D ear Community of St. Augustine:
This weekend, St. Matthew’s Gospel (14, 22-33), shows us the scene of Jesus and Peter walking on
water. St. Matthew tells us that, after the multiplication of the bread and the fish, Jesus goes up the mountain to pray while the disciples proceed to the opposite shore. Navigation becomes difficult for the disciples due to the wind and the waves shaking their boat, causing not to recognize Jesus walking on the water toward them, and becoming terrorized.
Jesus had performed a great miracle in front of their eyes, to feed the crowd; how could they doubt that He would be able to walk on water? How could Peter ask for a sign? – “Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water” (Mt 14:28) We can imagine Jesus telling Peter: Trust me, let me guide you, do not be afraid, come.
Brothers and sisters, when difficult situations shake our lives, as in the case of the disciples, we could panic and fail to recognize the Lord. Furthermore, even when the Lord grants us what we ask Him, it could be that we will doubt and sink under the heaviness of life’s problems and fail to set our eyes on the Lord and trust Him. Have we felt like that during these months of confronting COVID 19? The Lord would also say to us, “O you of Little faith, why did you doubt?”
I want to express my appreciation to those who participated in the Virtual Prayer Vigil for an end of the pandemic; let us keep praying and asking the Lord to save us.
May He grant us good health and peace.
Q uerida Comunidad de San Agustín: Este fin de semana el evangelio de San Mateo (14, 22-
33) nos presenta la escena de Jesús y Pedro caminando sobre el agua. San Mateo nos cuenta que después de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces, Jesús sube al monte para orar mientras los discípulos se embarcan hacia la otra orilla. La navegación se le hizo difícil a los discípulos, por el viento contrario y las olas sacudiendo la barca hacen que no reconozcan a Jesús que se acerca a ellos caminando sobre el agua, y se llenan de terror. Jesús había realizado delante de sus discípulos un gran milagro, alimentar a la multitud ¿Cómo es posible que ahora duden de que Jesús pueda caminar sobre el agua? ¿Cómo es posible que Pedro pida una señal? “Señor, si eres Tú, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua”. Podemos imaginar a Jesús diciéndole a Pedro: confía en mí, déjate guiar, no temas, ven. Hermanos, cuando las situaciones difíciles sacuden nuestra vida, al igual que los discípulos, podemos no reconocer al Señor, podemos llenarnos de temor. Incluso cuando el Señor nos concede lo que le pedimos (caminar sobre el agua), dudamos y nos hundimos cuando sentimos la fuerza de los problemas en la vida y no ponemos nuestra mirada y nuestra total confianza en el Señor. ¿Nos hemos sentido de esta manera durante estos meses que hemos enfrentado la pandemia del COVID 19? El Señor nos diría también a nosotros: “Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?” Agradezco a todos los que participaron en la Vigilia de Oración Virtual de oración por el fin de la pandemia. Continuemos orando y pidiéndole al Señor que nos salve. Que Dios nos conceda salud y paz.
