Commemorations marking the centenary of World War I were taken to another level at Gisborne, where a life-sized bronze statue of a soldier was unveiled at the town’s cemetery on Friday. About 300 people gathered for a service to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine. Gisborne Cemetery Trust spokesman Doug McArthur said the intricate statue was a fantastic addition to the area. “We’re very happy with it and the feedback has been all positive,” he said. “It’s just fantastic.” The 15-month project was completed with the support of Gisborne RSL and received funding from the federal government and other groups, including Gisborne Football Club, which raised money during this year’s Anzac Day clash. Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters has called for a full review of federal politicians’ work expenses in the wake of the latest entitlement scandals.
Ms Chesters, who slammed former speaker Bronwyn Bishop’s use of taxpayer funds to pay for a helicopter trip to a Liberal Party function, said most MPs were mindful of monies spent on o�cial duties, but there was still room to ensure the standard was clear. ‘‘We need to be accountable to those who have elected us.’’
Department of Finance �gures reveal Ms Chesters spent $244,536 on o�ce �t-outs between July 1 and December 31 last year.
A total of $67,887 was paid for o�ce administration, $15,183 for domestic airfares, $6792 for car expenses and almost $4000 for telecommunications.
McEwen MP Rob Mitchell spent $20,966 on o�ce �t-outs, $54,339 on o�ce administration, $12,479 on domestic airfares, $13,840 on car costs and $3959 on telecommunications.
Ms Chesters said many people didn’t realise that MPs spent 20 weeks a year in Canberra.
Mr Mitchell, like Ms Chesters, said he was extremely careful with taxpayers’ money.
‘‘It’s a unique job and there are things that you spend money on that you wouldn’t in other roles,’’ he said. ‘‘You can put the wrong clause number down for your �ight, and it ends up you claimed this and you’re not entitled to it … so you pay it back. But what we’ve seen with what Bishop did, that’s extreme.

A new wellbeing support service is expected to play a crucial role in building resilience among students at Sunbury College.
Leading Premier Daniel Andrews on a tour of the school on Friday, principal Stephen Smith said the surprise announcement of $70,000 in funding for a welfare program was welcome.
‘‘�e wellbeing and resilience of young people, not just in our school but across Sunbury, is a real issue,’’ Mr Smith said.
‘‘Issues of self-harm and so on are of concern to us. �ere’s also the number of students who just can’t cope with the demands of schooling at the VCE level.
‘‘Life is full of setbacks. We’ve got to teach our young people how to deal with that.’’
Mr Andrews chatted with students and enjoyed a co�ee made by trainee baristas as he toured the school to discuss plans for a $3 million science wing funded in this year’s state budget.
He said ‘‘building the education state’’ was more than a state government slogan.
‘‘Buildings are really important – you can’t expect to give our kids a �rst-rate education in second-rate classrooms,’’ he said.
Mr Smith said the school was waiting on departmental approval before engaging architects to design the new wing. He said any sod-turning was likely to be a year away.
Mr Andrews also visited Kyneton, where he and Macedon MP Mary-Anne �omas viewed plans for a complete $8 million rebuild of Kyneton Primary School next to Kyneton Secondary College.

Wellbeing win for college
One of Mount Macedon’s most treasured properties will be made available to community groups for the �rst time as part of a new open garden program.
�e home of a famous bluebell display along a driveway lined by Dutch elms, the heritage garden at Duneira will be opened up to a limited number of groups from this spring.
Despite no fees being charged, the program is expected to help groups rake in many thousands of dollars for charitable causes.
Duneira director Jacqueline Ogeil said the ‘‘exciting’’ program was spurred by a desire to

Dr Ogeil said community groups would keep 100 per cent of pro�ts collected during fundraisers held in the gardens.
‘‘We’ve got such a robust community that is always working to raise money for worthy causes,’’ Dr Ogeil said. ‘‘We thought, we’ve got these amazing manicured gardens … what better way to make use of them? It doesn’t matter if it’s a football club or the Red Cross. All we ask is that they are well organised and have public liability insurance.’’
Dr Ogeil said incorporated groups taking part in the program would have access to the property’s facilities and equipment, including chairs and toilets.
She expected there to be considerable interest, but fewer than 20 bookings were available.
‘‘We put the information out last Tuesday and on Wednesday morning we already had emails expressing interest,’’ she said.

