Creating inspirational and sustainable leadershipSSAT believes that for a world-class school system, we need outstanding schools with outstanding leaders at all levels. Our nationally-accredited leadership programmes support schools in developing the next generation of outstanding school leaders.

Programmes are designed and delivered by leading headteachers and practitioners, as well as incorporating recognised experts from SSAT and its wider networks.

Through our programmes, SSAT wants to create school and system leaders who aspire to be:

• always learning and thinking about our profession, debating openly and agreeing the purposes of education

• shaping and leading our own professional vision, working in partnership to design and operate a system by which these purposes can be realised in practice

• autonomous, within the realities of the education system, establishing the criteria to ensure robust system accountability

• valued and respected by all stakeholders for their insights and practices.

Following on from outstanding experiences at regional and national SSAT events I decided to enrol on the New Headteacher programme to support my development as a new headteacher. “Amazing, invaluable and enlightening” are just some of the words I would use to describe the opportunities and experiences from the programme.

Executive Headteachers

Headteachers with responsibility for school improvement beyond their own institution will undoubtedly find the SSAT Executive Headteachers programme an outstanding professional development opportunity.

The role of the executive headteacher within a federation or partnership framework is still relatively new and presents many challenges and opportunities for the incumbent leader. Having the opportunity to see how established executive headteachers have approached this in their own particular context proved invaluable and certainly helped me reflect on my own situation and consider the next steps for our newly formed learning trust.

This two-year programme considered many aspects of system leadership and examined the range of leadership models and structures that are emerging across the current educational landscape. It was particularly useful to visit outstanding academies and see first-hand how talented leaders had worked within the chain construct, committing to influencing more than one school without compromising on quality. I would certainly recommend this programme to any headteacher considering taking on leadership of more than one school.

David Sutton, Executive Principal, Maltby Learning Trust

Programme overviewOutstanding schools need leaders who can make the shift from translating and delivering whole-school policies on the ground, to creating and leading new school improvement strategies that can transform learning across the curriculum. This programme is designed for middle leaders who aspire to senior leadership. You will build the skills needed for the transition, developing practical and effective strategies to personalise and transform learning, and gaining skills that will enable you to develop other leaders in your school and build on the success and impact you are already making in your current role.

Year one focuses on developing the role of leadership and leading learning. Year two develops strategic leadership skills, preparing participants for the move into the senior leadership team.

Professional inquiry assignmentParticipants are expected to engage in a school-based professional inquiry assignment which will be written up and shared within the cohort (1000 words).

Aspiring Senior LeadersA word from your cohort leaderStephen Tierney, Executive Director of the Blessed Edward Bamber Catholic Multi Academy Trust and Chair of the Vision 2040 group.

With the ticking time bomb of recruitment to senior leadership and headship already hitting many schools, succession planning has never been more important. We are all facing this challenge as the number of headteachers and senior leaders about to retire reaches epidemic proportions. Many schools are developing a ‘grow your own’ mentality to ensure a ready supply of highly capable and skilled people able to step into senior leadership. It is from this pool of senior leaders that our schools’ future headteachers will emerge.

Politicians keep trying to change schools by altering the system. We know it is only by working

at a school level, from the inside out, that we can truly redesign our schools.

High-quality, visionary and innovative middle and senior leaders are increasingly in demand to lead this redesign. The aim of the SSAT Aspiring Senior Leaders programme is to help you develop your staff. We seek to inspire, educate and develop the understanding and attitudes of mind required by participants so that they can go back to their schools and make a real difference to your young people’s lives.

To gain SSAT programme certification, delegates are required to attend 75% of events and complete the schools-based inquiry assignment.

Aspiring Senior Leaders

I have to be honest I signed up for this course in slight trepidation, especially with the venues being up and down the country. However I am glad to say that my fears were unfounded as I have met some lovely people, made friends and learned how to lead others, and appreciate the strategic avenues and complexities of successful leaders in school.

Our job, in my opinion, is a vocation. Being with the young people, the diversity of the visits gave me a great sense of pride in seeing how our youngsters learn and progress in sometimes hard to reach areas. I witnessed some fantastic teachers who are undoubtedly our future aspiring leaders.

Without the grounding that this course provided I would not have secured my position as a senior leader and for that I would just like to say thanks!

Programme overviewMiddle leaders have an essential role in translating the school’s vision into practice and are often described as the ‘engine room’ of school improvement. Outstanding schools have high-quality middle leaders and seek to continuously develop and build these individuals into high-performing teams.

The National Award for Middle Leaders (NAML) offers 10 course modules for delivering the foundations of successful leadership. These modules cover all the key middle leadership responsibilities. Each module is designed to be two hours in length, delivered as a twilight session or combined as extended training.

Module delivery is flexible and a selection of modules can be chosen and configured to provide a personalised course to meet the particular needs of schools.

The NAML is delivered by SSAT-approved licensed schools and trainers across the country who will make courses and modules available in your area. Should you wish an SSAT consultant to deliver a bespoke course to your school, this can be arranged by contacting the SSAT leadership team on [email protected].

The NAML is certificated by SSAT and provides routes to Masters’ level accreditation through the University of Nottingham and Lead Practitioner status. Middle leaders are expected to complete a school improvement project and professional learning journal to evidence the impact of course learning.
