gracing the trophy cups presented to class winners. A native of Oklahoma City OK, Jorski was a top ranked local area pro by 1972 racing 125, 250 and 500cc machines in Oklahoma and Texas. He moved onto the national circuit by 1974 and ran consistently with legends such as Marty Smith, Brad Lackey and Jimmy Weinert. Racking up numerous top ten scores, Jorski was also the National Champion in Mexico and nine time Oklahoma state champion. Employed in the aerospace industry, Jorski still competes in both vintage and modern races. Tribute was also paid to Mike Owen, a pioneer in the sport of vintage racing who in recent years served as the director of the traveling Legends and Heroes of Motocross exhibit seen at supercross events across the country. A three time AHRMA champion, Owen passed away earlier in the year. At the pre-race ceremony, Owen’s daughter Lindsay spoke of the weekends she spent with her dad at the races and of working with him in the Legends presentations. Owen will always be remembered for his immaculately prepared machines and near photographic memory for the smallest details. Honoree Jorski was on the gate for moto one of the Marty Tripes 100cc Works Revenge class. Although technically the only entrant in the Factory Works Pro class, Yamaha

mounted Jorski engaged in a spirited duel with series regular David MacDonald (Yam),who was entered in the Factory Works Expert division. Displaying the fluid style that garnered him support from Kawasaki during his professional years, Jorski was never more than a few bike lengths behind Jorski in both motos. CZ mounted Clark Jones is always a threat in the Vintage 50 Plus Expert class whenever he enters a vintage race. Today was no exception as Jones added to his victory tally with a two-moto sweep of the class. Making a welcomed return to vintage racing was Mike LaPaglia (CZ) who kept Jones honest in both motos and

took a well-deserved second overall, with Mark Wood (CZ) rounding out the podium in third. While Clark Jones swept the Expert class, fellow CZ racer Tim McIntyre mirrored Jones’ success with the overall win in the Vintage 50 Plus Intermediates, while Tim Vasquez and Charlie Richardson added to the CZ victory tally with overall wins in 50 Plus Vintage Novice and 60 Plus Vintage Expert respectively with the classes running concurrently during the fourth race/moto on the schedule. In recent years, Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate has become one of the most popular pre-1975 classes at CALVMX events. The lineup featured European brands CZ, Husqvarna, Maico and Bultaco. Japan was

represented by the famous Honda Elsinore. Moto one saw Mike Padilla (Hon) grab the holeshot as the pack powered its way onto the main portion of the Cahuilla course, trailed by Pat Irvin (Bul) and Tim McIntyre (CZ). Padilla’s speed kept him in front of the pack and close to the Vintage Sportsman 500 Experts who were on the track at the same time. Padilla’s lead went unchallenged as he sped to the moto win, followed by Irvin and McIntyre. Padilla holeshot moto two’s start and quickly built a lead of nearly 10 seconds ahead of the class. Behind Padilla, Irvin and McIntyre vied for second with McIntyre moving into the runner-up spot on lap three. With Padilla sprinting to the overall win, the race to watch was the McIntyre-Irvin duel as Irvin kept McIntyre in his sights throughout the moto. At the checkers, it was McIntyre nabbing second

overall with Irvin taking a well-deserved third on his Spanish built machine.

Other winners on the day included Nick LaPaglia who also made a return to vintage racing along with his father Mike. The younger LaPaglia dominated Vintage Sportsman 125 Expert and Noleen 125 Vintage Works Pro classes on his immaculate CZ. His speed and style around the

Cahuilla course were impressive. Young Nick could easily be the poster boy for vintage racing as he proved great racing doesn’t require a $10G investment in modern machinery. Joining the LaPaglia’s in the winners’ circle included James Fryslie (CZ) in Vintage Sportsman 500 Intermediate, Marty Eisen (Yam) in Vintage Sportsman 250 Novice, Kitty Hoole (Yam) in Women’s Expert, Greg Landers (Yam) in Vintage Open Age Expert and Brad Morrison (Mai) in 50+ GP Expert. Check the Coming Events in this magazine for upcoming CALVMX events, where there are classes available for all age and skill levels and bikes (plus three-wheelers) of any year. E

CALVMXExhibition Flat TrackOctober 31 - November 1, 2015Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian FacilityCampo CA

By Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn Caro

Based on the success of their first effort and with a five race series planned for 2016, the staff of CALVMX returned

for an encore flat track weekend at the superb Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility in Campo, California. The weekend gave flat track racers and motocross crossovers more time on an oval track and enabled club staff to address any problems that might arise in the myriad of details involved with staging an event prior to their inaugural 2016 series. Being the Halloween weekend, many riders got into the spirit of the holiday by dressing in costume. Joining in the fun was Inter-Am Pioneer and recently appointed AHRMA Southwest Regional Coordinator Bill Silverthorn who dressed as Raggedy

