The beaches, monuments and crosses of Normandy will remain memories for a long time. Minnesota to visit relatives was the goal of Elaine and Bob Dube, but since Elaine is an artist, her summer adventure included visiting the Northrup King Building. This building houses galleries for 300 artists’ studios. She and her 95 year old artist friend, Bettye Olson, spent hours on this adventure perusing all the artwork. Elaine even discovered a new paper made of calcium citrate which she plans to use during the classes she teaches here in the village.

VacationADVADVENTURESENTURES

It’s been a long time since September or the Fall season meant going back to school for residents of SVE; nevertheless, we can still reminisce about our summer vacations. We can

share summer adventures just like we did way back when we hit the playground that fi rst week. Many of us went on exotic trips, explored places right home here in Arizona, visited

CHAPEL NOTESRichard Koerselman

The Chapel: 25 Plus Years of Worship and Service Each and every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. a group of people from

SVE gather for worship in the auditorium. Worship includes prayer concerns, special announcements, a sermon of about 20 minutes, an off ering for the 7 missions we support, and singing the old hymns. We also try to be honest, open and authentic as we consider the great truths from the Bible. And lastly, we bring in some humor each Sunday. We believe humor keeps our spirits young. For example, recently someone suggested we might consider some hymns with a geriatric twist:

Precious Lord, Take My Hand . . . And Help Me UpIt Is Well with My Soul . . . But My Knees HurtNobody Knows the Trouble I Have SeeingJust a Slower Walk with Thee Count Your Many Birthdays, Name Them One by OneGo Tell It on the Mountain . . . But Speak UpGive Me the Old Timers’ ReligionBlessed InsuranceGuide Me O Thou Great Jehovah...I’ve Forgotten Where I Parked

The Sunland Village East Chapel is celebrating 25 plus years of existence. We grew up with the Sunland Village East Community. Right from the beginning there was a bond.

Founding pastor Rev. Wyn Olsen was involved in many of the activities in the village. The Chapel congregation was and still is very much involved in contributing countless hours of volunteer work and providing leadership for the community. The Chapel and community communicate with trust and understanding. We believe the goodwill we’ve established will continue. Our Chapel will do everything we can to keep the relationship strong. May God’s blessings be with us all as we journey together.

Anniversary Celebrations on November 6 and 13. In the midst of our daily activities, it is good to stop

and celebrate where we are. We are planning anniversary activities on the Sundays, of Nov. 6, and Nov. 13, from 9 - 10 a.m. We will share stories about the past, celebrate with thanksgiving to God for the present moment and look ahead to an exciting future. Please join us. We are ready to welcome you.

SVE GOLF CONDO IIMimi Handoff

Yippee!! By the time this article is read some of you will be back “home” to Arizona and SVE Golf Condo II group. It will be soooo good to have you back.

Not much activity to report. I’m not usually at a loss for words but this article will be short. Rain directly over SVE has been rather infrequent at least when I’ve been here. Seems as though it rained around us and especially in the west Valley, so all those monsoon storms you’ve been hearing about as you are enjoying your time away from the Valley really didn’t happen in our area—yet. You know what Arizonians say, “It might rain on one side of the house but not on the other.”

Be sure your November calendar includes our Welcome Back party to be held Tuesday, November 15.

CONSERVATIVE CLUBPhyllis Galus

Happy Fall greetings from the Sunland Village East Conservative Club. Although Fall has brought cooler weather, if a drop from high triple digits to low triple digits can be considered cooler, the political climate is heating up. We have one more meeting before the state and national elections. State and f ederal candidates and their platforms will be part of our topic at our next meeting. Please attend and be part of the discussion.

Senator Farnsworth will be in attendance and speaking on several propositions that will have an impact on our state and community.

They are The Arizona Marijuana Initiative aka Proposition 205 and The Minimum Wage and Paid Time Off Initiative aka Proposition 206. We welcome your input on these and other relevant issues. Senator Farnsworth will also elaborate on his Az Constitionalist Club and how you can become a part of it.

The meeting is October 13, 2016 in the Mesa Verde Room located at 2615 S. Farnsworth Dr., Mesa.