A sharpshooting Sunbury basketballer is making history, and she hasn’t even reached her teens.
Jade Dunne (pictured) has been selected to represent Victoria at the School Sport Australia Paci�c Games in Adelaide this November.
�e 11-year-old is the �rst Kismet Primary School pupil ever named in a state basketball team.
Jade’s mother Michelle says it’s just the latest in a series of achievements for the basketball-crazy youngster, who hopes to one day play for Australia.
Last year Jade won a state academic and sporting medal. She’s since secured a high school place at Maribyrnong Sporting College
and continues to star as a guard/forward for Sunbury Jets’ under-14 representative side and Rupertswood Basketball Club’s 14A domestic team.
Jade, who looks up to Canberra Capitals forward/centre Abby Bishop, also trains four times a week, including twice on Sundays.
‘‘She’s absolutely obsessed with the game,’’ Michelle says. ‘‘We’ve got a ring at home and she’s out there every day shooting.’’

Rabbit populations along some of Sunbury and Bulla’s most vulnerable creeks and rivers have been reduced by up to 90 per cent as part of a major Hume council campaign.
Baiting and warren fumigation carried out at eight reserves in March and April was followed by more treatments in June, a�er which counts revealed a massive decline in rabbit numbers.
Sites targeted included �e Nook, �e Glade, and the Emu Valley and Spavin West Drainage reserves.
�e highest numbers were found at Emu Bottom Wetlands and Mount Holden Reserve, while the fewest were at Bulla cemetery.
A total of 183 rabbits were identi�ed across the eight areas before work began. About 190 warrens were treated as part of the campaign.
Council sustainability director Kelvin Walsh said the results were ‘‘fantastic’’.
He said teams would continue to monitor the sites and undertake more treatments if more rabbits are found.
‘‘Council is keen to minimise rabbit numbers because they damage our reserves and gardens,’’ Mr Walsh said. ‘‘Rabbits burrow into the banks of creeks and cause soil to erode a�er heavy rain.’’

A Sunbury group �ghting to keep metro and rural train services is urging commuters to sign a petition ahead of its meeting with Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.
Formed a�er controversial changes aimed at eventually stopping residents catching Bendigo-bound V/Line trains, Sunbury Train Association (STA) has also distributed more than 200 survey forms, giving people a chance to have their say.
�e group’s mission is to provide a balanced platform and ensure an accurate representation of views. Its petition calls for V/Line services to be reinstated until adequate changes are made to Metro timetables.
Spokeswoman Melissa Limb said the response had been incredible. She said the overwhelming majority of respondents wanted ongoing access to V/Line services, as promised by former Labor and Liberal governments before the Metro line was extended in 2013.
‘‘We’re really happy that people are standing up for their town and doing something about this,’’ Ms Limb said. ‘‘We’re not taking sides, we’re just doing what we can to ensure Sunbury gets the services it deserves.’’
�e survey asks commuters when and where they catch trains and provides an opportunity for them to rate Metro trains for frequency, safety, reliability and speed.
Participants can also share information about how the changes could impact on school pick-ups, work and education commitments, and access for people with disabilities.
�e group has already met with Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull and will present its �ndings to Ms Allan later this month.

It has also promised to investigate extra o�-peak services, but Ms Limb and others said the changes barely scratched the surface. �ere have also been
reports of disagreements between conductors and commuters.

Macedon Ranges residents have been warned not to believe social media-driven rumours as police continue to investigate the attempted abduction of a schoolgirl near Riddells Creek.
Inspector Ryan Irwin said police had become aware of exaggerated reports suggesting there had been a string of similar incidents in the area.

