SSIPtheopportunityBuilding bridges between education and employment

Many students find a European sustainableeducation experience to be a real catalyst intheir lives; opening their minds to the manyreal possibilities for a sustainable future, and in finding a sense of direction for theirfuture careers.

They can also find it very difficult, in getting theirfirst foot on the employment ladder. While youthemployment is a major challenge, we also needto mobilise our people and skills, like never before,in meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Coupled with this, students may find their Europeanlearning experience can be all too brief. A goodnumber express a desire to return, and to findsuitable work/project experience within a Europeancontext – to enable the practical side of theireducation to become more complete, and to offerpotential employers even greater benefits of theirskills and experience.

Employers, likewise, can find it difficult to findthe best recruits, with the right skills, to help theirsustainability projects deliver the best impact. This initiative provides access to a pool of verybright and motivated students that will have alreadyundergone leading-edge sustainability training– hungry to make a real difference.

Having mentored and supported students on aninformal basis, during the last two semesters, itseems like there is a real opportunity here – to offera bespoke internship/mentoring program – for themost capable and motivated students – and, to helpinspire and train tomorrow’s sustainability leaders.