The meeting starts at 10:00am. If you have any questions please call Phyllis Galus at 480 984 4939 or 714-323-1002.

DOGS ‘R US

L. PaulsenLady lives with Jim Mayberry. He adopted her from a

rescue in Scottsdale when she was about 2 years old, and she is believed to be part Airedale and German Shepherd mix. She had a chip which identifi ed her owners, but they never claimed her. As of August 28, Lady is now 5 years old. She is extremely friendly with everyone and loves to play at the dog park with other dogs. She also likes to run alongside the golf cart, which gives her the exercise she needs when she can’t get to the dog park. Lady is a great companion for Jim. Lady also has a good friend, Sharon Grin, who likes to take her on a visit to her house, and who takes care of her exercising when Jim is going to be gone temporarily. Lady is a well-loved, happy dog.

Is your pooch a swimmer? Can she /he do a doggie paddle that outpaces Michael Phelps by a length? Can she – or can any dog for that matter - actually swim under water as well as on top of it? Yes. A dog who loves water is capable of diving all the way to the bottom of a lake or pool, retrieving an object, and swimming up to the surface with ease.

Our club began our fall/winter season on September 17, and our next meeting will be held in the Mesa Verde Room, Saturday, October 15. We have coff ee time from 9 :30 to 10, then we hold an open discussion type meeting to plan our winter season. All dog lovers are welcome. Dogs join us when we have planned walks or socializing, usually every other month. Our dues are just $10 a year per household, and our goals are to learn more about caring for our pets, and to raise money and supplies to help dog shelters or veterinarian services who care for and give many dogs a second chance.

LIBRARY NEWSCharlotte Holm

J A Jance and Toni Hillerman are arguably the “go to” mystery authors for the state of Arizona. Other mystery writers have found Arizona to be the setting for their mystery novels. One such author whose books are on our shelves is Betty Webb. Like the other authors, she developed a character, Lena Jones, and wrote several books using this main character. Betty Webb has stated that each book has been inspired by a real case. The ‘Desert’ series features Scottsdale-based private eye Lena Jones, a former policewoman. The author says Lena was raised in foster homes and knows little about her own background, but learns more as the series progresses. Desert Noir, the fi rst in the series, had themes related to the development of Arizona such as the destruction of the environment and of cultural heritage by developers; issues of Native American rights and cultural displacement; corruption and greed in the art world; also the eff ects of tourism. Betty Webb’s other title which we have is Desert Shadows.

News of Note:: The fall volunteers library meeting will be Wednesday, November 2 at 9 A.M. in our library. Please join us. Newbies and regulars are invited. We would like to meet people who have not been part of our group and are seeking a wonderful volunteer experience.

Fitness ClubFall is upon us and the Fitness Club

is looking forward to the return of the winter residents and visitors. Our Club continues to off er instructional support for the residents who need familiarization for their physical well being. Some of the trainers will be returning by the time you receive the October issue of the Outlook.

Our guest fi tness contributor this month is Jan Allen, providing the following comments:

“My husband and I have lived in the village for 20 years. I started working out at the gym by the north pool. The equipment was limited and you usually had to wait until someone fi nished. I have always been exercise conscious so I really appreciated the new gym and the state of the art equipment.

I want to thank the residences of the village, the donors, the hard working volunteers and the board for giving us a gift we can never repay. The gym has added so much to this community and helped so many that required rehab, including myself. I owe my recovery to the availability of our fi tness center and desire to get better. Once you start working out, it becomes a way of life and you don’t want to give up. We have to do all we can to stay active and healthy so the gym is a true asset. Most of my friends mention they would have to pay to attend a work out facility as nice as ours.”

Thank each of you for your continued support. Our Fitness Center’s mission is to provide our residents with a facility that meets our every changing physical needs and one you can be proud to bring your SVE neighbors.

We are a friendly group and usually have coff ee and cookies on Saturday. Come on down, up or over as the case may be. You may play any or all days. The boards are north of the auditorium near the tennis courts. If you take a peek, you can see if things are starting.

The big news is we are getting new shades over our seats on the courts to help keep us cooler! Our fi rst get- together is a potluck and business meeting on Friday, November 11th.