Detectives again visited Riddells Creek earlier this week as they continue to piece together what happened.
‘‘If there are people who have any information regarding that incident, we would encourage them to contact Crime Stoppers,’’ Inspector Irwin said.
Police quash abduction rumours
What was initially seen as a great problem for Sunbury’s Red Rock Christian College turned into a chance to make a lasting di�erence.
Wanting to re�ect its growth as a school, and working towards the planned introduction of secondary students in 2017, Red Rock last year decided to change its uniform.
In switching suppliers, the school was required to purchase the entire stock of custom-made items, including shirts, jackets, jumpers and bags.
Principal Karen McCoy says the school wasn’t sure what to expect when sta�, heading to South Africa to support a group called Hands at Work, suggested they take the uniforms with them.
‘‘�ey got it all over there only to discover these were actually the things that the group was looking for,’’ Ms McCoy says.
Pale blue polo shirts were perfect for boys wanting to play soccer.
‘‘Hands at Work has a number of care points, where children come from school each day and are given a meal,’’ Ms McCoy says.
‘‘�e boys love to play soccer, but they can’t get their school uniform dirty as they have no means of cleaning it.’’
Raincoats and jumpers have gone to mountainous areas near the border with Swaziland.
‘‘Something we saw as a problem for us turned out to be a great blessing, not only for them but also for us,’’ Ms McCoy says.
�e experience has been a great lesson for Red Rock pupils. ‘‘It proves to them we can all do something, and all of those little somethings can make a real di�erence.’’

Sunbury’s growing SES unit will be better able to respond to road crashes, storms and missing persons following the delivery of new equipment.
�rough this year’s equipment allocation – part of an ongoing sponsorship deal with insurer AAMI – volunteers have been armed with tools, including a blower, battery charger, �ares and a drill.
�e unit has also been able to bring a rescue support vehicle up to scratch and purchase marquees for staging areas.
Unit spokesman Jarrod Bell said the annual program was a great help, with units matching sponsor funding. ‘‘So we’re able to double it, which puts a whole range of equipment within reach and allows us to get on with the job.’’
AAMI has provided more than $5 million to Victorian SES units since 2002. �e latest batch of equipment comes at a good time for the Sunbury unit, which has taken on 10 new volunteers.
Mr Bell said new members were going through training and should be ready to attend call-outs in about a month.
�e trainees were selected a�er close to 30 people attended an information session six weeks ago. ‘‘It’s the maximum we are prepared to take on board at any one time to ensure they get the most out of the training,’’ Mr Bell said. Once the recruits graduate, Sunbury will have 50 trained operational volunteers.

Support pours in for SES

Having wrapped up a two-year stint on the touring circuit, the sisters who make up Macedon Ranges rock group Stone�eld are relishing the chance to survey life from the peaks of the Findlay family’s property in Darraweit Guim.
But while they are enjoying the perks of home, the quartet is by no means standing still, with a second album nearing the production stage and another tour, including a November concert at Hanging Rock, only months away.
Vocalist and drummer Amy Findlay says the band is in the process of whittling down about 25 songs for the new album.
Recently released single Golden Dream, produced by Kram of Spiderbait fame, provides a glimpse of a more mature sound.
‘‘It’s de�nitely a bit of a new direction for us,’’ Findlay says. ‘‘It’s more pyschedelic and dreamy … I’ve been able to �nd a lot of new ranges in my voice.’’
But Findlay says the new Stone�eld is ‘‘de�nitely still rocky’’ with the heavier tracks delivering even more of a kick than the group’s acclaimed 2013 debut.
She says the sisters didn’t need much time to consider an approach from Michael Gudinski’s Frontier Touring about being part of an all-Australian bill at Hanging Rock.
‘‘It’s such a special place,’’ Findlay says. ‘‘Obviously, it’s very close to home so to be able to perform there with the likes of Cold Chisel is a huge honour.’’
�e last time the girls performed at Hanging Rock was at a race day many years ago, well before they toured the world and performed on celebrated stages such as Glastonbury.

earning praise from artists around the globe, Findlay says they remain grateful for being able to perform for a living.
‘‘We just love what we do – that’s our favourite part of being in the band, for sure,” she said. ‘‘Like all sisters we are at each other a fair amount of the time, but to go to all these
places and have all these experiences together … it’s very cool.’’

