SSMLT January
Council Meeting
Highlights
Message from Executive Director
SSMLT continues to work with Health Services Organization to
prepare for the new accreditation service. SK Polytechnic
MLT program is due for program accreditation in 2018. SSMLT
has submitted names to be representatives on the accredita-
tion technical committee as well as the Accreditation Deci-
sion Committee.
The Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professions Reg-
ulators (CAMLPR ), had a teleconference in March to discuss
many items related to regulation. This is an excellent forum to
ensure registration and entry to practice guidelines are similar
across Canada.
The SSMLT Regulatory Affairs committee will be meeting on
April 7 to finalize the bylaw change recommendations. The
overall intent of the bylaws will be largely unchanged. Sever-
al items required updating and format changes. The commit-
tee recommendations, will be sent to council for approval in
May.
Member consultation is tentatively scheduled for June-
August. Members will receive a package for review
and comment. The bylaws will be on the 2018 AGM
agenda for membership approval September 29, 2018.
As a reminder to our members; SSMLT utilizes electronic
communications with our members. The goal is to re-
duce printing and postage costs, and to achieve effi-
cient communication with our membership. To ensure
you receive all of the important communications from
SSMLT, update your member profile in the SSMLT data-
base with your current valid email address and ensure
SSMLT is a safe sender.
SSMLT annual report has been published and is availa-
ble of the SSMLT homepage ‘Bulletin Board”. The report
contains membership age demographics. SSMLT con-
tinues to inform and discuss with stakeholders this up-
coming workforce challenge.
Mark your calendars! SSMLT Fall Conference Septem-
ber 28 & 29 in Saskatoon.

Case Management and Return-To-Work
This course is one of the required courses for Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) -
Dalhousie University
Overview
The course entails the case of active disability management in the workplace
and the key players, legislation, predictors of return to work, diversity in the work-
place, communication among stakeholders, assessment of the worker and the
worksite. It reviews job site analysis and functional abilities evaluation, rehabilita-
tion and early intervention, return to work planning, transitional work options as
well as graduated return to work, professional conduct and labour-management
relations.
Disability in the Workplace
Disability is on the increase among the Canadian workforce which makes disabil-
ity management in Canada a rising need. Disability is the loss or reduction of
functional ability and activity consequent to impairment. The average direct dis-
ability costs for the Canadian workforce are approximately $1910.03 per full-time
worker. This makes it important to have a discipline or knowledge of how to tack-
le this issue or problem. The problem of disability makes it paramount for a struc-
tured program to be designed in order to deliver consistent recovery support,
reduce disability costs, reduce lost work time, and prevent the human costs asso-
ciated with disability.
Case Management
Case management and Return to Work focuses on the return to work process,
with emphasis on the components of Disability management that are critical for
a successful return to work outcomes. This course looks at the need for appraisal
case management strategies, vocational rehabilitation, and ethical and legal
implications of the return to work process.
Course Objectives
To critically appraise the case management and return to work processes, de-
sign of case management and return to work strategies that support stakehold-
ers in disability management process, critically analyze barriers and facilitators
that workers may face as they participate in return to work process and applying
the knowledge of legal and ethical principles.
