• Greetings and Welcome to our seminar for Unit 7.

Now for my Upper Michigan slide of the Week. This is to me an interesting one. No women worked in the operations of the

Jackson Iron Company, but there were a lot of women and children in the company town of Fayette, MI. The women here worked in traditional roles of the time for women. This location was very isolated and could only be reached by boat or on foot in 1880.

DB Question 1:

Many important reforms were achieved during the Progressive Era, including women's suffrage and some legislation that hoped to alleviate some of the deplorable working conditions many women faced.  What types of arguments did white women use to gain support for the reforms they hoped to achieve and how did these arguments differ for women of other races? Do you think these arguments were valid? Why or why not? How did the reforms sought for women reflect deeply held basic assumptions about gender roles?

DB Question 2:Review the images and text on pages 570-583

of Through Women’s Eyes. How did the Great Depression and World War II affect women’s work lives? How are these changes reflected in the advertisements and documentary photographs? Are these realistic images or is there a message they are intended to convey?

Project: You will submit your thesis statement and annotated bibliography for your final project.

In a few sentences, describe your topic for the final paper and the approach you plan to take. Include a thesis statement which tells the reader what the overall objective of your paper will be. You should also provide an annotated bibliography, listing at least three sources you will be using in your paper, with a short description of each source. At least one of your sources must be something other than a webpage. A newspaper or magazine article that you have accessed via the internet would count as a non-webpage source.

Are you clear about what an annotated bibliography is?

This is the time to go over it. What about a thesis statement? The whole project for this week does not

need to be longer than one full page – but still put a title on it and a page number.

I have an example of a good annotated bibliography in the Doc Sharing section of your class menu (tabs).