A produce swap born out of a Sunbury resident’s plenty continues to grow.
Polly Woodward (pictured) started Harvest Sunbury almost 18 months ago, eager to share her homegrown fruit and vegetables and ensure nothing went to waste.
The monthly event proved so popular that its scope was expanded to include other items such as eggs, seeds, probiotics and seedlings.
Ms Woodward, who last year took part in Hume council’s Enviro Champions program, says that while fresh produce is attraction enough for some, for many the swap is about making connections.
“It’s as much about meeting other gardeners as it is about getting produce,” she says. “It’s great to watch people connecting. It’s real community.”
Between 25 and 30 people are attending the free swap at Sunbury Community Garden every month, up from an average of 15 earlier this year.
Ms Woodward said children were welcome to take part in the council-supported initiative, with a ‘‘little green thumbs’’ gardening club having been added to the event’s line-up to keep small hands busy.
Harvest Sunbury is held at the community garden, on the corner of Rolling Meadows Drive and Melbourne-Lance�eld Road, from 10am on the last Saturday of every month.

It was 11pm and I got a text message saying my home security system was screaming. Had I agreed to pay a security company to monitor the alarm, it would have sent a guy around to check and he would have got back to me. But my experience is that this can take anywhere up to six hours and I had �gured if the alarm called me and not them I’d react with more motivation. And it wouldn’t cost me a cent.
In this case there was a problem. I was in Singapore.
I managed to get a family member around there the next morning and was told it was a false alarm. All that stress for nothing.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some way you could remotely check if an alarm activation is just another wrong’un? Turns out there is. Just not quite yet.
Belkin unveiled the idea at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and says it will be on the market in Australia in the second half of this year. It’s an addition to the brand’s WeMo range – products aimed at creating a house controlled entirely by a phone. WeMo started with lighting, now there’s security.
It operates through your home Wi-Fi and you start with an alarm sensor. It looks like a smoke detector and is mounted near the little doover on the ceiling that creates all the noise when the alarm goes o�. Depending on your security guy, this is variously called a shrieker, a squawker, a siren or, as some more delicate security companies describe it, a sounder.

Here’s the clever bit. WeMo security includes sensors for your doors and windows, so if you’re advised the alarm has activated it’s simple to check if any doors or windows have been breached. If not, false alarm. Unless the guy has come in through the roof, in which case he’ll trip a motion detector or the door sensor when he leaves.
Here’s the interesting bit. �e system also includes key fobs. �ese track whoever has them, so you know where the kids are. Or – if you put one on its collar – where the dog gets to. But the best idea is that it will also tell you where you le� your keys. All you have to do is �nd your phone.
�e system includes pet-friendly motion detectors. Although prices have not been advised, the folk at Belkin predict you’ll be able to set up a house with three key fobs, a dozen door and window detectors and an alarm sensor for less than $1000.

Gisborne Cricket Club is gaining a reputation for producing some of the nation’s most promising young players.
Just 12 months ago, former Dragons’ cricketer Pat McKenna captained an Australian under-19 team tour of Sri Lanka. He has since been dra�ed to the AFL.
Now Tom Rogers and Matt Underwood have been named in the inaugural Australian Cricket Pathway rookie squad.
�e pair, along with 50 other young cricketers, were selected by state and territory talent scouts for the squad, which is overseen by Cricket Australia’s national talent manager and former Test skipper Greg Chappell.
�e teens have been graded into three levels: bronze, silver and gold.
Last season, Rogers played for the Dragons and Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association club Melton, while Underwood played for Premier cricket side Footscray Edgewater.
Both are le�-handed batsmen, and both have been named in the bronze category.
Dragons’ president Andrew Headberry said it was amazing to see past and present players doing well at a national level.
Other success stories include now- Riddell player Jack Baker, who bowled Victoria to victory at the national under-17 championships in 2012.
“It’s really amazing for the size of the town of Gisborne to have elite sports people like this,” Headberry said. “It’s just fantastic and gives everyone a li� to get players through to squads like this.
“A lot of people know these two guys. I look a�er Milo Into Cricket, and the parents are keen to hear about what the older cricketers are doing.
“To say 10 years ago, Pat McKenna was doing this thing and has gone on to captain the under-19 Australia team, is something they can aspire to.”
He said both Rogers and Underwood had shown talent from a young age.
“�e thing that stands out the most is the time and e�ort put in by the boys and their parents and people around them to get them to games and training.
“Both boys are the �rst to acknowledge how lucky they are,” Headberry said.
He said the club had made a massive focus of its junior program.
“�e last three to four years we’ve had a real focus on juniors.
“It’s part of our vision to have a strong club that includes a lot of junior participation.”
�e Dragons have one of the bigger junior programs in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association with 14 teams.
“It’s about combining having fun and giving the opportunity for the best to learn and develop their game,” Headberry said.
“�ese sorts of numbers mean we can spread the talent.
“In the under-16s, we had three teams, and were able to spread the really good players across the sides so they weren’t being stuck batting at number seven.
“We’ve made sure we have terri�c coaches – which has been quiet di�cult – and the best junior co-ordinator in Alicia Vernon.”