Ann. Silverthorn reported that driving to the event drew looks from other drivers who first noticed his vintage Husqvarna and then were

shocked when they saw the driver! Silverthorn conducted tech inspection in costume and then switched into his normal racing gear. Two, three and four wheeled machines filled the pit area throughout the weekend. Ranging from purpose built dirt track machines, motocross bikes converted to DTX format and knobby tired MX bikes with their front brakes removed, it was a cross section of machines from all eras of flat track racing. One machine carrying a true race pedigree was the early 1960’s Harley Davidson 350 Sprint ridden by long-time flat track racer John Apple. Apple related the machine had originally belonged to San Diego legend Cal Rayborn. Considered to be one of the finest all-round racers of any era, Apple said Rayborn campaigned the machine for several seasons in the 1960s. Essentially all original other than an aluminum Japanese brand gas tank (Apple has the original) the brakeless, rigid rear frame machine was a piece of living history of the sport of flat track racing. Lap times were extremely quick on the short 1/8-mile course, often measured in seconds for many of the intermediate and expert level competitors. Flat track regular Byron Kukla (Hon) showed fine form with his win in the Open Expert Division, while former factory pro-motocrosser Scott Burnworth (Oss/Hon) once again dominated several classes, taking wins in 50 Plus Expert, Adult Mini Expert, and 250 Expert classes during the Saturday portion of the weekend. Motocross regular Gary DeForest (CZ) enjoyed his Saturday with wins in 70’s and 80’s Singles Expert along with a second in 250 Expert. Another motocross veteran, who readily admitted to having never raced flat track before Saturday, was Gary Faxon. Despite having never done circle track, Faxon took wins in 60 Plus Expert and Open Knobbie Expert on his CZ. Spectacular racing both days occurred in the three-wheeler classes. Taking their ongoing battle for supremacy from the motocross course to the oval, Tom Decrescente and Tanner Pies held nothing back and put on bar-to-bar battles both days. Hanging far off the left side of their vintage Honda 250R’s, the two threw the biggest slides around the course in both the heat races and finals. The two swapped wins in the finals with Pies taking the gold on Saturday and Decrescente topping Sundays’ finale. The most distinctive race team of the

weekend was the members of the Booze Fighters Motorcycle Club. For those unfamiliar with the story, the Booze Fighters were the basis for the famous Life Magazine photo (later proven to have been staged) and Marlon Brando movie The Wild One. Both highly inaccurate and, in the case of the movie, wildly fictionalized, both purported to be based on a report of a motorcycle rally in the town of Hollister, California in the late 1940’s. A story of rowdy behavior, fights, etc. became grossly exaggerated with every successive remembrance and thus was born the nearly 70-year-old myth of what actually occurred. Booze Fighter members Ken Shilling (Yam) and Shawn Chamblee (Hon) bear no resemblance to their movie counterparts. Clad in their distinctive white/green leathers, both showed they are as adept on a flat tracker as they are on a street going V-Twin. Shilling took to the track for two classes both days, while Shawn doubled that with four entries both days. Competing on bona-fide Class C machinery, Shilling took wins in 50 Plus Intermediate and 70’s Singles Intermediate both days, while Chamblee took wins in Open Novice, 70’s Singles Novice, 35 Plus Novice and Post Vintage 600 Novice. A third Booze Fighter also took to the track on Saturday as Brian Trum carefully circled the course on a diminutive Yamaha RT-100 in Adult Mini Beginner. His efforts garnered him second place behind John Gangitano (Suz). Classed as Powder Puffs, several lady racers were also in attendance and motocrosser Randi Schaller (Yam) powered her way to double wins in the Powder Puff Novice class Saturday and Sunday, with Chris Roysdon (Husq) and Kerri Kress (Suz) rounding out the podium with Schaller on Saturday. Making their first appearance on an oval course, Powder Puff Beginners Lori Kneebone (Hon) and Debbi Vrettas (Hon) split wins, with Vrettas taking the Saturday final and Kneebone Sunday’s event. A trio of brothers took to the track during the weekend in several classes. Braydin, Daltin and Larry Collie have flat track in their genetic code, as their grandfather, Larry Collie, was one of the top flat track competitors on the west coast in the 1960’s and 70’s. All three took wins in the various 16 and under and 12 and under youth classes during the weekend Visit www.calvmx.net for more info on next year’s series. E
