Nov. 25: St. Catherine of Alexandria d. circa 310 According to the Legend of St. Catherine, this young woman converted to Christianity after receiving a vision. At the age of 18, she debated 50 pagan philosophers. Amazed at her wisdom and debating skills, they became Christians—as did about 200 soldiers and members of the emperor’s family. All of them were martyred. Sentenced to be executed on a spiked wheel, Catherine touched the wheel and it shattered. She was beheaded. Centuries later, angels are said to have carried the body of Saint Catherine to a monastery at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Devotion to her spread as a result of the Crusades. She was invoked as the patroness of students, teachers, librarians and lawyers. Catherine is one of the 14 Holy Helpers, venerated especially in Germany and Hungary. Reflection The pursuit of God’s wisdom may not lead to riches or earthly honors. In Catherine’s case, this pursuit contributed to her martyrdom. She was not, however, foolish in preferring to die for Jesus rather than live only by denying him. All the rewards that her tormentors offered her would rust, lose their beauty, or in some other way become a poor exchange for Catherine’s honesty and integrity in following Jesus Christ. Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the Patron Saint of: lawyers, librarians, philosophers, students, and teachers.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global poli cal upheaval and the de-Chris anizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope explained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church some mes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a me when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Originally on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year. Fresh from bap sm’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our iden ty. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. Dec. 7, Sacred Heart, Columbia

Dec. 9, Guiding Star Mid-MO, St. James

Dec. 14, Mary Immaculate Church, Kirksville

Come and learn about the Creighton Model Fertility Care System and the medical applications called NaProTechnology. This is chemical-free reliable family planning to achieve or avoid pregnancy and to monitor women’s health, with medical applications that find the cause and treat it to make the woman healthy. Perhaps you are tired of taking the birth control pill for every reproductive problem or of having your daughters on this

steroid for acne or cramps? Or being told that IVF is your only solution for infertility? In addition, these systems are totally in accord with Church teaching affirming that

there is no conflict between faith and science – good medicine and Church teaching. Contact: 573-443-3470 or 816-550-8789, [email protected].

A Steward’s Way A Small Group Faith Sharing Experience

“We are be er together as one body in Christ, may we grow together in faith, hope and charity through this ac vity and future ac vi es.” The four small group sessions will include prayers, gospel reading, discussion ques ons, and singing. It will be a way for us to truly be in prayer and thanksgiving as we prepare for the celebra on of Jesus’ birth. We can step out of the familiar prepara ons for Christmas for 45-60 minutes each week and really focus on what is truly important to build God’s kingdom here and now. It will also foster rela onship-building within our parish here at St. Peter and Paul. When we pray, learn, and discuss together we come to know each other be er and we draw closer as a loving church - as we love and serve each other and the community.