Sharks’ winning run comes to an endReality checks aren’t always a bad thing and that’s the case for Rupertswood, whose 10-game winning streak came to an end in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.
A�er playing the lower sides in recent weeks, the Sharks were looking forward to testing themselves against Riddell, the form team of the competition.
Disappointingly though, the Sharks were found wanting in many areas in the 10.15 (75) - 7.9 (51) loss.
Sharks coach Ben Jordan said the loss was what his side deserved.
“We were outplayed for most of the day and we got what we deserved really,” he said.
“We thought we’d go better than that . . . a bit disappointing really. �ey were stronger than us.
“�ey were cleaner with the footy and we were reactivate all day. We didn’t look like scoring much and didn’t look dangerous when we had the ball in hand.”
Jordan said the loss had le� his side with plenty to work on in the �nal two rounds of the season, including ball movement.
“We were slow to move the ball,” he said.“We had some chances to attack and counter-
attack early on and seemed a bit tentative.“We didn’t link up and carry the ball like we
would have liked to, which makes us easy to defend against.
“We never really gave ourselves a chance.”Jordan said it was good to play a couple of the
top sides in the run home, with an eye on �nals.“It’s a good preparation from our point of
view,” he said.
“We’re aware that some of our wins have been against sides that aren’t travelling too well. I’ve been happy with how the boys have built up some momentum a�er a slow start to the season.
“It’s not a bad thing to play good sides like Riddell and Romsey now. If we’re to win �nals we have to win these sorts of games.”
�e loss sees the Sharks slip from top to fourth ahead of a clash with new leader Romsey.
“We had a win in the wet against Romsey last time,” Jordan said.
“It’s a crucial one for us; we need to respond and we have to respond.
“It’s such an even competition we could �nish anywhere from �rst to fourth.”

Riddell might not see itself as premiership favourite, but it’s hard for others in the Riddell District Football League to see it otherwise.
�e Bombers have won their past nine consecutive games – the longest winning streak in the league.
Breaking it down even further, in the past seven weeks the Bombers have defeated the six other sides in the top seven.
On Saturday, the last of those top six, ladder leader Rupertswood went down 10.15 (75) -7.9 (51).
As they’ve o�en achieved this season, the Bombers were solid early in the game, making the most of every opportunity before taking control in the last quarter.
Bombers’ coach Troy Scoble said a�erwards it had been “a good game of footy”.
“Rupertswood is a really good side and they run hard,” Scoble said.

“�ey brought a lot of pressure in the second half and we matched that.
“We were always con�dent we could do that … as we are really potent up forward.”
Jeremy Krojs kicked two goals for the Bombers as the players shared the scoring around, a feature of their season.
“We took our chances when we had momentum,” Scoble said.
“As a footy club, we’ve played in some big games in the past 10 years, so we know that when you play top sides that’s what it comes down to.
“Jarryd Allen is back on the park and has been really good for us, too. He should have kicked a couple today.”
A�er originally just wanting to make the �nals, Scoble says the Bombers want to feature strongly in those �nal weeks.
�e side has the bye this week, before playing Sunbury Kangaroos in the �nal round.
“I think I have said before, we had a draw which would show us exactly where we are as a club,” Scoble said.
“�e form of the players has been outstanding.
“We are going to play �nals.”As for being premiership favourites?“I look at the top seven as even,” Scoble said.
“�e �rst week of �nals could be a toss of the coin in all three matches.”
�e �ght for sixth spot on the ladder couldn’t get much closer with only 0.53 per cent separating Sunbury Kangaroos and Broadford.
�e Kangaroos lost nearly 10 per cent a�er their 20.10 (130) - 13.13 (91) loss to Romsey but remain in sixth spot with Broadford right on their tail.

