The travelers visited the sites sacred to Sisters of St. Joseph everywhere, including Lourdes, Toulouse, Le Puy, Lyon, Annecy, and Paris. They were able to attend Mass in each city’s Cathedral/church and experienced wonderful liturgies. They began in Lourdes where they participated in the baths, the procession and prayers. They stopped in Toulouse for a city tour, then traveled to Le Puy where they spent three days at the International Centre of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Rita led the walking tours in Le Puy. S ixteen eager pilgrims made the journey to Le Puy, France under the guidance of SSJ
Associates Directress, Sister Rita Baum, June 16 – 26. Le Puy is the French city in which the first
Sisters of St. Joseph were
established in 1650. The spiritual journey came from a request by a Central Florida Associate and was supported by requests from several others. Eight Associates, three
family members, three friends, and Sisters of St. Joseph Rita and
Kathleen Power accepted the
challenge of pilgrimage.

At an early planning meeting,
Sister Kathleen Power introduced many suggestions for a proper preparation for pilgrimage: prayer, activities, selection of items to be left in places visited, etc. She

Retreat in our daily life
Page 2 On the Journey
D uring these summer months our Sisters take the time for
retreat and some days of vacation. The summer heat causes all of us to slow down and move at a lighter pace. I have been reflecting lately on what these summer days are calling us to in the fall, winter and springtime of our lives. Are not our hearts always burning within us? The love of Christ impels us to run to Him each and every day. We retreat into times of prayer through-out the day, we take times of rest that help us to settle into being aware of God’s presence, and before you know it, the rough edges of our busy-ness become smooth and calm. It is often said that a retreat is a “vacation with God.” A period of retreat is very necessary for remembering
Whose you are. For a time we are called away from our ordinary schedules and place of work and where we live. We allow God to allure us into the desert and speak to our hearts. The smoldering embers in our heart are once again stirred into flame. What if we learned to “retreat” some time every day? Perhaps that would make a difference as to why you get up each morning. What would happen if we took some time to rest in God’s presence throughout the day? I can only imagine that the quality of our work or our presence to others would be greatly enriched. As a former school principal/teacher I would often think of the three “’R’s”: Reading, (w)Riting, and (a)Rithmetic, as necessary for growth and development. Now I see many more “R’s” that nourish my soul. Retreat, Relax, Reflect, Recollect, Rest, Renew, Rediscover, Refresh, Receive…and Run…Run to the Lord and do not look back.