Sunbury’s Curtis Cox was in the thick of the action when a Victorian Kookaburras under-16 team surprised everyone – including the players themselves – at a baseball tournament in the US.
Cox pitched for the whole game when the Kookaburras won their �rst-ever match in the ‘Ripken Experience’ at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – which has junior players competing, watching major league games and seeing the sights.
�e Kookaburras played six games in the US, including the win and a tie.
“We didn’t think we would win a game while we were over there,” the 15-year-old Salesian College student said,
“It’s amazing; we didn’t think we would beat the Americans at their own game.”
In the winning game, Cox threw seven innings and 74 pitches.
He also pitched and hit in another game.Cox’s rise to playing for Victoria has been a
quick one, having taken up the sport two years ago.
“I was hoping to get selected [for the Kookaburras] but wasn’t sure that I would be,” he said. “I was really happy and excited.”
He’s hoping to go to college in the US a�er �nishing school to further his baseball career.
In the meantime, he will continue to play with Greensborough in the winter season and Preston in the summer.
“I just want to keep getting better,” he said. “Hopefully, someone saw me when I was playing in America. I’m going to keep trying out for more [state and national] teams and hopefully get selected.”

Broadford came out on top in the Dalhousie District Bowl at Romsey Golf Club on Sunday.
With the best three scores from each team counting, Broadford (2) won the four-player stableford competition from Broadford (1).
�e event was played over Romsey’s “old course” with two rounds of 12 holes.
Light overnight rain and a heavy dew meant the fairways were very so� and balls picked up mud.
�e Broadford contingent of Graham Hogg (handicap 7) on 26 points, Chris Hanson (5) on 24 and Craig �orpe (9) on 28 led the way in the morning half of the competition.
In the a�ernoon, Trentham’s Alan Hopkins (11) and Broadford’s Aaron Frost (6) had the best rounds with scores of 24.

�e Sunbury Jets have fallen agonisingly short of winning the Big V youth women’s division 2 championship.
Not much separated the Jets and Camberwell all season … and it was the same in Sunday’s grand �nal.
�e Dragons outscored the Jets in the �rst three quarters, but the Jets didn’t give up without a �ght.
�e margin was as little as two points in the last quarter as both teams hit trouble with fouls.
�e lead set by the Dragons in the opening three quarters proved enough to secure their 61-55 win.
For Jets coach Andrew Seidel, it was a frustrating end to what has been the side’s best season to date.
He said it was pleasing to see the Jets �ght it out to the end, outscoring the Dragons 17-14 in the �nal quarter.
“We gave it everything and just fell short,” Seidel said.
“�e girl who won the most valuable player award, [Dragons’] Michelle West, was the di�erence.
“In the �rst half, she hit a number of shots to set them up.”
�e Jets were le� to rue poor free-throw shooting.
Both teams struggled from the foul line, with the Dragons making 52 per cent of free-throw shots, while the Jets made 18 of their 35 shots at 51.4 per cent.
“It’s something the girls did mention a�er the game.
“We’re disappointed and frustrated at some of those shots not falling.
“Our shooting was up and down during the season. In general, we shot pretty well in most games. �e games where we shot poorly were the high-intensity ones that we lost.”
Despite not taking home the silver- wear, the season was a success for the Jets.
“We’ve had the program the past �ve years and the �rst couple of years the youth girls were only winning one game a season.
“�is year, we lost only four games, three against Camberwell and one against Southern Peninsula, who �nished third on the ladder.
“�ey gave their all the whole year.”It was an across-the-board
performance, with Seidel saying every player who stepped onto the court had played their role. Alex Darby topscored with 16 points, while Naomi Stevens had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Gisborne has one eye on next year, its �nals hopes all but gone in this year’s Bendigo Football League.
While the Bulldogs are only one game outside the top �ve, they’ve played one more game than ��h-placed Kyneton.
And with only two home-and-away games le�, including one this weekend against table-topping Strath�eldsaye, their hopes look slim.
�e Bulldogs were well beaten at the weekend, 12.20 (92) -6.9 (45) against second-placed Sandhurst at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Despite the margin of defeat, Bulldogs coach Rod Sharp said he felt his side was always in the game but just lacked the talent to match
Sandhurst. “We never felt like we were out of it, but we were playing a top-two side and it showed,” Sharp said.
“With the ability of our team I couldn’t have asked for much more than they gave. [Sandhurst] had a little more talent.”
Sharp said while the results weren’t necessarily there, the development of some of the young guys was pleasing.
“�ey have improved all year and are getting better at taking their footy more seriously and being a little more competitive,” he said.
“Someone like Ollie Clough, and how he reacts when he makes a mistake, has changed.
“He kicked out from defence and they got a goal from it. He used to drop his head, but on Saturday he was our best player in the 20
minutes a�er that mistake. Josh and Hamish Govan are another couple who keep improving. �ey’re the future leaders of this club.”
Sharp concedes his side was in for a challenge against Strath�eldsaye in two weeks.
“�ey’re in a league of their own,” he said. “But it’s at home and will be a good learning experience for our boys.”

is a state of a�airs Sharp isn’t used to as a coach and player. “It’s frustrating and disappointing,” he said, adding that the club may need to look at the direction it was taking.
He was due to meet club o�cials on Sunday a�ernoon to discuss whether he would be coaching next season.
A decision is believed to be close.“�e young players need to have some players
of the next level to help them develop,” Sharp said.
“We’ve been a club that hasn’t spent a lot of money on players. In my view, it’s really important to look at getting a couple of at least VFL standard.
“We need to make sure we get the balance right, get in the right people for the club and not ruin the culture.”

Bombers, Sharks turn it on, �nals-styleFinals came three weeks early in the Riddell District Netball League with ladder leaders Riddell and Rupertswood delivering a thriller on Saturday.
�e two sides have clearly been the best teams all year, but on Saturday it was the Bombers who came out on top, 54-51.
No more than �ve goals separated the teams all game as both forced turnovers and challenged accuracy under the ring.
Scores were level at quarter-time before the Bombers settled in the second quarter to lead 30-25 at the main break.
�e Sharks responded to level the scores with 40 seconds remaining in the third term. But the Bombers got the last two goals of the quarter to lead by two goals going into the �nal break.
In the last quarter, the teams went goal for goal, both shooting at a high percentage.
�e Bombers nailed the clincher in the dying seconds.
Both sides said the game was exactly the sort of thing they were expecting come �nals time.
Bombers captain-coach Lauren Close said it was a fantastic game.
“We got pushed and they kept coming and got in front, then we pushed again,” Close said. “It was going down to the �nal siren.”
She said it was her players’ composure that got them over the line.
“We got a bit rattled in the �rst and second quarters.
“We got back to what we knew … we were up and about and around each other, which we haven’t had the last couple of games.”
In a surprising move, star shooter Mikaela Vaughan played goal attack.
“�ey would have studied our game and expected her back as goal shooter,” Close said.
“I have three shooters who can go through there at the moment.”
Hearts were in mouths in the third quarter when Close, who is returning from a knee injury, went down hurt.
“I copped it in the ribs,” she said. “�e knee is great, but everything else is starting to hurt a�er games.”
Sharks netball manager John Lawson said it was a true test of where the team was at.
“�is time we had our full team on the court,” he said. “We know where we are in the lead-up to �nals.
“�e shooters shot at more than 75 per cent, which is what we need to do. We know we have to improve and in what areas.”
He said there had been no disruption through Katie Clarke stepping in to the coaching role while coach Di McCormack is away.
“Katie is a great coach in her own right and brings a di�erent dimension to the side,” he said.

Nissan Juke arguably has the boldest shape in its class and of any vehicle currently on sale in Australia.
It’s become even more radical thanks to a major makeover, front and rear.
Juke is all about funky style.�e front and rear wheel arches bulge up and
out to give it a muscular stance. �e disguised rear door handles make it look as though it’s a coupe-like three-door – but the handles are there and provide the convenience of four-door entry that most motorists demand these days.
What appear to be large headlights are actually foglights, while the headlights sit high on the bonnet. �e turn signal repeaters previously sat on the top of the headlights. Some drivers found this distracting, particularly at night, so Nissan has moved them to a more conventional position on the door mirrors.
In its Series 2 iteration, the Juke’s forward area is based on the Nissan V-Motion front, with strong curves and a big lower area setting o� a slimmer upper section.
New colours have been added, including Bumblebee Yellow, Magnetic Red and Ink Blue – which makes a pleasant change from endless greys and silvers.
Inside, Juke’s styling isn’t quite as radical as is the body. But the big instruments, large centre console and gear lever housing continue the circular theme.
�ere are changes to the engine lineup. A 1.2-litre turbo-petrol used in the entry level 2WD Juke ST performed well with the six-speed
gearbox. �e previous 1.6-litre non-turbo powerplant is still o�ered in the 2WD Juke ST and has had some upgrades.
�e topline Juke Ti-S has a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine. Shared with the Pulsar SSS, it provides handy grunt all the way from 1600 to 5200 rpm – most people will be driving in this range almost all the time. We loved it.

though taller rear seat occupants could �nd their heads close to the roof.
�ere’s good front headroom and the driver’s seat is comfortable and supportive.
All Juke models get front, side and curtain airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; ISOFIX child seat anchorages; and a reversing camera.
Nissan Juke joins stylish small SUVs such as Ford Kuga, Holden Trax and Renault Captur in a hard-fought market segment.
All these compact SUVs have plenty of style, but the Juke dares to be really di�erent and many buyers, especially younger ones, love them. �e oldies are �nding the accessibility of the high-set seats and large boot, at least in the Juke 2WD, make it kinder on ageing bones.

Automatic sports cars were always an oxymoron. But things have changed a lot, with smoother transmissions, more gears and the semi-manual shi�ing through the stick or paddles.
Still, I’m not usually a fan of clutch-less manual driving. You don’t get the same excitement from standing start, nor do you feel the revs like you do in a full manual, meaning you have to constantly refer to the tacho instead of the road, which isn’t a great idea on mountain roads.
�e Toyota 86 GTS automatic is one exception. I’ve driven the manual version and absolutely loved it and, a�er initial misgivings, I had a ball in this, too.
Its throaty sound and the proximity of your derriere to the ground means you get a great feel of what the car is doing, which translates to more control when you �ick it to manual mode.
Using the steering wheel paddles is heaps of fun and makes this little car feel like a go-kart without the bone-shattering ride and nauseating two-stroke fumes.
Driving it in automatic requires careful footwork on the accelerator if you want the transmission to keep up – which almost needs as much skill as using a clutch.
As with the Toyota 86 GTS manual, a smile appeared on my face every time I approached a bend, with the sensation of speed ampli�ed, even at lowish speeds, by being so low to the ground.
As it did with the Celica in the 1980s, Toyota has cracked it for an a�ordable sports car that looks great and drives even better.
With manual licences going the way of our car industry, this automatic version, priced at $42,925 drive away (about $2500 more than the manual) spreads the love even further.
Inside, the ‘cockpit’ is kept relatively basic to keep the emphasis on driving.
Performance information is con�ned to
the gauge cluster, making it easy to read at a glance. I like how the speed is also displayed as a digital reading in the rev counter.
It isn’t free of creature comforts. It has duel zone air-conditioning controls and a small touch screen with the usual Bluetooth phone/MP3 player connectivity, navigation and voice control. �e GTS model also has a reverse camera, a handy option in a car this low, although the rear vision is surprisingly good.
One thing I’d like to have seen was audio controls on the steering wheel.
�e front seats in this thing are fantastic. �ey support your body through the g-forces caused by the 86’s curve-hugging drive without restricting your arms.
�e two-litre four-cylinder engine is sluggish when overtaking around 100 km/h in sixth, but if you put it into ��h it takes o� like a rocket.
